But the whole experience was unprofessional and ultimately unhelpful when it came to doing our actual taxes. First, I didn't hear anything from them for a couple of weeks after our initial meeting. It required me following up to get an update. And then I had specifically asked for a heads up on whether we were likely to owe any taxes, since we were self-employed the past year and unclear whether we were paying sufficient estimated taxes. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. I would not recommend working with these folks. They seem like nice enough people but were either overwhelmed this tax season or understaffed. Either way, that exactly what you count on a tax account to be prepared for and they clearly failed.

I called Dominion early in January and was able to get a spot as a new client. (I later learned that they only open a few new client spots every year, so I recommend trying them in December or January if you want to get a spot.) I called the morning of my appointment to make sure they were still open, since a snowstorm had canceled schools and many local business closed for the day. Not only was Dominion still open, but they were able to move my appointment to earlier in the day since other clients had canceled. As soon as Carson was done with his previous appointment, he welcomed me back to his office and we started going through the paperwork. Carson was so great. It's clear that he is extremely familiar with the tax code and entered all my paperwork quickly. He helped me access some additional information online when we realized I needed an additional piece of real estate paperwork. He even explained some deductions that we were eligible for that I was unaware of and allowed me to submit that paperwork later after I collected the necessary information at home. Perhaps the most amazing part of all of it is that Dominion only charges a $150 flat fee for your personal taxes. I thought for sure it would be like one of these chain tax places where the base rate only applies if you are filing in one state or have a single W-2. Their price is more than fair to know that your taxes are done right and you are getting as many deductions as possible based on your individual situation. I'll definitely be back next year!

I'm just sayin'!). 2) You save yourself a couple hours arguing with your husband if I can "fake" not living in MoCo and not pay the higher tax rate...I mean, we live in Gaithersburg...that's *practically* Frederick County (with the lower tax rate), right??? 3) You don't make your significant other cry when you proudly proclaim that the Fed is going to give you a $1,335,830 refund...because you screwed up the decimal point thingie. By *A LOT*. Oops. Heh. Yeah, I know. I am the most highly functioning ditz on the planet. But here's the OTHER awesomething thing about CHC. Unlike other tax prep places (like, H&R Block, not that there's anything wrong with them), CHC *ALSO* does financial planning.SOOOO...when you get back that super awesome refund...you can INVEST IT...which CHC does as well. I've been working with Jonathan Cohen as my CPA for the last 4 years and it's been simply fantastic. I had a complicated (or what I thought was complicated) situation when I first became a client (multiple jobs/ living/working different states/trying to start a sole proprietorship) but Jon made it a breeze! He is extremely easy to work with as he is friendly, professional and incredibly knowledgable. Any time I have a question, he is very quick to reply via email or phone and always explained it in a way that I would understand him. Recently I had a question come up from the IRS and they asked for a response date by a certain date. I tried to engage with Arshad and he repeatedly told me that he is too busy taking care of his other customers whose taxes were due September 15. I expect a responsible tax mgr would not leave me hanging like this.
