Tasty Food. After a long travel day, I decided to stop in here for some Indian food. I am glad I did. I enjoyed my meal. The presentation was very nice. My waiter was very polite. I think I'm being conscientious on Yelp (and other review sites) when I search places are still open and bookmark them... *How about you read the reviews, Elaine?*. This restaurant was on a website I use for finding local vegetarian and vegan places and it was only as I entered that I saw the three reviews were from 2008, 2009, and 2012. As often happens when you sit at a table we were handed menus and asked if we wanted a drink. One of my pet hates is being asked that when I've not located a drinks menu, if there is even a drinks menu. The waiter was going to come back but I went quickly to the draft beers page and ordered the only one they had, a Cobra. Indian restaurants should be the easiest place to get vegan food given how many people in India are vegetarian but it oftens poses the most problems. Here, it seemed some staff had the duties of taking drinks and money, and others had the responsibility of taking food orders. I thought I'd start with asking if the vegetable pakora was ok for vegans... she looks at me and shakes her head "No.." Me: "Does it have milk...egg...?" "Yes". "What about the samosa or onion bhaji?" Again she kind of grimaced and shook her head. Then we went to the mains. Tarka Daal? No, it has cream/ghee, I can't remember which. Well, of course it does. Then we were told that that type of food isn't what they do - "because it doesnt taste as nice that way" - and Indian Ocean around the corner was better for vegetarians. Good to know when we were already sitting with two pints. Basically, some Indian restaurants cook fresh to order, but I got the feeling these guys want to cook fast, serve fast, and get their tables back for the next round of paying customers. Faffing about with replacing ghee with a veg oil won't fly. So, we were told any veg curries except the daal were ok, so we enquired about another two and were told they weren't suitable either. Some dishes clearly said they were cooked with butter, cream or ghee, but others didn't but they were, too. We went with a potato curry and a cauliflower curry which were listed as vegetable sides but we asked for them as mains. At this point she said we could have most of the chefs main curries with vegetables but I like potatoes and I like cauliflower and couldn't be bothered with the vagueness of "vegetables" and potentially having to dissect it for chunks of mushrooms - the only vegetable I don't like. Food came in less than 10 minutes. The chapattis were lovely. Curries were fine. When the bill came it was around £9.50/£9.95 for each main when the veggie chefs mains were £8.95 so I'm sure the prices were bumped up, possibly as minimum spend per person on food was £12.95. I'm giving two stars rather than one as the other staff - whom we didn't need to engage with in as much dialogue - we friendly and prompt and the food we ended up with satisfactory. read more

Very nice Indian restaurant in Inverness. Went there during a 2-day visit to Inverness and Loch Ness. Agreeable decor, fair selection of different dishes (including many vegetarian options for those of us so inclined). Had a starter (chicken chat) and a mains (mixed Tikka grill). Both dishes weren't huge, but well prepared and tasty. Usual sides. The restaurant doesn't look like much from outside, but is actually fairly agreeable. Staff are friendly, too. On weekends it does get busy, so reservation is recommended. A short walk from the city centre. But then, ANYthing in Inverness is a short walk. read more

We stopped by here on our tour of Scotland. Heard good things about Indian food in the UK and figured "why not!?". Had the tandoori chicken, and a few other things (all good). The chicken was fabulous, and we both agreed one of the best we've had, great spice and heat for the food. A perfect UK Indian food experience for a pair of out of towners. read more

Really horrible, everything tasted like badly mixed up pre-packaged frozen horrers.. The old indian chef, Birds Eye is obviously in charge of the veg for the veggie options, but the chicken was crap too, could no warn you all highly enough to steer clear, wanted to warn everyone who came in after us to run like the clappers!! read more

To access this restaurant you have to go down stairs from street level so there are no windows. This doesn't sound nice however it was quite pleasant as it felt secluded and like a mysterious Aladdin's cave. The waiters were dressed in traditional Indian Colonial wear which was funny to see (ironic I mean not laugh out loud and for all you ladies out there who like a man in uniform then do not miss this!!!) in Inverness but a nice change to the scruffy attire of other restaurant staff. The place was quite quiet when we went with only two other tables so it worked out that there were about two waiters per person and they were so attentive that if you raised an eyebrow they were over in a flash to cater for your every need. They certainly made you feel very special!!! Don't get me wrong, the food was good. I'm very fussy and particularly when it comes to Indian cuisine as I have found two restaurants that I love and nothing else can quite live up to them. This place is a great Indian restaurant and will probably go right up to the top of your list if you're a lover of this kind of food so please do try this restaurant. The papadums came with lots of different dips which were all tasty and unique. I then had the Tandori Mixed Kebabs for starter. The chicken and beef were tender and succulent but I wasn't convinced with the lamb part of this course as it didn't taste right and the person sharing this plate with me agreed. For main I had the Kashmiri (chicken with fruit) which was creamy and tasty, Pilauo rice and Peshwari Nan. Please remember though if this doesn't seem like a glowing review, I'm a harsh critic of Indian restaurants and don't let that put you off. I'd definitely recommend you to try this place and decide for yourself as it was a great restaurant, wonderful service and tasty food. read more

