I then reached out to Sound Shade and Shutter via email (listed below) and made contact with Gary Merritt a couple of weeks later. We exchanged a few messages and scheduled an appointment for Gary to visit my home and provide me with an estimate. Gary Merritt seemed knowledgeable with my Roll Shutter and expressed an interest to repair it for me. Gary Merritt told me he would provide me with an estimate by end-of-week and thought he could finish the job in a couple of weeks time. Gary Merritt never sent me the estimate (he had my phone number and email address) and after a few weeks I tried contacting him via email - there was no reply, so I tried leaving voicemail messages again - there was no reply. I assumed Gary Merritt was busy and just forgot, but I was confused why he wasn't at least replying to my email to tell me he was delayed. Fast forward to September 2022. After several attempts to contact Gary Merritt via email and phone, my partner tried calling him. After a number of phone messages and emails, Gary Merritt finally responded to her and scheduled time to visit our home again. Gary Merritt arrived and started working with her as though he was never previously at our home. I expressed my concern to Gary Merritt and he provided a very specific diagnosis. I expressed to Gary Merritt "I am interested in having the shutter repaired, please send us an estimate and put us on your schedule for the repair". I informed Gary Merritt I would happily pay for his work after we confirmed the shutter was working properly. Gary Merritt said he would provide an estimate and put us on the schedule. Once again, Gary Merritt disappeared. We called and left several messages (phone and email) for him again. A few weeks later he replied informing us he would not guarantee his work. What a complete waste of time. I highly recommend you do not work with Sound Shade and Shutter. They lack professionalism, they lack confidence in their work, and they refuse to guarantee results of their work - that is IF you receive a response from them. I feel like we dodged a situation where Gary Merritt started the job only to walk off and never reply again. 2410 Tyndell Circle, SW Tumwater, WA 98512 (206) 661-5621 (360) 742-3600 info@soundshadeandshutter.com

First, there were several sheet metal screws left around the deck and in our driveway after they left - one of them ended up in my truck tire. Also, during the estimate we talked about covering up our existing 4X4 posts with the same material used on the new posts (to match). I don't think it made it into the statement of work however. Still, I called them to ask if I could pay to have them come out and add this. No response. Called again and left message - no response.

Big Promises - Little Follow Up…read more I DO NOT recommend you use Better Homes Home Improvements (BHHI) for two reasons: poor follow up after initial construction and shoddy craftsmanship. Background: We contacted BHHI to build a deck and pergola cover in our back yard. We worked with John Boughal, starting in August, 2017. He was very easy to work with and is very experienced. We signed a contract and used the company's recommended credit union. The total project cost: 15,000. Because of the summer rush, construction did not begin until October. Construction took three days and the workers were pleasant and professional. However, as part of tying in the deck to the house, they had to cut into the hardiboard siding. Their process left a 3" gap between the deck and the hardiboard. It took some conversations with John to convince him to put in trim to cover the gap. Once they were complete and left, they left trash, sawdust, and extra screws. They also did not fix the hardiboard siding and left the trim unpainted on the ends. By December, the gutter end piece fell off, the deck pieces started to warp, and one corner of the deck started to raise. I called John and left messages, took pictures and sent two texts. I received no answers. In June, I called the main office and talked to Paul, a co-owner. He said he would have someone come out and fix the problems. A week later, some guys came out and fixed the boards with extra screws. The funny thing was that they mentioned that they knew about this type of board warping --- why did they not add extra screws during initial construction? They also caulked the exposed nails on the trim and said they would come back to pait the trim. Shortly after talking to Paul, I did receive a call from John apologizing for not returning my calls/texts because he receives a lot of spam on his phone? A month later, the workers have not returned. I took pictures and sent a text to Paul. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from John saying that he never promised to paint the hardiboard or trim. That they never do that and some people prefer the 3" gap with flashing exposed. Here is what I think: I am paying $15,000 for a deck and cover. For that amount of money, I believe I deserve to receive a professional product (and warranty) that seamlessly ties into my house and maintains the integrity of the house against weather and insects. For shoddy craftsmanship and poor follow-up, I do not recommend you use this company.

