We took it because we had just flown in that morning and couldn't/didn't want to stay out late. Interesting thing is the restaurant was half full the entire time so we didn't understand why there wasn't availability any later. Enough of that, on to the food. Appetizer sampler was ok. Nothing stood out. Calamari, mini sausages, pork belly, bruschetta, salad. Wouldn't order again. Regular and garlic breads for another appetizer. Ok but nothing to make me order again. Lots of meat options and I chose the filet out of preference and suggestion by the waiter. Cooked well but the cut of meat was just ok. Good sized portion and in this case, as it should never be with a good cut of meet, the peppercorn sauce came in handy. Side salad instead of "chips" (fries) which wasn't anything special. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was warm and very inviting. The food was good as well. The burger was phenomenal while the steak was just ok. It was the Aged Rib Eye. Looking around after we realized everyone knew to add salt to their steak. They give you a complementary birthday dessert as well. This is truly a meat place so be ready! Lots of people, including us, had skewers. I had the lamb and they were ok. Some pieces were good, some a bit chewy. My husband had the kangaroo skewer and it was very tender. He really liked it. Meals come with meat and choice of fries or salad. We had salad, quite over dressed. We had been really wanting to try this place out since we saw it had good reviews at a different location (I believe in Perth). We decided to make a reservation and give it a try since we saw there was one here in Melbourne. We walked in and there was a long line of people waiting to be sat. Since we had a reservation we were sat as soon as we walked in. From the minute we sat down the lady that walked us in gave us water right away but then it took another 25 minutes for anyone to walk by and ask if we wanted any starters or other drinks. We ordered drinks and I didn't receive my drink till an hour after being sat down. My husbands drink never came. I asked 3 different employees and they all said they would check on it. The drink arrived until after our dinner. At the beginning they ask if you want your drink with the food or prior to. Apparently our waitress wrote he wanted his with his food and therefore the employees refused to bring it before. We ordered the beef ribs and Wagyu. The Wagyu was the smallest piece of Wagyu we've ever had & not as flavorful as others. The ribs tasted okay but also a bit dry. We also had garlic bread, calamari, Caesar salad and Mac. Overall the food was decent. The service extremely awful and mediocre. Expected better from a steakhouse. Therefore, if you wish to sit around as employees look past you and don't even ask if you need anything then make your way to this steakhouse. Located near the river in Downtown Melbourne is The Meat & Wine Co. they have undergone a million dollar renovation and it looks beautiful. They did a great job with making it feel upscale but welcoming at the same time. They offer several varieties of steaks with different levels of aging. We ordered the Monte cuts aged 120 days and corn finished. I got the ribeye with black garlic butter and my wife got the fillet with blue cheese sauce. Both were perfect temperature and well seasoned. Meat was tender and flavourful. We also ordered the grilled octopus to start which was delicious. Tips: make a reservation as it gets busy and try to come for happy hour between 4-6pm for some great wines, beers and cocktails. read more

My Wife and I came to Melbourne on our honeymoon and this place was a must go for us! We ordered the wagyu beef ribeye, skewered beef, Mac & Cheese (amazing), the Greek salad, and the calamari. The steaks were tasty, the Mac/calamari was great, and the Greek salad came with a HUGE chunk of feta. I just want to add, our waiter was nice but you could tell he might have been new. "The Meat & Wine Co" was the first restaurant that came out the mouth of a local Aussie friend when we sought​ some advice on Melbourne's gourmet. After the experience tonight, I have to say that this place truly earned its reputation as a "Must Go" spot if you ever travel to Melbourne. The items on the menu were overall a bit pricy, but you will certainly find your money well spent. I tried to make a reservation last Saturday morning but were only told both weekend nights were fully booked. Surprised by how popular this spot was, I tried again this morning and was glad to be told that there were several time slots available for dinner. So general​ rule being if you aren't only in town for a weekend, try to