The Brazos River is the unofficial divider of East and West Texas, but the Hill Country serves as the physical boundary of two regions and not simply the state. Its defining characteristic is the karst topography that permeates the landscape. I recommend purchasing the Texas State Parks annual pass which allows for access to all Texas SNA for one year and supports the natural areas in the State of Texas. I really appreciated the staff at Hill Country SNA; I found numerous examples of the trail being maintained to prevent erosion and overuse using natural barriers like tree limbs. On Saturday, February 28th, 2026, I encountered a bobcat on Cougar Canyon Overlook Trail. Cats are very infrequently encountered in the wild by humans; I have seen many black bears in the Appalachian Mountains, but never a cat. If you desire to see a cat, I would recommend hiking in the morning or evening as they are crepuscular.

Located…read morenear Bandera, the drive was nice through winding hills and views of exotic animals along the way. Upon entrance to the park, you'll notice a change in the road, not paved whatsoever. A bit of a rugged drive, but not outrageous. Parking was plentiful and we walked toward the visitor building. Inside that building was the most helpful and friendly park ranger, Ms. Juarez, happy to help and spend time to answer any questions. She gave us a nice big legible map and gave us suggestions on trails. Being our first time here, we opted for the "challenging " peak trail. It was a beautiful hike- plenty of signage, plants were labeled, and many variations of yuccas landscaped the area. The hike up to the peak was not that bad actually, not sure I'd call it challenging, but more moderate. It was very doable and there were quite a few benches along the way for beautiful views and/or to take a break. Coming down was easy and we took a few other trails back to the parking lot for alternate scenery. Horses and bikes are allowed. Bathrooms are located at the visitor center and at a few of the other parking lots. We had a pass- free entrance for military and for me as a family member $6 Wonderful place to hike! Our…read moredistrict's spring break was later than the local spring break, so none of the river companies we reached out to returned our calls-- none except Peaceful Valley. I'm glad they didn't. Joe works a stretch of the Medina river far from the crowded parks in Kerrville, and provides a personalized level of service that I have not previously experienced. Instead of providing a one size fits all float, he wanted each paddler's age and weight to make sure he had the right equipment. Instead of picking an available slot that fit his schedule, he worked around ours. It was perfect. The stretch of river he works is unique. The water level was a bit low so there were a few spots where we had to get out, but it was well worth it to not see another soul the entire trip! Since was no set schedule or deadline to meet, we took our time and enjoyed the day. We enjoyed the nesting hawks in the cypress trees, the river turtles, and swimming with the fish in the crystal clear water. Per Joe's recommendation, we brought goggles to see the fish better. I recommend a snorkel as well! Also per Joe's advice, we brought carrots and visited his friendly and frisky donkeys after our float. The kids loved it! Highly recommended!

The back-in slip we had came with a 30A outlet with no breaker! Not good. We had to shut off our mains to prevent arcing. Then, there was the sewer line. It was above ground, and terminated with a 45° Wye! The straight end sat parallel to the ground, the wye at 45°. Neither made for an easy, reliable hook-up. If not for some fancy joinery using a bungee, I honestly don't know how my slinky sewer line would have stayed connected. Also, since the 45° sat at about a foot above grade, drainage was very bad. There is very bad TV reception here. We got three channels that pixelated too often to watch for more than a few minutes. Getting into our slip was OK. Getting out was hampered by badly pruned trees. The other slips had water and electricity, only. Wifi was good. Internet was viewable. No phone service unless you went with wifi, which we didn't try. The price was very right at $35 a night, total. Even so, I don't believe I'll be coming back, since my RV slip was substandard. I do want to say, though, that the cabins looked very nice. If you're a family that goes the cabin route, you may want to consider this quiet, clean location. We didn't meet the owners, but my daughter, who stayed here at an earlier date, told me they are very nice.
