This Randall's is always giving "sketchy-but-convenient" energy. Pro tip: if you're driving, park in the garage. I know it seems backwards, but you're way less likely to get approached by someone asking you to buy them something. For the record, the store doesn't feel unsafe--homeless unsafe--but sometimes, you just want to grab your groceries in peace. Now, something that never fails to annoy me: one of the entrance doors is always locked. Every time. So you're forced to walk around to the main entrance. Minor, but annoying. Thankfully, the elevators from the garage always work, so silver lining there if you park downstairs. Today I was reminded of another classic Randall's feature: the smell. I stopped in on my bike to grab some veggies and, like clockwork, was hit with that signature aroma, somewhere between a porta-potty and a city park at noon in July. I think it was coming from outside this time... but I've definitely caught a whiff inside before too. Is it overpriced? Yes. Is it so conveniently located that I keep coming back anyway? Also yes. To be fair, the prepared food section and the bread game are on point. If carbs are a love language, this place is fluent. Bonus points: they've added EV charging for our green-driving friends. It's just an ordinary grocery store, but it's clearly in a neighborhood that needs extra safety, as there's a security guard with a gun posted right at the entrance. It was something that really stood out, especially at night. The cleanliness was also a letdown; there was a lot of trash and food debris, especially in the fresh produce section. I grabbed some drinks and snacks, and the variety was just okay but not great either. Maybe it was just because I went at night, but the warm food didn't look very fresh or appealing. Avoid if you are handicapped temporarily or permanentl. I would even say to avoid if you are able-bodied as well due to BELOW POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! I made the unfortunate, & time wasting mistake of shopping (attempted to at least) here this morning. Being handicapped I entered the store and expected to see or find an electric handicapped scooter at the door for my use. Seeing none I used a shopping cart to aid me to the "customer service" lady (black w/green sweater) and asked if she could do me a favor. Before I could get the words out good she snapped back " I'm with a customer right now can't you see that?" I replied but I'm a customer too. She ignored me for 5 entire minutes before asking how can I help you. I told her that I was handicapped & needed a handicapped scooter. She said it was upstairs and expected me to take the elevator to get it. I asked if she could get it for me being I was in no condition to. So she calls for a guy named Carlos over the intercom. It took him 8 minutes to respond to her & bring the scooter to me. When I got on it I made it to the cheese section of the supermarket where it then died. I sat there about 10 minutes waiting for an employee to happen by when a black male employee stocker wearing a black sweater & pants sped by. I asked if he worked there (bc of lack of employee uniforms) and he said "No" and sped off. A second employee came by (female hispanic who honestly was the kindest, responsive, & nicest through the whole ordeal) whom I asked for help and she was kind enough to get me a shopping cart to prop myself on & lean walk my way back to the front. I asked if the guy who had just blew me off was an employee or not & she said yes he works here. I was appalled. Once I got there back at the front I saw the same dude signing papers at the customer service lane & tried asking him why did he lie to me & he raised his voice & said "What do you want???" In the angriest tone & volume. I told him I tried to get you to help me & you ignored me & lied to me about if you worked here. He stormed off and took the elevator upstairs. An assistant manager came by and an employee told me to talk to him (Hispanic male, bearded, short) Right off the R.I.P. he starts defending the store when I said they discriminate against black people and he never let me voice my complaint. Seeing he was incapable of resolving my issues (bc he couldn't even stop talking to listen & hear me out fully) the Hispanic female employee who had assisted me earlier & Wittnessed the conversation, pointed me to the store manager instead (middle aged black male, with black vest & pants) He was much more calm than the ASM, & heard me out and asked who was the employee who lied to me & yelled at me. I pointed in the direction that he went and the ASM who I wasn't talking to chimed in again to distract him from listening. At such point I told them that they are not ADA friendly as their scooters don't work nor Are they readily available. Overall this store has a sad work ethos towards how they treat black customers like me. I witness & have experienced the black employees being curt, short, I'll tempered, & barely want to help BLACK CUSTOMERS but cheerfully, gleefully, & be very chipper with non-black customer requests, & questions. I have spent THOUSANDS in this store over the few years but will take my business to the H-E-B on Washington Avenue from Now on. They have scooters at the ready in the entrance, cheaper prices, more parking, & GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE regardless of your race. read more

