The Alaska Club - Terrible Customer Service and Dishonest Practices…read more My experience with The Alaska Club has been nothing short of awful. Their customer service is unprofessional, relentless, and completely dismissive of member requests. After signing up, I was repeatedly called by their sales rep--even after telling them multiple times to stop contacting me. It got so bad that I eventually had to block their number. When I joined, I signed a contract stating I would pay $76 for my first month and had a two‑week trial period before committing to a year‑long membership. The agreement clearly stated that if I canceled within those two weeks, I would receive my $76 back. I canceled well within that window. What followed was four months of emails and phone calls just trying to get the refund I was promised. I finally received the $76, only to check my account later and see that they had taken it back. After everything, they still pulled the money from my account. This business operates with misleading practices and zero accountability. The constant calling, the runaround, and the refund fiasco make it clear that they do not value their members at all. Do not join. And if you're already a member, leave now.

I am very out of shape, throw in Covid living for the last two years and things are just tough!…read morePrior to Covid we were very active at the Alaska club, buuuut I was always disappointed by the lack of skill/ knowledge the instructors had some were hands down amazing but many times it seemed like they were just going through the motions. The pricing was also just too much. For probably six months I've been searching for the right fit gym. I tried several in town and nothing really seemed to work, either I felt way out of place or uncomfortable or they had the equipment but no instruction... I heard about PWR house through friends and coworkers, initially I wasn't sure about it because everyone I know who goes to this gym is legit fit. I just didn't want to be another experience where I went to class and all the in shape people look at me like wth is she doing here and snob me. Anyhow about three weeks ago I tried my first class and was totally shocked, everyone was so kind and supportive and I didn't feel out of place at all. So I decided to try a few other types of classes as a "drop in" $15 per drop in is super reasonable too other drop ins I've done at other gyms were $20-35! I was in disbelief after my third class every single class I felt welcome and like I was getting the best work out ever and that the instructors knew their stuff. Now I'm three weeks in and I've gone all in. I joined one of their small personal training groups and sign up for daily classes with my monthly pass- which I cannot stress enough what a crazy deal the monthly passes are - no one in town offers so much for so little as cheesy as that sounds. Everyone is so encouraging and positive! I'm definitely a Debbie downer but even my bitter a$$ feels happy after every single work out I'm getting stronger little by little and I've already noticed just after three weeks my flexibility has at least doubled. I should also say this is definitely a gym for people who might have peaked in their work outs every classes has modifications available to increase or decrease or stay in the middle. If you're just traveling through the drop in classes would be perfect! Or if you're in town for a bit longer they offer a series of classes for a rate and they also have the option of monthly passes to go to as many classes as you want. The vibe inside it unmatched in town and I'm super happy I gave it a try!

I'm writing this mostly in response to Candriann's post. It sounds like she did a drop-in, and…read morehadn't been to a box prior (forgive me if I'm wrong). That is a mistake. Yes, you can't learn the moves in 1.5 hours. I've been going for a year and a half and I'm still not perfect with a lot of the moves. There is now a beginner's on-ramp course that lasts a few weeks, but the reason there wasn't one before is because there used to be so few people that attended classes, and the owners and instructors could work one-on-one with new people. In the past few months there has been a huge influx of new people, resulting in less one-on-one attention. The owners and other instructors are great; they know what they're doing, and will help without you asking. They want you to get better. Also, they are very approachable and reasonable, so I am surprised about the pricing problem that Candriann had. They don't try and "hide" anything and they aren't out to get people. Lastly, the ego. I have no idea what she is referring to. Maybe it's like that in some boxes, but definitely not here. When I started, I was terrified. I had never done anything more than running and playing soccer in high school. So, my weightlifting knowledge and experience was zero. I was nervous about lifting in front of others that knew what they were doing, and even more because I could barely lift the bar! But, the instructors and owners were (and still are) extremely patience, nice, helpful, AND motivational! Everyone is! People do not want to be disturbed when in the middle of a lift or a workout, but that doesn't mean they have a large ego or think they are superior to anyone else. If you're thinking about trying CrossFit Fairbanks, don't let Candriann's review discourage you; come decide for yourself. I absolutely love it, and have made incredible progress fitness-wise.

I'm lucky enough to get to spend the summer here in Fairbanks, so the first thing I did was to run out and get my membership renewed!
