This is a really unusual review to leave,--however, the situation was a bit unusual. Once a mom,--you're always a mom, no matter the age of your children. As usual, when my son told me he was heading back to Texas after spending two weeks in CO, I did my usual "silent" worrying. When he called me to let me know he was on the side of the road with a blown engine, of course I was worried. I had added him to my AAA membership the night before when he told me he had let his emergency roadside insurance go. Regardless, I thought there was a 7-day waiting period. However, as the morning wore on, I called AAA and they said he was covered immediately with my benefits. That was great,--except they couldn't get anyone to him until 12 AM the following morning. This was definitely NOT good news as my son couldn't leave his truck. He didn't have a whole lot of water or food and I was trying to help him look for places that were near him from my laptop in San Antonio. In desperation, I called Raton Pass Camp to see if anyone there could help get him off the Interstate to their campsite. I still can't believe this part, however, within 1 min of speaking with Rhonda, she said I see your son, I'll pull over and see what I can do to help him. Literally, our conversation didn't last more than 2 minutes and she was pulling over to help my son. I hung up and cried with gratefulness. She was able to arrange for a tow truck to take my son to Amarillo, where he will be able to meet up with his friends who will finish towing him home to SA. A few minutes later, when I talked to my son, HE was crying with gratefulness and he NEVER cries! In a world where too few people care, I'm so very grateful for this place and for people like Rhonda who didn't hesitate to immediately pull over and help. I know I'm repeating myself, however, I still am in a state of amazement at her kindness and helpfulness. If I ever have the opportunity, I will definitely be stopping in! read more

Excellent! The bathhouse with both a wet & dry area in the shower, toilets & washer/dryer were spotless. Our site was flat & easy to access. Quiet location even though we were nearby I25. The restrooms are clean, but there aren't enough stools, sinks & showers for the number of sites. There was no hot water. The cafe is closed. The owner is rude and doesn't follow her own rules. Her dogs are off leash & attack other dogs when they walk by. The sites are extremely close. The internet doesn't work. We felt very unwelcome. Wouldn't stay there again. read more

We LOVE this RV park! The owners and staff are so friendly, helpful and accommodating. We are here for a month and love the cooler weather. It's a bit windy at times but that's expected at an elevation of 7880 ft. WiFi and TV not that great but we manage. The fact that we could get packages delivered here was wonderful. They would even bring them right to our rig. Our site was perfect for us. Plenty of room to drop our side and back decks and have some privacy, too. This park is only 11 miles from Trinidad CO. where we found all the needed amenities for shopping and dining. Trinidad Lake State Park down the hill with fishing, boating, camping. Yes we will definitely stay here again next year. read more

Never left review like this, but never treated so badly! Extremely confrontational owner (Rhonda). I called to ask about New Mexico COVID self quarantine rules put in place on July 1 (yesterday), she completely blew up (she said she had about 35 calls already today). Became belligerent and unilaterally said she was going to cancel our reservations. When I calmly said that's not what I wanted (just wanted information), she said, "Too bad, I have been dealing with this all morning and have others who want to camp here." Tried to talk her "off the cliff" and be reasonable, but she just hung up and left us hanging. Supposedly, she has cancelled our reservations on her own. Based on other reviews on other sites, this lady is very moody and volatile. These are tough times, but she is extremely emotional and not handling it well. She wouldn't answer any call backs, so left a message for her letting her know I understand she's having a bad day , but to please call us back and discuss it responsibly. No response yet. She may be nice normally, but when she has a bad day, you do not want to get caught up in it. Pass on this drama! read more

This place is great! When we checked in, the owner was very nice and immediately asked if I had 4 wheel drive. They had just laid down gravel. I don't have 4 wheel drive so she advised me to drive around the office to pick up speed so the momentum would carry me up the driveway to where the sites are. A little unusual, but fine. After we hooked up and unhitched, we walked around the campground and the immediate area. The campground is about 100 yards from the Colorado border, and we walked over the where the State of Colorado had installed some placards about the history of the area and the Santa Fe trail. We took some silly pictures of us standing with one foot in NM and one foot in CO. Looking to the south is a great view overlooking a valley. My dog was going crazy with the smells, not only he is not used to the forest, we has probably smelling all the different wildlife in the area. We didn't see anything spectacular, but the owner said there are some elk nearby. My dog was winded (as were we) after a brisk walk due to the altitude and he slept great that night. All the hookups worked perfectly and my daughter used the wifi for an online course she was taking and it worked ok. The toilet area/showers were spotless. We would definitely stay there again. read more

