I didn't even rate some of those courses as 5 Stars for various reasons whether it be the price, staff, or course conditions. Indian Springs is a wonderful course in southern Illinois that presents unexpected challenges and forces a player to use all 14 clubs in their bag. It isn't a 5 Star Course based on Bent Grass, hosting a PGA event or towering fairway bunkers but rather due to the prices, owners, and use of the terrain implemented into their design. This is a wonderful course that has various leagues, hosts tournaments, and treats its guests like friends. Most importantly (to me) is the fact that the owners are beyond friendly and extremely hospitable. I love visiting Indian Springs because she makes me feel like family and is genuinely excited to see me and always thanks me for my Military Service. I won't be playing here for a few years as I move to England but I like forward to coming back next time I'm in Southern Illinois visiting.

Friendly pro shop…read more Two of us played through a couple of foursomes on the front. they were friendly and accommodating The reason for a four star instead of five was two groups that did not play the front teed off in front of us on the back. they were extremely slow and did not offer for us to play through. I think the pro shop should keep an eye out for groups going off the back, and/or tell every group that checks in not to go off the back.

This would have easily been spotted by a ranger. As for the course itself, I've seen it in better shape in the past. The grass here is about 1-2 inches taller than most other courses. Even the greens needed a good trim, though the greens overall weren't too bad. Just very slow due to the taller grass. Perhaps coming here on a day they've actually mowed would make a difference. There were also some nice views overlooking the lake. But I'm not there for the view...

You have to move your ball out of a bare spot and try and find a smooth track to the green. To be this late In the season and the shape of the greens they should be giving a reduced rate. Most courses this time of year have leaves everywhere and you have a hard time finding your ball. The leaves were all finely mulched and I did not lose a ball in 18 holes. Me and the guys had a great time and also adult beverages in the clubhouse. We will be back. .
