The volunteers are there to help you -- they genuinely listen to your dietary needs and preferences and do their best to meet them. They offer a wide variety of fresh and shelf-stable foods from different stores, all clearly labeled and easy to navigate. Their signs are clear about giving shoppers 15 minutes to choose items, which keeps things flowing smoothly and fair for everyone. One of the best parts is the variety -- sometimes you'll even find items from places like Uwajimaya or other Asian markets. It's such a wonderful surprise to experience new foods and flavors you might not have tried otherwise. Each visit feels a little like a culinary adventure. The staff and volunteers are kind, respectful, and supportive. They truly value your privacy and make sure everyone feels welcome. They're also great about helping minors -- while minors can't shop on their own for safety reasons, the staff will still make sure they receive a full month's worth of food support if that's what they're seeking. If you call ahead, my suggestion is to have all your information ready -- just the facts, ma'am! It helps them answer your questions quickly so they can assist the next person in line.

The Food Bank relies on tens of thousands of volunteer hours each year to help those that it serves. If you find yourself skeptical about the amount of hungry people in Seattle, I invite you to volunteer at St Mary's and see what they do first hand and then judge the necessity. Any small doubt was pushed out of my mind when i arrived one morning for my shift and it was below freezing outside. The line was around the block well before the food bank opened, and the line was several hours wait once the food bank opened its doors. St. Mary's is tiny inside, but it serves many more people than many of the larger food banks in the area. If you do not have time to give, St Mary's also accepts donations of food, baby items, hygiene and other necessities. There is even a nice selection of vegetarian items available. Since I have been volunteering at food banks, I noticed that "one pot meals' and items that are easy to carry (non-canned) are preferable to some clients, as they are walking, sometimes very far, without a car. And as the song goes, people are strange when you're a stranger. Everyone there has been so kind and welcoming to me, even when I'm a little cantankerous, because I'm used to running the show wherever I go (head nurse/charge nurse/educator). Patient and tolerant when I'm at my worst, friendly and conversant when I'm at my best, they have softened the blow of what I've experienced since losing it all. We lost all our holiday moneys along with our rent and because we didn't have our ID all we could get was an emergency bag .all that contained was a few can good and some crackers and some stuff I didn't know how to make so we didn't get the things that everyone else received and they had our info in the computer already. They said they had to make sure we were not lying about our address what kind of shit is that who would lie to get help for the holidays I feel they go way overboard about proof of who you say you are. The management there is poor msnsgement. To deny people and then they pick what they think you will eat. Don't care for the people that work the front desk very rude and no compassion for the community

As time passed an HIV+ individuals can live a much more prolonged life, the organization expands its core strengths and mission to provide meals and services to other individuals with diet restrictions/home-bounded. I had the opportunity to volunteer here to help prep meals on a weekend and found the organization to be very well-run. I went from peeling carrots, cubing spaghetti squash to skinning baked fish. What I liked what the staff seemed to care a lot about making sure volunteers are guided well to know what to do. They also cared about ensuring the food was prepped well. For example, if they saw some cubes were too large, they would help let us know..or would help let us know to ensure waste is properly composed. At the same time, the staff was super caring! They were so kind...they, for example, encouraged us to go eat some pizzas or snacks that they got donated to keep volunteers' stomachs happy in the facilities, too. Really wonderful experience! I'm definitely thinking of taking my SO to visit here on his free time, as it was pretty relaxing to work in industrial kitchen and just prep meals doing something good for the community at the same time! :)