If you could describe Exteriors West with one word it would be "Outstanding" with a capital O. Dan, who is owner and installer, has got the installation down to a science. Dan arrived at my home around 8am to install a 16' X 20' aluminum patio cover which he flawlessly and meticulously installed by himself and completed around 6:00pm, Including cleanup. He has been doing this work for 25 years now and it shows! Do you remember the days of great customer service and honesty of business owners in the 50's? Well there are a few still out there and Dan is one of them. Maybe that is why the Better Business Bureau has given Exteriors West an A+. He completed the patio cover then proceeded to look over the cover with a fine tooth comb, wiping down the cover removing any finger prints or dirt he saw then he continued to look it over and painting any scratch or blemish with the factory touch up paint. Just this alone took about 45 minutes to an hour this is how meticulous Dan is and what kind of commitment he has to make everything perfect. When Dan started the job he put down sheets of cardboard and covered my deck with it to protect it. And at the end of the job he swept up his work debris and picked up the cardboard. He then blew off my deck with a leaf blower and picked up any stray garbage. My deck was left cleaner than when he got there. Then fit and finish of my cover is outstanding! From the planning, selection of materials and construction, Dan has been very patient and full of information and suggestions. If you need a patio cover, carport, RV cover, railings, window awnings, whether it be residential, commercial or industrial, Exteriors West is the company you want to go with. He said he does jobs all around Washington and told me he had just returned from a commercial job in Oregon. Sorry if this sound like a commercial but when I find a company that does an outstanding job all the way around, I have to tell someone. And today, you're that someone.

DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. I WOULD GIVE ZERO STARS IF I COULD. Here is my story…read more.. Project took place on our neighbor's property approximately June 17th-24th, 2020. We had no contract with American Built Fence for replacing our gate. Only an estimate was given to us by our neighbor. The estimate was for 8 feet of fence and a gate, when in reality it was only 3 feet of fence and a gate. We were never contacted in any way (phone, email, text, or in person) by American Built Fence about replacing our gate before, during or after the project. I came home one day towards the end of our neighbor's project to the gate replaced. However, the gate was 8" in the air and did not have a handle. Shortly after, American Built finished our neighbors project and left the site. They never had any contact with us about how the gate turned out or any other contact and any other time. And they left our side of the fence and gate area a mess including soil, large chunks of concrete, as well as pieces of our neighbor's shed they had demolished. In addition, during the project they were drinking (and drunk) on the job. They finished off a 12 pack between three guys one afternoon. To make matters worse they even left their garbage (including beer bottles) on our property. (Wish I would have taken pictures!) They also damaged our vegetation including breaking branches that were a few feet off the fence line. A few weeks later when I was contacted about paying, we called and voiced our complaints (finally realizing they weren't coming back to clean up). We told them we would pay the amount they billed (which was higher than it should have been - based on 8 feet of fence versus 3 feet), but they needed to come back and lower the gate to the correct height as well as put on a handle. I text (which is how they were [very unprofessionally] contacting me) and they didn't text me back about coming back to fix/complete the job. When they didn't get back to me, I called the office and was told the lady was out of the office and would give me a call back. She never called back. On September 1, 2020 just 5 weeks later, I received a letter from a debt collector and realized they must have immediately turned me into a debt collector rather than trying to work things out with us.

In the fall of 2019 my wife and I decided that we needed a large deck put on the back of our house…read more My wife has some mobility issues so we had specific requirements that we needed in this deck. We got several bids and after meeting with Shane we knew he was the guy. He helped us design a beautiful 300sqft Trex deck that allows for our BBQ and entertaining passions. Throughout the process we faced a lot of setbacks at the hands of Mother Nature. Our setbacks included terrible rain, some serious flooding. Supplies being delayed and the supplier almost trying to crush their company truck and then additional delays caused by the beginning of COVID-19 closures. None of these setbacks I would directly blame on the contractor. They also had to get rid of an employee and got backed up on other work. So in the end the construction took a lot longer than expected. However we now have the perfect deck with custom low slope stairs that are perfect for my wife. The level of craftsmanship is exactly what we were looking for and now our deck is beautiful, solid and makes the exact statement we wanted it to on our house. We have already used Shane for some fence repairs and we would not hesitate to use them again for other projects. In the end like all projects we ended up a little over budget and it took longer than we had anticipated but we got an amazing deck that we love and that has already impressed neighbors.
