It may be small…read morebut it's artfully stocked to the gills and run by happy Spiritualists who are there to offer a warm hug and great conversation. Everyone seems to be a medium here so they are delighted to talk with you about those things that go bump in the night, premonitions and apparitions and won't think you're crazy in the least. If you don't see what you're looking for, Celeste will order it for you too. It's run completely by volunteers and they are always so happy to see you and share their latest discoveries. There's such a wonderful variety of offerings that would include many items that you might usually find at a Metaphysical Bookstore, like gems and minerals, vibrational healing jewelry, incense and all kinds of Tarot Cars plus all Spiritually based books new and used. But then there are the more specialize tools for mediumship development classes. So you can find trumpets and slates and of course crystal balls too! There's also some wonderful inspired artwork that's really unique.

Two stars for cleanliness and friendly staff…read more Three stars off for the most important aspect of a used bookstore... price. $5 per paperback? More for hardbacks? For a book whose spine is parting? Missing pages? C'mon. Don't even bother looking at most of what they call "Vintage" books. They ask a king's ransom for them. I found paperback after paperback that was priced at over $20 each... for a book barely 50 years old and a cover price of $1.50. Outlandish. I actually performed a reality check and went to Ebay to check on 7 or 8 of those titles. In each case the books sold for much less on Ebay than Helen is asking. They most definitely need to adjust their pricing schema. It's not like they're paying rent in downtown La Jolla for goodness sake. I was originally, upon walking in, going to say their large, diverse selection is a strength. Now I understand it's simply a function of them not selling their books at a good turnover rate at all... consequently, their stock piles up. Shame.

I could honestly stay in this place for at least a couple hours; there books wall to wall and they even have a large romance section in the back. I can't comment on the stock as I don't really read romance, unless it's for sh*ts and giggles. They have also got plenty of comfy chairs for you to sit around in, too. Pricing is average as many are half off the cover price. Some books are deeply discounted and are in little baskets scattered in the store. I'll definitely come here again! The only drawback is that they're open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays only.

When I am in need of some new reading material, I head to the PQ library When I need books for travel or the beach I go to the book store inside the PQ library called the Book Nook. This is a utilitarian place with wire rack shelves and used books but the prices are great and they frequently have very current books. I have found some great classics and some books that cost me 25 cents that are on the NYT best seller list. They have some fun cook books and there is even a section with older (and more expensive) collectibles. If you join the Friends of the library the prices range from 25 cents up to a dollar for most books and you are donating to a great cause because the proceeds of the sales and membership go to the library. You can also donate books and get a great tax write off. If your books are really new and in good shape they might use them for the library, and if they already have the book in stock it goes to the Book Nook. And the next day after you make your donation, I show up and buy the book. You see, while I have tried to sell you on the noble aspects of donating and buying and the great benefits of keeping your tax dollars, in the end, its all about me needing some fresh reading material. Thanks in advance!

This store is FABULOUS for middle grades with a lot of resource books, posters, supplemental…read morematerials, etc. As a former 6th grade and now current 4th grade teacher, I LOVE Critical Thinkers for my grade levels (Lakeshore has mostly primary materials). CT is by far the only teacher supply store with a good stock of materials for my students. They are also the only store I've found in North County San Diego that has grade appropriate materials for my grade levels. HOWEVER, they're hours are terrible as they are closed on weekends...the only days I can shop! During the week I am in my classroom until 4:30ish and with my own children/family to tend to, I can't make it before closing. I also live about 30 minutes away. Not very convenient for the typical teacher. Also, they're website rarely works and they're phone system tends to be down (I think it's a cell phone?? So it does a ringback tone and sometimes disconnects) I grew up going to Creative Teaching Supplies as a child looking for educational materials and was saddened when they moved to a smaller location (town center owner is terrible...screwed over many small companies in this shopping center). I was hopeful when I became a teacher 9 years ago that I'd be able to use Creative Teaching Supplies/Critical Thinkers for all of my educational needs, but the smaller location, terrible hours, and difficulty accessing the website has been very discouraging. I'm not giving up on them yet as they truly are a great teacher supplier (for ALL grade levels...unlike Lakeshore) and there really are no other stores like them in North County. However, I'm nervous they'll close their doors because of their out-of-the-way location, terrible hours, and unpredictable website/phone. I've had to rely on online ordering a lot lately because I can't get to Critical Thinkers and there are no other suppliers out there for my grade level. I hope things change soon! I love the owner and the staff! I'm hopeful things will pick up as the economy improves...
