Simply Strong has been the simply perfect choice for my personal training. As an older adult who…read morehas had 2 back surgeries and a shoulder surgery I had concerns about working with a trainer who understands the specific physical concerns related to my status and could tailor a program for those specific needs. That's exactly what I found at Simply Strong. This isn't a big gym with areas for cardio, cross training, etc. It's a small, family owned and run facility specifically focusing on strength training. On my first visit they reviewed my health history and we discussed my specific needs and restrictions. I started out with fairly easy workouts on 5 machines with one on one coaching. As I became comfortable with the the technique the trainers began slowly increasing the weight to get me to muscle fatigue on each muscle group. It's amazing how a workout in less than 20 minutes can leave you with limp noodle muscles in multiple areas of the body, but that's exactly the goal. In the 3 months I've been working out twice weekly I've seen the weight I can handle steadily increase. I have muscle definition in my arms and legs that I didn't have before, and I can feel that I'm stronger in daily activities like hiking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, etc. Every time I work out everyone calls me by name. They inquire before every workout about my status that day, and if necessary we modify what I'm doing that day. At the end of the workout we review how it went. I think this is a great place for anyone wanting personalized strength training, but particularly if you are an older adult or someone with specific health concerns this is the place to go for professional trainers who understand how to tailor a workout to your specific needs.

I am a 57-year-old athlete dedicated to fitness for most of my adult life. However, my job demands…read morehave taken me away from my fitness routine in the past ten years. Recently, I had an "aha moment" when John helped me understand the difference between motivation and discipline. I realized that more than relying solely on motivation to exercise is needed as it is short-lived. The key is discipline to maintain fitness, and it helps to reap the rewards of being fit. I have missed the endorphins, how my body feels after a workout, and the energy boost that accompanies regular exercise. Although my mind is still like I'm in my 20s and 30s, my body is not. I don't want to hurt myself, so I can't push my body like I used to. I have tried Boot Camp and other trainers, but I needed help finding proper one-on-one guidance to ensure I am doing the right exercises with the correct form and reps. I also need to find out when I have reached my body's limit or if I'm working the correct muscle group. That's why I chose John as my trainer. In my first session with John, I realized he knew what he was doing. In just 30 minutes, I have seen more results than in my previous program. John trains efficiently, motivates me at every step, and gives clear and direct instructions on proper technique and which muscle groups to focus on. He demonstrates each move and adjusts when necessary. He also offers a nutrition program and is invested in my success. John has helped me understand the importance of different muscle contractions in weightlifting variations for my program. My experience has been that most trainers only focus on concentric muscular contraction, such as bench press, bent-over row, or lat pulldown. However, I had a complete slap tear about five years ago and lost a lot of strength and mobility. John introduced me to isometric and eccentric movements essential for strengthening weakened muscles. Slow, methodical movements create tension in the right areas. I am amazed at my progress in building muscle, and gaining mobility and confidence in my sessions. I am not trying to lose body fat; instead, I want to build strength, and John is taking me down the right path. I was down ten pounds in my first three weeks, and my muscle mass increased gradually. I am extremely satisfied with my results so far, and I promise you that if you choose John's services, you will not be disappointed.

The YMCA is a great community resource and does a lot of great things with classes, programs for kids, has a pool and a sauna and a Jacuzzi. But my exercise routine for years has been to use the treadmill and then to use weight machines. Planet Fitness has an interesting business model. They take over existing spaces, this used to be a Staples, and it's a really big space. For what I do this really meets my needs. Parking is much easier than at the YMCA. They have duplicates on most of the machines and they're not crowded together. To keep their costs low they don't have classes, fitness trainers, or a lot of other things. There are usually two people working and they are attentive to any questions or problems I've had. If I want the full experience of Jacuzzi, sauna, or other things I'll go to the Y. But just to have my regular workout Planet Fitness is very convenient and it's always clean. Recently I was in Bend and went to the Planet Fitness there. The parking lot was really crowded, it's in a strip mall. The machines were much more crowded together and it felt a little bit claustrophobic. But the staff was really nice and helpful when I had some trouble figuring out the treadmill

What kind of gym only has one staff member available? Since I couldn't tour, I stayed in the lobby and looked at the equipment within eyesight. After 10 minutes rude Karen TELLS ME I CAN'T DO THAT and that I need to leave. I explained I wasn't bothering anyone and asked why she's talking to a potential customer like this? But she said she wasn't going to argue with me and "At this point, you just need to leave." Jeez. No wonder Planet Fitness has a garbage reputation. I'm so glad Karen at the front desk stopped me from becoming a customer. Just 20 min earlier, I toured a different gym a block away. The staff were kind, respectful, and let me tour and try out their equipment as much as I wanted. I know it isn't too much to have decent customer service!
