Rare Steakhouse is a two level steakhouse located at Melbourne CBD. The prices are middle of the road compared to other steakhouses I've tried in Melbourne. The service needs a little improvement. I was barely acknowledged as I entered the restaurant before I was directed to go upstairs in an empty floor with about 10-15 tables. We were then assigned to the last table by the wall furthest away as if we were penalized. Remember those days where you had to stand on a corner facing the wall as a kid for timeout! That's what I felt like. The entire place was EMPTY！Service was slow and none of the servers looked like they enjoyed their work. In fact, the server took our order AFTER taking the orders from other customers who came in after us. The steak was tender and was nicely grilled but quality of the steaks was middle of the road. Service and ambience were good. The food was subpar. I started with the salt and pepper calamari which obviously came from a bag of frozen calamari. No imagination or presentation with this plate. Just a plate of breaded calamari that arrived less than 5 minutes after I ordered it. I then ordered the Ribeye. It was chewy and had a lot of gristle in it. Half of the pieces I ate I was gnawing through gristle, just not a good piece of meat for 75 AUD. Was not worth the cost at all. read more

WHY YES MATE!! Had a delightful evening with our party of 8. The steak was cooked to perfection and the martini was sincerely spot on. Sometimes with a large group it can be difficult to accommodate. These guys had no problem keeping up with our group. The food came at the same time and was piping hot with every dish, with the exception of our friends who opted for large salads. The I fillet was very tender and juicy. The porterhouse was perfectly cooked with the right amount of fat around the edges. The scotch fillet was cooked to perfection. The Rib eye almost was too much to eat but somehow I muscled through and one of these I have had. Don't forget the chips with the creamy garlic sauce. The chocolate cake was epic and could be shared. I'm never one that gives very bad reviews but this was a bad good experience. The only reason this restaurant gets two stars is for the service but other than that the food wasn't good. Started with prawns that was cooked in a process sauce that tasted very bland and had no flavor (I know that's the definition of bland but I had too repeat it). The BBQ ribs were tender but either they were overcooked or the grill Hadn't been cleaned because the charred taste was overwhelming and took away from how tender they were. Now the Scottish steak. Had the same charred flavor and I honestly wanted to ask for steak sauce because of how burnt it tasted. Don't know if this was an off night but as a steak eater I am shocked at the high ratings yelp and trip advisor gives this steak house. This was not our original intended destination but I am so glad we ended up here! Dark yet trendy decor, comfy seating, open yet still intimate dining. Service was friendly from the hostess though to our great servers. The menu has a diverse selection to please any picky eater including salads. They have a great fixed price menu for lunch and dinner but read the fine print as it's only available at certain times. We ordered rib steak which comes with your choice of potato and you can order extra sides for an additional cost if you like. Steak was perfectly cooked to order. The baked potato and crisps were both delicious. The crisps were The best I've ever had in a steakhouse, really. They have a great selection of desserts and cheese plates if you have room afterwards. Love this place!!! Every time we go to Melbourne we MAKE time to eat at RARE! The food and drinks never disappoint, and neither does the staff. There was an issue with the booking this time for some reason though. I made it for Saturday night at 8pm, and they called me on Friday night at 7:30pm asking if I was still able to make my booking for that night on Friday. I checked my email booking again, and it was for Saturday at 8. So I told them I'd like to keep my original booking if I could. They are So accommodating and Aria (I think that was her name), and she was able to shift some things around for us. Got there, and everyone was so nice!! Alex was our server, and she was so nice and funny!! Of course the food was amazing as per usual, and she kept coming to check on us, but not in the annoying way. So this was on the must eat list during my short return to Melbourne. And once again, Rare you did not disappoint. I had the t-bone was cooked well, slightly over medium rare but I do understand that the difficulty of cooking with the bone in. Fries were outstanding, really well cooked and crunchy and a decent heaping was provided. My partner had the wagyu been which was the best steak we've have ever had in Melbourne. I would reccomend this to anyone. His mashed potatoes were super creamy and again, a good portion on the side. For dessert we shared the flour less chocolate cake which was served with crumbled biscuit for texture and vanilla ice cream. The cake was rich, moist and so filling, and its a rarity that I'm unable to finish a cake but I could not finish another bite. The wine list is extensive with some great options. Service was prompt, friendly, and I love that you can see into the kitchen from the dining room. I'm keeping it on the list until my next trip back, if you haven't gone yet, go! I went here for dinner and it was a very good steak. I was interested because of the grass fed option for steaks and they had grain fed options too. I had the bone in ribeye cooked med rare and it came out cooked perfectly. I normally eat fillets when having steak and I found the bone in ribeye very tasty. I had the mixed olives starter and my side was a salad. I would call the atmosphere up scale trendy and the service level was what I would expect for this level of restaurant. The steaks are cooked to perfection and let me choose bleu for my eyes fillet. The basting was delicious and the meat tender and juicy. The only thing more succulent than their steaks, is their decadent chocolate lava cake.
