Andreas is an artist. Sadly, his talent is rare these days. But he is a god send!…read more One of the unique original features of our 1931 Spanish Bungalow in the Oakland hills is the bathroom mirror. Imagine the sadness that filled this house when I accidentally broke the mirror. I searched for vintage or antique glass artists and contacted three I found in Oakland. Andreas got back to me and simply said, "...I can reproduce your mirror." The other two artists said, there is a only one person around who can do this. Lehmann Glass Studio. Andreas came by the house to pick up the mirror and the process went smoothly. It was fun to go to his studio to see the glass work before he took it to Santa Cruz to be "mirrored". I saw an elaborate piece he was working on for someone in New York! See for yourself.

The table was over 10 years old and we were not sure where it was originally bought or what brand it was. We went to a local glass shop in San Leandro, (Barnes Glass & Co.) and they informed us that due to the designs cut into the glass it was considered artisan and that we needed to find a specialist. They contacted someone who knew of an artisan that replicated glass, Mr. Andres Lehmann of Lehmann Glass. I looked at his website and was in awe of his work. I called him to no avail so i decided to email him instead with my phone number enclosed as well as a picture of a portion of the broken glass. Less than an hour later he calls me back after seeing the picture and says that he can easily duplicate it. He asked whether i could bring in the table so that he could take an exact measurement but instead he suggested that he came over to measure it himself. I was so elated because the table is over 4 ft long and 2 ft high, not something that would easily fit into my sedan. The next day he came over and inspected the table. He also took the leftover glass that we kept that was lying around outisde near the trash which he said he would use as a sort of template. He asked for 50% down payment and the rest when he dropped off the finished glass piece a week later. He did an AMAZING job recreating it and it looks better, if I do say so myself, than the original. Definitely a life saver! Evidentally, he is a specialist and not some regular glass guy because of the detail he can produce in a piece of glass so of course it expected it to be a little pricier. Just looking at his website: www.LehmannGlass.com I knew he could handle it. Highly recommend him. Great service all around! NOTE: if you don't reach him via phone he might be on the other line which will produce the busy tone. So try calling him again. or email him. :)

They extracted the glass from the frame and dismantled the window frame by frame until they got to the broken pane of glass. The repaired section and all the intricate metal framing and solder looked aged perfectly to the remainder of the window. They are artists and really nice people.

The first stained glass studio I talked to gave me a description of the extensive work he'd need to do, a cost estimate and an ETA on how long it would take, and they all seemed crazy. So we had doubts we'd be able to get the issue fixed. Then I contacted Helios and had a completely different result. They were so friendly and so taken with our old lamp. They immediately knew what to do to mend and strengthen the glass shade, having fixed similar issues with many vintage lamps. The price quoted was less than a quarter of the first cost estimate we got, and the time estimate was only a week or two. Their proposed solution was so sensible we knew we were in good hands. That impression was only strengthened by Connie's gorgeous personal stained glass art on display in their workshop. With those examples of the talent in play, I knew the result would look great. And it looked even better than expected. When we picked up our fixed lampshade right on schedule, the repairs were invisible and the previously weakened structure was now rock solid. The whole process was so pleasant, the results were impeccable and now our beloved old lamp is assembled and shining again for the first time in decades. I'd trust these folks with any stained glass project you brought to them.

I happen to know the owner, Armelle, who is a gregarious and accommodating person and an amazing artist, with many years of professional experience in stained glass restoration. Armelle has worked on various prestigious projects, incl. SF City Hall, Grace Cathedral, St Thomas Cathedral in NYC and others as a team member and project manager at larger glass studios. At her own "atelier" in West Oakland she focuses on glass design and original art ranging from conceptual pieces to commission art, to functional glass objects (plates, bowls, platters, coasters, etc.). The prices are very reasonable, considering that each piece is unique and very well crafted. If you're looking for something quite a few notches above the generic mass-produced stuff from Ikea or Crate & Barrel, this is one place you should definitely check out. Highly recommended!

What an amazing experience a visit to this studio is!!! Armelle was so friendly and invited me into her studio, taking the time to graciously show all the amazing projects her studio is working on. The work they perform in restoration of stain glass was absolutely breathtaking and inspiring. The attention to detail was incredible and the notes they keep on techniques and experiments were jaw dropping. I have a new appreciation of restoration work....Next, she revealed a project for a local restaurant which had elements of history and modernity. The fused work was subtle yet detailed....Finally, she revealed her personal work and each series was stunning and different from the next. Provocative, raw, yet sensitive. The scope of her work and the attention to detail was inspiring. I was truly honored that she shared her time and blown away when she very generously shared her kilning schedule and offered many suggestions to help me get started after finding out about my interest in fusing(thank you SO much!). This random visit was a high point in my vacation and if you like glass, I very highly recommend you give Armelle a call and visit! She does have shows and offers her personal work for sale. I bought a gorgeous one of a kind hand painted tray from her latest series and I return to LA a very happy inspired lady :-D

But I have had such a comically bad experience with this place that I feel I should warn others. In January I found a Spring Session class I wanted to register for that was set to begin 3/15. It was in their catalog as a "New Class". However, when I went to their registration portal the class was not listed. The first time I called them, the receptionist said he didn't have access to the registration system and to call back later. The second time I called, they told me that they had added the class and I could register online--but I soon discovered it still wasn't listed. The third time I called they said they added the class but that I wouldn't be able to register until March 10th (which is when registration opens for LATE spring session, whereas this class was set to begin on March 15th, the early spring session). Huh? Registration is open for only five days before the class begins? I asked them to check again, and they called be back later that day and said the early spring session had been added. ...Nope, it definitely was still not in the system. Exasperated by their incompetence, I finally tracked down an email address for the instructor and emailed her directly. I didn't hear back, but soon after that the class showed up and I could finally register. So I did, and made an online payment. Two weeks later, I received an email with a receipt for a refund, with no explanation I assumed this meant the class had been cancelled, but no one called or emailed me to tell me that, and the refund never posted to my bank account. I had also never received any information about the class (materials list, curriculum, etc.) so I still currently have no idea what's happening. When I try to call them, their extension is "unavailable", as is the "operator" AND the "backup operator" that the system auto-routed me to. I really want this place to improve because they're one of the few organizations offering adult art classes in Oakland. But as is, it seems to be a bit of a mess.

It's a rare opportunity for working folks who love art (but never get to do it) to be artistic and creative. We also hoped it would be an opportunity to meet people, relax, unwind, drink some wine, and hang out... but we discovered one fine weekday eve that it was lots of Draw but very little Drink. There are some serious art students in Berkeley! The art instructor was knowledgeable, talented and inspiring, and brought some great materials for us to use - handmade paper, high-quality ink, brushes. We did have to supply some of our own stuff, like scratch paper, pencils, erasers. She taught us new techniques and was very hands-on. A few completed projects even looked frame-worthy. Kala offers great programs if you want to do art in the evening. However, if you actually want to hang out with friends, catch up, and Drink with your Draw, you may want to go to a bar. Just sayin'...!