The worst Indian restaurant I have ever experienced. We should have left when we were told you cant order starters and main entries separately. Having alot of Indian friends and co-workers to have Indian foods with, it is hard to dip below 2 stars unless your a fast food joint. Where do you start on why this is bad. Chutney, some of this stuff is sweeter than coca cola. and the staff came and argued with us, quote(Things change, maybe yall are not with the times) Everything cooked in sauce tasted like a a recipe for a diabetic trying to commit suicide. So the Biryani dishes are ok, but everything with curry tasted like it was prescribed by Willie Wonkas factory. Nothing went right here, it's like buying an British union assembled automobile, your about to get screwed. read more

I was in Inverness for one evening and went here for dinner as it was near my hotel. I thought the food was very good. Since I am from the States, where good Indian food is not easy to find, I may not be the best judge but the shrimp biryani was the best I have ever had. I was frankly surprised to find Indian food this good in the highlands. Service was excellent. There were several groups with some children and the staff handled them well. If I am ever in Inverness again, which I would like as I found it very pleasant., I will return. read more

Rajah is a great restaurant in the highlands of Scotland, in Inverness to be process. This restaurant prides itself on offering high quality food for anyone that crosses its path. I have only been here once and I must admit I was impressed with the food. From what I understand it is a long established restaurant in the area and it is very popular with the locals. The restaurant itself is not overly extravagant, it is fairly small but very authentic when you get inside, the music and the dim lighting give off a great atmosphere and you could almost feel like you are in India. I'm not a fan over hot curry so this place is good for me as they offer a wide variety of mild meals so there is something for everyone. It is not overly expensive for an Indian; I would go back again if I was in the area read more

This is an excellent Indian Restaurant/takeaway. I have eaten here many times in the past and have always had a really nice meal. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the service is excellent! The food was excellent and sells all the Indian food from my favourite Chicken Tikka Masala, to more spicier curries. The meals are medium priced, not cheap but not too expensive either. read more

Last night we went to Rajah due to the reviews it had been given as well as the accolades it had shown in front of it's establishment. We were sorely disappointed with the quality of the food as well as the service we had while there. Both of is being vegetarians Indian restaurants are usually an easy place to get wonderful food that is varied. However all of the dishes we ordered from the vegetarian section were bland with little spice, all tasting like similar tomato dishes. One of the dishes we ordered was with okra and the okra was not well cooked or of good quality. When we asked for more spice because the food was very mild we were given another mild tomato sauce to put on it. Finally, when ordering we were informed each customer had to have a minimum of £10 spent, which we completely understood, so we ordered an extra dish..... Yet when our bill came it was well over the minimum. Needless to say we will not be going back. read more

ordered a chicken rogan takeaway, got home to find they had given me a chicken korma. When I telephoned, not an apology but insisted I had ordered korma. !00% DID NOT - the reason? We were in Inverness, Scotland last week and tried the Rajah restaurant. The staff was very attentive and we enjoyed our meal.

I'm not sure what experience the two other reviewers had, but this was a fantastic escape from the otherwise bland British cuisine in town. Impeccable service as well, and the food was wonderful. A little off the beaten path as it's on a side street, but worth a visit. read more

A Curry House that delivers a little more than the bland lunch menu. Seating is downstairs where you will be met by polite staff. Try their chilli lamb Curry it will certainly warm you up on a cold day! read more

In September my husband and I (in our late 60s) took a coach tour of Scotland and we stayed in a Bed and Breakfast on the other side of the River Ness. The owner recommended two Indian restaurants. By the time we had a full day sightseeing and walked across the river and found the first one, we were exhausted. Due to a health condition, I do not eat a lot at night, so we assumed with my husband eating a full meal that it would be all right for me to select rice and another side dish as we normally do in the US. We were seated in an empty restaurant and given water. When the owner heard that I wasn't going to buy a full meal, he asked us how much we were willing to spend and I told him that I could only eat rice and a side dish at night due to my health. He crossed his arms and said "No" and walked away. We were immediately escorted out. We then tried Rajah. My husband went down several stairs to inquire and the waiter seemed fine with my situation, but once I went downstairs, we were once again turned away. If you are willing to spend, perhaps the staff in this and the other restaurant will treat you well. We have never been kicked out of anywhere, must less two restaurants in 20 minutes!
