Shapla is a good restaurant with a nice view of the River Ness. We got a takeaway order of vegetarian entrees and sides. Everything was well flavored and the portions were excellent. We also tried the garlic naan, papadam, and an order of a green chili and cheese bread (I can't remember which type). I think they may have accidentally given me regular instead of the chili/cheese, which was an honest mistake. But, the staff was extremely friendly and the manager or owner (I didn't ask) talked to me for a few minutes about how enjoyable Inverness is for the slow pace. I appreciated him taking time out to chat with a out-of-towner and I'd definitely visit again if I ever found myself in the region again. read more

THEE BEST INDIAN FOOD IN TOWN! I haven't a clue why people are bashing this place - I've eaten at nearly every Indian restaurant in Inverness but choose not to rate the ones that are over priced and subpar because I'm a traveler from America / California where Indian food is readily available and I understand how difficult it is to sustain a business in the food industry. The service here provided by Ali was EXCELLENT! The view of the river Ness is absolutely fabulous!! And the food was extremely well prepared. The naan was the best I've ever had - light, flakey and delicately flavored. The main meal was superbly flavored!! Full disclosure, we stopped in here after being turned away from no less than 5 other restaurants nearby because we didn't have a reservation on a Wednesday night in August (pro tip: get your reservations, people!). Second disclosure, I am writing this after enjoying a whiskey flight from The Malt Room which was amazing, btw. Listen, the reviews on here are less than flattering but we had a nice dinner! The view was spectacular and the service was attentive, if also maybe a little curt. The serving sizes are quite generous. The location is very convenient to downtown. I'm by no means an expert or connoisseur of this type of cuisine but I thought my meal was tasty and the price was reasonable. We had pappadum, chicken palak, chicken tikka Balti, naan, the saffron rice, the coconut rice, a pint of Cobra, and a nice strong poor of the house white wine and got out of there for under 50 pounds. The coconut rice was too sweet. I probably wouldn't have noticed that the Balti was a little sweet if I hadn't read the other reviews. Other than that the food was very good and we left satisfied with our experience. I think this is worth a try, especially if you're caught in the literal rain without a dinner reservation. read more

What a find. I can see that some of the reviews are down on both the service and the food, but our experience passing through Inverness and stopping at Shapla was very different--both service and food were excellent. They seemed to specialize in Balti. curry, which was a flavorful alternative to the typical Indian curries that I've had elsewhere. I think I ordered Balti chicken tikka, and it was sort of what I wish all chicken tikka masala were like: more garlic, more onion, just all around a stronger dish. My wife likes tamer dishes, and I think their butter chicken might have been her all-time favorite dish of any kind anywhere. The wait staff were both attentive and patient with our little group of travel-weary tourists. In short, I highly recommend Shapla and would absolutely eat here again for my first meal if I ever found myself back in Inverness. read more

The best Indian in Inverness. The food is fantastic, reasonable cost and hearty portions. If you are early you will get a seat by the window looking over the river. The service is good and if you are in a large party the waiters will happily play along with many of their own gags. read more