come on weekdays when you'll have a much better odds to find a table. Otherwise, you should probably call as early as possible. From the first sight, the exterior of the restaurant was quite inconspicuous with glass door and windows. interior​ wooden decor, on the other hand​, was cozy and welcoming with full racks of wines almost everywhere against the walls. We ordered kangaroo meat skewers, medium rare rib-eye steak, half rack of beef ribs, and a bowl of garden salad​ for share. Had to say that the dishes were all amazingly delicious despite the salad which didn't leave much impression comparing to the others. Kangaroo Skewers: Very first time for me to try Kangaroo meat. The meat on the skewer was cooked medium rare as recommended. I liked the presentation of the dish a lot. A skewer full​ of meat was hung by an iron hook on top of a bed of fried onion strings. Somehow had the feeling of acting as a bunch of cavemen sitting around a bonfire waiting on a feast from the great grassland of Australia. Overall the taste of Kangaroo meat was quite similar to steak but, personally, I felt it was a bit sweeter, leaner, and tenderer. I also found a hint of herb flavor from the meat, not sure if it was from the seasoning or meat itself. My mom, who wasn't exactly a meat lover, also spoke quite highly of the dish. Rib-eye steak: Ordered as medium rare and the meat was cooked to exactly what I expected. Epic taste with ideal tenderness and juiciness. I had the steak with mushroom sauce that came with an additional charge, and I was quite satisfied with every single bite of the meat. Beef Ribs: Hard to admit for someone who's been living in the States for a bit over 5 years, but the ribs here were probably the best ribs I've had so far. The issues with the ribs I had before were primarily around the overly sweet/sour barbecue​ sauce and the greasiness of the meat. Meat & Wine Co definitely did it right from both of these two aspects. The ribs were covered in a right amount of sauce where each bite included a well-balanced smokey flavor from the meat and a sweet/sauce taste from the sauce. In addition, the meat was tender enough that you could easily tear it off the bones with zero efforts. No pure fat lying around the edge of the ribs or grease dripping down from the meat, so if I have the chance to come again I would totally dive into a full rack of the ribs. I believe​ I have already said enough good things about this restaurant. I would recommend Meat & Wine Co to all my friends travel to Melbourne​. read more

Meataliscious! Had the pleasure of eating at one of Melbourne's hottest steakhouse. We arrived at 7 p.m. on a Wednesday evening and the place was packed! Waited upstairs for about 30 mins in the bar area and happily, we get to try different drink concoctions. The menu consists of a lot of steaks of various cuts and types; although prices here are not exactly pocket friendly. I ordered the beef ribs ($49), it was generously sized juicy ribs with a sweet, smoky glazed and also came with those delectable chips/salad. Fall-off-the bone delicious and probably the best beef ribs I've had anywhere! The Meat & Wine Co. is certainly not disappointing in any way, from the beautiful venue (overlooking the waterfront) to the outstanding food and supported with the service and ambiance for days. The Meat & Wine Co, Melbourne is located at Freshwater Place, Queensbridge Square in Southbank and has stunning views of the Yarra River and the city skyline. The steaks are mammoth and delicious. They also specialize in ribs - lamb, beef and pork. Although you could be mistaken for confusing them for Flintstonesesque dinosaur ribs (they are HUGE). For $49, you can give go all out and have a steak and ribs. You even get a massive bib for the massive mess you are about to make. The Meat and Wine Co isn't cheap. I have tried the new yorker, fillet and the rib eye. Overall, it was great food! Dessert I ordered creme brulee for dessert and i loved it!!! Such an outstanding meal! I went here about a year ago on my visit to see the Australian Open. The Monte Black Wagyu Ribeye was aged and cooked to perfection. The chips served with the steak were also perfect. Crispy and fluffy at the same time. Australia in general is probably the best at making chips, and Meat & Wine Co. was probably the place with the best chips I had during my two week stay. And while one might balk at paying $7 for garlic bread, it was amazing and well worth it. While the trip from the US was grueling, if one does go, Meat & Wine Co. should be the first stop to truly experience Australian Wagyu, one of the best steaks in the world. read more