Great campground. We stopped here twice on the way to and from Sturgis and Mount Rushmore. Even though we arrived in the middle of the night due to some delays, the host was still very pleasant and got us to our site quickly and easily. Very clean bath house with coin laundry if needed. This was a barely tolerable place to stay when we visited last year for a couple nights. Views are good if you have a spot on one of two sides. Management is shaky at best -- friendly one moment and vindictive the next. When we checked in, she said, I don't know how you got that prime site. Evidently I wasn't the one who took your call." You are told to walk your dogs in a particular area. We have no problem with that. There was a loose dog who pooped in front of our neighbor's RV who were not there so we cleaned it up and took the "lost" dog to management, saying we didn't know who owners were. Management just sneered and accepted the dog. Turns out it was theirs and it runs freely in the campground. We then told management that we would like to check availability to visit again. They said to check back the next morning. We checked back the next morning as requested, and Management/owner dismissively says she needs to water her plants and appoints her camp host to check for us. This lady was barely civil and bitter. We tried a reservation a year later and asked if we could get one of two sites that were easier in and out after a long day's drive. The Management/owner then felt it necessary to say, "I always laugh when people who have only been here once seem to think they know more than I do about the accessibility of the sites." Guess she didn't know that two RVs came within a foot of ours to park when they were pulling into extremely tight spaces when we were there the first time. Needless to say, we decided to stay at the KOA in Raton instead. Will not be staying here again unless ownership changes. read more

Owner was very cordial when registering. She looked at our large rig and changed us to site #2. That was the best site there. Easy to get into and out of. Site was close to level. We stayed for one nite. My wife went back later to the office to ask a question and the owner was very curt in response. All sites are gravel sites and all looked fairly level. Owner doing a lot of work on camp ground along with dressing up the location with many new plants, trees, schrubs, etc. Web site says cafe open till Labor Day. We were there in July on a Thursday but cafe was not open. Owner told us it probably would be open on Friday and the weekend. Wifi and Verizon cell coverage is almost non-existent. Did enjoy the stay but not sure I would stay there again. read more

I was really surprised by the way my family and I were treated by Rhonda. I had made a reservation for tent camping a few days in advance. When we arrived, my husband went inside the office to confirm payment and check us in. He came out with a map, and we drove up the hill to the site we had been assigned. It was an RV spot. I'm not sure why the owners/management thought we would like to camp on rocks between RV's. A bit confused, we decided to consider our other options in the area. On our way to a nearby park, I called the office and spoke with Rhonda. I asked her if there were actual tent sites available. She said yes, there were 2-3, but that she had asked my husband if he wanted water and electric. I told her that was fine, that we just didn't understand that water and electric entailed a RV spot (we were new to the whole RV/tent type stop) and asked her if we could just switch to a tent site. She was a bit short in her tone, letting us know this would be fine, but that my husband specifically asked to be near the bath house and restrooms and that he preferred to be in an RV spot. This exchange was so confusing to both my husband and me. He did not ask for anything in particular because he didn't even know what was available. I was surprised she felt she needed to make up something like this. Needless to say, we decided to forfeit our payment (of course, no refund) and camp somewhere else nearby much more welcoming and scenic. We will not be returning to Raton Pass Camp. read more

Your insinuation that your $800.00 worth of tools stored in a plastic tub in the back of your vehicle would be stolen is preposterous. Our customers nor us have never had a theft in 15 years you obviously hang out in low places to have such fears. You were not ask to vacate you did this as a childish fit. If you truly wanted an explanation of the problem you would have come to the office or called other than the moment you were driving off the lot. I would assume that since you didn't want to listen to either of the three previous discussions of your vehicle placement and your comment "we will pull out before we park over there for 4 days" your request for an explanation of being "asked to leave" which you were not is an part of an elaborate hoax to receive a refund you are not entitled to. I do not have your card info from the second payment but see what I can do by calling Merchant Services. I am glad you left my property on your own free will as you are vile individuals who have no place at my house. I will prepare an additional refund that you are not entitled to in a reasonable amount of time per your request. I do have a signed card that would entitle me to retain all of your rent but I will refund a portion of your money as your tainted money means nothing to me. You will be provided a break down of the accurate refund under a separate correspondence. It is truly people like you that are ruining the RV industry and our country. This RV Park is at the VERY top of the Raton Pass. Our RV blew a radiator hose coming up I-25 from Trinidad, and I had lost all the coolant just as I neared the top of the pass. I parked at the first exit, and called for help. AAA came and helped get the vehicle started again, and while I was trying to figure out what to do next, I called the camp where we had reservations--not knowing for sure where it was or how far. Within minutes the owner of the camp was there, and toting a big jug of water that helped top off the radiator reservoir. It turned out that we were less than 1/2 mi from the RV park, and she told me that I could take my pick of sites...depending on how comfortable I was knowing that I might have to have it towed into RATON (7-8 miles) the next day. I parked in the upper lot...okay a bit tight, but it worked, and the views made it all worth it. I would definitely stay there again because of the CORDIAL RECEPTION AND EXTRAORDINARY HELP that we received, and because of the view, and there was no problem with our small dog. Don't miss it! I'm only sorry that our stay there was cut short because of the RV problems. All in all, it is a clean, pleasant, well kept park. Stayed there in a 28' MH towing a Saturn Vue.
