This place has a special place in my foodie heart! The interior being a historic convenience store makes it feel homey and very local. I got here often with my roommate and always have a great time mix and matching any 6 beers into a 6-pack deal. The fatty brisket and sausage is amazing. I love that they offer a variety of menu items now as well. Steak nights, wine nights, and brunch options show how much effort they put in. I wouldn't say the bbq is the best I've ever had in Houston .... BUT still deserves a 5 star review in my book. read more

Update: Veronica reached out to me willing to make this experience right. Issues will come up from time to time but how you handle them says a lot about you as a business owner. I'm adjusting my review to reflect Veronica's willingness to turn this experience into an opportunity. We were looking forward to trying this restaurant while staying at a hotel in Houston for medical treatments. We had it delivered to our hotel and sadly it wasn't the best experience. When we got our order to the room we were missing one side that we ordered. We got Mac n cheese, green beans and potato salad with a brisket/smoked chicken combo and a brisket/ribs. I was shocked to see two pieces of brisket and a chicken breast for $28. Maybe it was an off night but the quality just wasn't there. All the food was cold (our fault bc we ordered it for delivery) and was lacking flavor. I ordered the ribs in the jalapeño cheddar sausage, but got the brisket with sausage.. very happy they mixed that one up because the brisket was extremely juicy tender and had a great flavor on that bark. Came here on our last day here in Houston and I must say it was one of the best BBQ spot I have ever tried here. We ordered sliced brisket with mac n cheese, coleslaw, chopped brisket sandwich, and a pecan pie. The sliced brisket was so juicy and tender with so much charred flavor. The meat was cooked to perfection and got me wanting more! The mac and cheese wasn't too overwhelming and actually complemented the meat. As for the brisket sandwich, I thought it was good in terms of the meat, however, I must say it reminded me of sloppy joes too much. If I had to choose, I prefer getting the brisket sliced over chopped. As for the coleslaw, it was fresh and not too overwhelming with the mayo, which I love. The ratio of cabbages and carrots were evenly distributed. Lastly, the pecan pie was not too sweet and really soft yet crunchy. We ordered BBQ at the counter and then walked around the store with my glass of wine. The cashier was welcoming, patient, friendly, & answered our questions. We ordered the combo plate to share: 2 meats & 2 sides. We selected smoked turkey (AMAZING!) and brisket (yummy!) with the creamy mac n cheese and sweet potato with kale sides. The creamy mac n cheese was delicious and served hot & very creamy. The sweet potato and kale was tasted fine, but served warm so I think I didn't get the full flavor. Walking around the store is a nice way to wait for your name to be called and see what you need to purchase. Had BRISKET and Spicy Smoked Cheddar SAUSAGE with GREEN BEANS and SWEET POTATO SALAD (never had the salad prepared this way - one of a kind). Extremely delicious BBQ! Recently visited Houston and of course, wanted to try alllllll the Bbq. I also prefer to try smaller, local restaurants versus big chains. Nothing wrong with the big chain restaurants but the small local places are hidden gems and something you can't get anywhere else. Thanks to yelp, I discovered Henderson & Kane. It is a small corner market in what seems like a neighborhood. There's a cute little free library out front and it doubles as not only the barbecue Café, but also a little corner market. I ordered a brisket sandwich and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was flavorful and creamy. The sliced brisket was tender and had an amazing wood smoke flavor. I'm a pickle girl and the pickles were a little disappointing because they seemed like food service pickles but trust me I would still eat here again. The sandwich didn't even need any pickles because the flavor of the brisket was perfection. We sat at the tables in the middle of the store and I got to look around and really enjoyed the store. I tried a local homemade seltzer, which was delicious as well. I definitely think Henderson & Kane what's the exactly what I was hoping it would be. Just had steak night at H&K, and 5 years ago, I felt like the steak night was pretty solid, and tonight I still feel it is super solid. I appreciated how everything looks almost the same. the only thing I thought that was different was that the bread was thinner than it was before. I would also order medium, because if you order medium well, it's probably going to turn out well done. I actually need to come back for the BBQ! This is a cute neighborhood spot. It's a corner store/coffee shop/bbq joint all rolled into one. The atmosphere is a quaint little general store. We came here on a whim and the bbq was actually really good. The brisket was so damn tender and flavorful. I actually enjoyed this place and would certainly come back. I was in town for a convention and we had worked all day and built up wuite the appetite. I had on my list to get some BBQ while in Houston. I wanted a place that had the meat combo and sides and Killens had many options. I hot the jalapemo link Pork BBQ, and brisket. I also got some potato salad and baked beans. The sausage was the star of my meats. I am somewhat spoiled for pork bbq as my family is from North Carolina so I have eaten at lot of that style over the years. The brisket was my least favorite and I wished I didn't get that. It was really wet and fatty. The sauce was good and the sides both very good. This is a dive BBQ place like eating at a roadside shack and pretty small. We were fortunate to get a table. It is counter service. They do have an extensive market here as well. Okay so I am a huge fan of BBQ. Today was another great day and I was able to eat some brisket that I must say was cooked to perfection. I was introduced to this place by a co-worker and boy am I glad I was. I ordered the ribs and brisket and he ordered the brisket and chicken. I forgot to take pics of my plate because I had dessert first and was in a daze from their Banana Pudding. Let me just say if you are in downtown Houston this is a must try place. The food is phenomenal and the little country store part of the restaurant has something for everyone. The sides were decent, but the barbecue itself really stood out. I was with a group for work so we got plenty of photos. Customer service was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Just note that this is more of a store/pick-up spot than a sit-down restaurant, so don't expect a full dining atmosphere. We came here on our last day of Houston and we truly saved the best for last. Even though we got the food to go, it was one of the best BBQ that we had during the trip, and we hit quite a few places during our stay. The sliced brisket was one of the best, goes so well with the mac n cheese, the middle of so soft it melts in your mouth, combined with the slight crunch of the charred ends, all seasoned with the right amount of peppercorn and salt. I'm getting hungry looking at the pictures again. We also had the coleslaw, and the chopped brisket sandwich. Chopped isn't as good as sliced, it wasn't as soft or juicy or flavorful, but it was still very very good. I honestly can't recommend this spot highly enough. As someone with a gluten allergy, I appreciated that their sauces are gluten free and they were knowledgeable about what I could eat on the menu. The owners are super nice, and most of all unlike that fact that you are eating in the middle of a convenience store! Brisket, turkey, chicken and pulled pork... as much as you want. How have I never heard of Henderson and Kane. What an amazing place. The food is great, and the customer service is top-notch. I'm really shocked that I'm finally finding out about this place. Kudos to move into downtown and shout out to the app too good to go because that's how I found them on that app. Food: the brisket is simply amazing. Blown away. Every bite was top-notch. The spicy Boudin was just as good. I really enjoyed it. The macaroni and cheese is amazing. Every bite was simply the best. How could I leave out the banana pudding. Wow simply amazing. I also got some frozen brisket tamales to go. I cannot wait to keep trying more things off the menu because as of right now I'm blown away. This is some of the best barbecue in Houston. Come to find out the owner used to work with Franklin's back in the day. How cool is that. I was shocked to find out they've been here seven years and here I am barely showing up. I met with friends after work at H&K on a Thursday night. I found this place to be very cool and laid back. I particularly enjoyed the decor and the background music - what a great surprise! The inside looks like a grocery store with station in the back for food. Guy at the register was super friendly and gave me some suggestions on food. I landed on the chicken sandwich with a side of mac cheese. I must say the sandwich was just perfect, the chicken was on point, not dry or with too much seasoning.
