I was initially very pleased with owner, Bob's, quick response time, especially given the fact that I was under a time crunch involving an insurance claim. Based on detailed information I provided over the phone on a Saturday, he gave me a tentative estimate of $850-1000 to complete the finish work after I had hung the drywall and said he could be out 3 days later while I felt was more than reasonable.
As soon as he arrived with a total crew of 3 workers, he began making claims that I had not told him there were closets in the bedrooms and some walls that needed more than the bottom 2 feet finished. I confidently told him zi had but he added an extra $200 bringing the job to $1200. He stated that the work would be done in one day because they were using quick setting durabond. Again, I felt this was reasonable so I agreed to the higher price and stated, "sounds good, I just need these walls ready to go for primer and paint."
This is where the deceit and dishonesty started. He sneakily said, "yup you'll just have to do a little light sanding a foot above and below the seam before you prime." I caught it and asked why I'd have to be doing any sanding given that I was paying him for the finish job. He then claimed that he had made this clear to me on the phone when we discussed the estimate and that I would have to pay another $400 to come out the next day to sand the job. I remained calm and assertive while he said he had the phone conversation recorded with a special app (which by the way he never legally disclosed to me before our phone conversation). I entertained his shady tactics and welcomed the opportunity to listen to this alleged recording. He searched for 20 mins in his phone and was never able to produce said recording--though I did see a number of legit recordings in the long list he scrolled. When he couldnt find it, he attempted to negotiate the initially quoted $400 for sanding to $200. Through insistent questioning and probing on my part, he finally admitted he never intended to do ANY sanding after the 3 coats of mud, stating, "I'm that good. I use water to flatten each coat before adding another." Even after I challenged him and pointed out that the industry standard included sanding and that omitting the fact that he wouldn't be sanding at all is deceitful and sketchy business, he insisted he was doing nothing concerning. Ultimately, I had to be very firm and matter of fact about telling him I'd be paying him the $1200 for the complete job which included sanding or he could pack his materials and crew and move it along.
the next day, he sent one guy to sand for 3.5 hours before he came over with another guy for 2.5 hours to help finish the job. When I directly addressed the fact that his professional crew of 3 men had been there all day to complete the sanding that he had told me would be "a little light sanding," he reverted back to the ridiculous recording to somehow attempt to justify his crookish behavior and blamed one of the guys he had sent for "milking it" as to why the sanding had taken soong. If I had not been assertive and strong with him, I'd have been taken advantage of in the way I know many others had to have been already.
I'd advise staying as far away as possible from this unprofessional and dishonest business. He clearly has a scheme to corner people into believing they had not understood the terms of the estimate and erroneously assumed sanding would be included then either charges them more or leaves the customer with hours/days worth of sanding after he has kindly left you with 3 layers of mud on the seams. In hindsight, I should have shut down the job and dismissed the crew as soon as he began his shenanigans. Lesson learned. read more