DO NOT USE!!! Initially noticed they had messed up my order, one of the dishes was not what I ordered. So I phoned and spoke to Ali who said they couldn't do anything about it and would give me the right starter with my next order. After finally settling down to eat, discovered curry was cold and inedible, plucked up guts to phone and ask for this to be resolved only to be called a liar! 1 star is for decor and view. The rest of that restaurant was shocking!! Went there for our Valentines meal, and my husband and I were horrified. Waited 25 minutes for drinks. My lemonade tasted like the syrup lines had run out, so sent it back. Seems they just poured me a new one, and asked if the second was ok. Still not... They said they'd sort it. They didn't. I didn't have a drink my whole time there. Dinner eventually arrived... and aside from only about 4 or 5 pieces of meat per curry... it was tasty... We then sat, and waited, and sat and waited to ask someone for the bill. I then got up and asked a waiter... He said 'Ok, right away' - 10 minutes later, we were still waiting to pay. We then both got up to ask for the bill at the bar... and they asked us to sat in the bar area and wait. By the time I left... I was so sick of waiting for anything... and still dying of thirst... I would strongly encourage no one to return. It ruined my and my husband first Valentine's meal married... The surrounding tables from us, we could also hear them complaining. Another great indian restaurant that Inverness has to offer. It offers good views over the river and great food. I do enjoy a nice indian and this definitely is worth a try. Prices are pretty good and the service is great too. I've had several nice meals here and would certainly go back there if only there weren't so many other nice places to eat in Inverness. Should you be travelling from Beauly then (from Telford Roundabout adjacent Aldi, following signs for Fort William, turn into Bishops Road, first left past the LGA's H&I, Civic Halls past the roundabout then, on toward the river & first right adjacent Highland Hospice & Leonard Cheshire Homes, immediately next to the suspended iron foot bridge & first right. In the most unlikely event it is full, there is a good turning circle therein. Should you have travelled from the town and /or city centre, having crossed Ness Bridge turn first left into Ness walk. Drive on past the Cathedral & Eden Court Theatre, turn left. At the mid -suspended footbridge, turn first right into UHI, first right & follow the road around the back thereof where ubiquitous free parking should almost invariably avail. This parking is probably less than 500m from Bught Park, (north bankside of river Ness) as is The Aquadome, Tennish Club, Leonard Cheshire Homes, Highland Hospice, Eden Court Theatre, St Andrews Cathedral, Palace & Columba Hotels, the Riva & Rocpool restaurants. The City Centre, Castle & Museum (South bankside of river Ness) as is The Tavern Ness Islands, need I say more? Should one be staying at the Columba & Palace Hotels given the awful parking thereabouts it maybe best drop off luggage & go park ones car at Riverside Gardens & as & when necessary, collect & drive back to collect baggage) all delightful walks alongside the river, anytime of year, bad & notably in good weather. Having resided there at No 32, Bishops Park, IV3 5TB circa 2006 - 12 & ditto, Riverside Gardens 2017, I can assure you, I never ever got tired of leaving both car & motorcyle & walking or cycling there along. Ruined our Christmas day! I don't even feel like giving one star to this place! It was a nice Christmas day. I thought of treating my family to some nice Indian food. But we had to face the most embarrassing dinner ever. The person who took our order first welcomed us by telling that we needed to spend a minimum of £10 per person. This was the first instance when we were embarrassed. Later on the waiter/manager was very rude to us. He didn't understand a word of what we were ordering. We had ordered a Fanta and he got us a lemon fanta which we were not expecting (Fanta is usually orange). Even then i told him that we wanted an orange fanta and on that instead of changing the order the person asked me to order "sensibly". I was taken aback when he said that. He embarrassed me in front of my family and that too on Christmas eve. I tried to reason with him that i didn't like the way he told me that I should order sensibly whereas it was his mistake in the first place. To my horror he started arguing with me and by this point he was kind of intimidating me. At one point he told me that i was wasting his time and that i should leave the restaurant if i wasn't happy. I mean that was shocking!! Embarrassed enough by this time i decided to quietly leave the place. Thanks for ruining my family's dinner and that too on a Christmas day!!. That's the worst thing anyone could do to someone... Please don't waste your time here. Its a waste of your money and the worst customer service ever. Later on an Indian friend told me that it was not even a real Indian restaurant. It was just an another Bangladeshi cuisine under the name of Indian place trying to fool the people. read more

My husband and I went to the Shapla in Inverness for our 1st anniversary meal. The setting is lovely with the views of the river ness, but thats the only good thing about this restaurant. I ordered a starter called mixed platter and my chicken came to me RAW! shocked they took it away and gave me another one in its place. I did not touch it as it put me right off. The table and cutlery was basic had to keep asking for napkins and forks, at one point had to get them myself. The main meal was supposed be chicken tikka masla but it was a watery runny yellow colour with cauliflower, green beans I and I think they were peas. What can I say, I am not a foodie but the I couldn't eat it. My husbands was the same, but he ordered a different dish?? doesn't make sense, we complained but still had to pay £50 for a meal that was not edible at all. I would't even give this restaurant 1 star but had to to write a review. If you value your taste buds and your stomachs well being avoid at all costs! read more

I have read many of the reviews claiming poor service and inauthentic food. I can only say what my experience was, and i thought it was very good. I was early, and got a table at the window, with a view of the river and the bridges. That was a big plus, and added a star to my review. (If you don't get a window table, you'll probably find the decor to be "meh.") The service was attentive, but not obtrusive, which is my preference. (In general, i found service throughout Scotland to be significantly inferior to the normal standard in the U.S. Shapla Tandoori would not be a standout for service in the US, but it was much better than many of my experiences across 18 days in Scotland.) The menu promoted the Balti, so I ordered Paneer Balti. The waiter cautioned me that it took longer to prepare than other dishes. (I added a star to my review for his candor. I like service that gives me honest information and better control over my dining experience.) I figured, what with the panoramic view, some starters (aubergine pakora...should have been cooked in hotter oil and a lighter batter), and a beer, (or two) the wait would be fine, and it was.