Honestly, for a local neighborhood spot, it's actually pretty decent. I'm really not sure why it has such poor overall ratings. Sure, it's not HEB, but that's okay. For its size (which isn't too small, by the way), it's got a good sampling of almost everything you'd need. The young woman who decorated the cake was fabulous! However, someone failed to make the cake that was ordered. My daughter wanted a two layer cake with a German chocolate cake with extra toasted pecans on it with strawberry purée in the middle topped with a vanilla cake layer with white icing and pink wording. I just wanted a money order. There's no one at the Customer service booth and no sign of when they will return. Me and a man patiently wait. I ask a cashier. They cut me off before I can ask and say "I don't know when they'll be back". So I say "is it like a time frame or since you're not doing anything can you come help us?" They say "No, I don't know when they'll be back." Rolls their eyes and continues to do nothing. The woman shows up after 5 minutes of waiting. I have Discover. On the machine it says credit or debit. I accidentally clicked credit. The lady says "we don't do discover credit". I say I have a debit card and can I try again. She says "We don't do Discover!". I'm like ok and leave. I come back and try again later in the day because my gut is telling me she is wrong. There's another lady working the booth there. I do the money order with my Discover debit and it goes through. I knew I was right. There are long lines and each cashier acts annoyed that you're asking them a question. I've never The store is congested and the layout doesn't make any sense. I wish this was an HEB instead. I'd even take a Walmart because at least it has more options. This store looks big on the outside but is very tiny in the inside. John smiles and gives that customer a very cheerful good day and goodbye, turns and looks me dead in my eyes, drops his head and mumbles "do you want a bag for this" I in turn replied "good morning" John then seems to have a moment of clarity as he nervously mumbles good morning back to me. Great selection of produce! Multiple men outside panhandling and asking customers for money. The security guard on duty was vigilant about protecting the customers. The guard saw me (a single female) leave and immediately followed and watched me get into my car. That was incredibly nice of him. He is doing his job and risking his safety to ensure others around him are safe. However, if he wasn't there I would've definitely felt unsafe. I actually try to avoid this location since it is so close to the bus station/greyhounds. There are a lot of shady folks around this area. So if you do need to go to the grocery store, please do not go alone if you are a lady. read more

This Randall store is my lifesaver. Whenever I'm at an event in downtown or midtown, I need cash. There isn't any bank opens on weekends. I always come here to buy something and get cash back. It's that buy "something" got me shop here more often. The more I know downtown or midtown; I have more love for this Randall's. First of all, the free parking with a garage is rare in midtown. Then, cleaner bathroom is a plus. But don't rely on the free WiFi. The definition of "free" really says no one can connect to it. Ha! I don't live in this neighborhood. For some odd reason they did not do what I asked them to do; & I ended up paying $20 more because of their mistake(my order would have minus 20 for 100 spending). This is like a scaled down version of a flagship Randall's. You can still find what you need just like any other clean Randall's except it's like 3/4 the size of an original for obvious reasons. This particular store was clean except for some type of cake that was on display near the front. It had mold on it and when I showed the lady that was doing something near this she quickly threw it in her cart but seemed a tad disturbed that I had the nerve to disturb her. Pretty much everybody had a somewhat friendly attitude here. The con, PARKING! Love the Baked chicken ! My review is mainly for the deli. I work 5 minutes away and this is my go to for lunch. They have the best grocery store baked chicken I've ever had ! All of the foods I've tried in the deli have been good. The Macaroni, kale salad, potato salad, fried fish, sushi, sandwiches...it's all really good and a lot cheaper than going to an actual restaurant. I get 2 pieces of chicken and 2 sides for 6.99 or 3 pc fish and 2 sides for 6.99 as well. Every day there is a 5 dollar sushi special. Now the not so good about the store is sometimes typically during lunch time (12-2pm) the lines can be pretty long and you'll be waiting about 10 minutes to get checked out. Today i was there at about 11:50 and I only waited on 1 person ahead of me. Also there are homeless people that come around and they may ask for money but you're in midtown there are homeless people everywhere it's not the stores fault and it's not an every time you go thing. Homeless people are people that are 9/10 suffering from an addiction or have a mental illness and some are really just on hard times so don't disrespect them if you see them politely decline if you don't want to be bothered. It's an okay supermarket. In my opinion it's a little dated, but not so outdated where I'm turning my nose up or anything. The good thing about this grocery store is that is is in the center of midtown; and it's easy for people who live and work in the area to shop. I've never experienced them running out of anything. But I do notice at times items that aren't on sale usually are a bit more expensive. The lines... omg. During certain times. The lines are so backed up. It's absolutely ridiculous. The parking.... there is a small lot in the front. But plenty underground. But the elevator to come up is so slow. And then it lets you off in front of the registers where the shopping carts aren't. I love the people here and I mean that with all my heart. The butchers are amazing and the service staff are impeccable but I feel like this store gets the step child treatment because of the area and numerous homeless people in the area. This has happened to me several times in the past month or two and each encounter has become more aggressive. It looked pretty nice and the inside kind of reminds me of Spec's on Smith Street - alot of options for items for entertaining (cheese, crackers, wine, etc). Abysmal, lackadaisical customer service. I am a radiation oncology patient, advised by my oncologist to use Aquaphor spray post-treatment to try to preserve my skin. I had seen it at Randall's, and I asked my friend who is doing yeoman's duty to help me while I'm sick, if she could pick it up for me. She was told by two people, Customer Service and a Pharmacist, that there was no such product. Below is a picture of the product ON THEIR SHELVES. I went today after treatment to show Customer Service and the Pharmacist the product at their store. Neither apologized. The Pharmacist said he was sure that wasn't what the Pharmacist on duty meant; Customer Service said she didn't know who to blame. I said blame wasn't the point; education was.