Been wanting to try the Southbank venue as we usually go the Chadstone or Hawthorn East restaurants. Cannot fault the Southbank venue, lovely ambience, fantastic staff, food and drinks excellent. I had a $55 steak which just melted as I sliced into it and the taste and texture was beyond great. My dining companion's go to is the $135 Wagyu which is always great. For starters the tartare and calamari are our go-to dishes, which we cannot fault as the calamari also melts in the mouth. A big nod to the bar staff who mix excellent cocktails (Mojito's and Old Fashioned - recommend this one with Black Label Johnny instead of Bourbon). We will definitely return when I visit from NSW. read more

Actually we were on our way to a food and wine festival/ which turned out to be more of a panel talk than the food feast we were expecting. Decided to go for our occasional Dunch (that's not lunch or dinner but something in between) at 3.30pm instead. Found this place and were really pleased. Fascinating decor and atmosphere. Just loved it! Came here with a large group of hungries (12). Although we didn't have reservation and they were BUSY we got a table in less than a half hour. And in the mean time we were well tended at the upstairs bar. Nice! I had the beef kabob with chips and a peri peri dip. Just outstanding. Cooked perfectly and A LOT of food. A number of folks had the Lamb shank and the feedback was that it was nicely executed as well. It looked gooood too! Great wine selection and oh if you are a vegetarian don't be scared away, they have an assortment of options that folks In our group found very good too. Service was good. 5 years ago, this would have rivalled some Michelin Star restaurants in London. This year however, it is a shadow of its former self and has moved away from its interesting, rustic South African theme towards something resembling a pub kitchen. A primary practical gripe with the place is the wall couch seats, which are so low and sunken that it gives a feeling akin to being a child allowed to sit at an adults table, and is not really conducive to eating large amounts of steak. This said, the ribs I had were quite good, as was the mashed potato. The Mac and cheese was a bit heavy on the truffle oil but greatly impressed others of my party, so your mileage may vary. Service was mediocre though mixed (the different servers could have been working for the Flower Drum and TGI Fridays respectively), but so was much of the experience so it matched well. Epic steak fillet cooked blue just to my liking. Feel free to judge my need for raw mooing meat but when in a place that holds a reputation of good meat why would you make them ruin it by cooking it. Enjoying the steak as a three course mean with vegetable sides to accompany the steak it was hands down a great meal. Much to my surprise they actually catered to lactose free diets and although not on the menu, there is a lactose free desert which blows your mind but you have to request it. I asked on Twitter what the best place in Melbourne was for getting kangaroo, and once an endless army of vegan trolls who apparently comb the internet for anyone talking about eating kangaroo on social media got bored of harassing me, The Meat & Wine Co was the unanimous recommendation for where to go... And I'm super glad I did. Now, I know this might come as a surprise, but a place called The Meat & Wine Co both has really good meat and really good wine. Their wine list is crazy, but I stuck to the cheap stuff and was pretty much blown away by how good their house red was. It paired perfectly with some DELICIOUS KANGAROO. So, the 'roo comes on skewers, with some potatoes, and are really easy to share. We ended up doing a few different skewers, individual entrees (I got a steak) and a whole ton of sides. The mac and cheese was incredible, my steak was cooked perfectly, and the whole experience was great. One silly thing though, and I'll chalk this up to me being a dumb American: When the server asks you if you want sparkling or still water, the correct answer is "table." Back home, sparkling is typically fancy bottled water, and still is just normal tap water. I ordered still and got some ridiculous $9 bottle of water, which, eh, was pretty funny to realize I accidentally ordered the silly water instead of drinking poor people water. He even called and got us reservations for that night. We got there and the place was packed. So we knew that this place would be good. I had kangaroo steak and my wife had a regular cow steak. The food was really good. The atmosphere was a little loud and they tried to maximize the amount of people in the restaurant. But over all the experience was fantastic.
