A solid 4.5 star experience. The atmosphere is attractive "old world German". You feel like you are sitting inside of history. Located on the Marienplatz, there is plenty to see in that area. The food is nicely traditional, and very well prepared. The service was surprisingly fast, and very friendly. Just the decor alone would have been worth the visit, but all of it was a great experience.
A friend and I had an early dinner here, as a break from the Christmas markets. We were promptly seated, though it took a bit too long for our order to be taken. The bottled water we ordered took too long to arrive and the 'starter' dish of breaded Brie arrived the same time as our shared entree, their version of 'fried chicken.' The starter and entree were average in quality. The ambiance was okay, what you would expect for a restaurant in Germany, off a busy square. I don't think I would return, if ever in Munich again.
Ratskellar is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food. It breaks my heart to see that they closed at the beginning of 2026. I'm glad I had the opportunity to dine in this beautiful 150 year old restaurant. My review comes after its closure but it serves to honor the restaurant in hosting my visit. The Building is amazing where the walls and ceilings act as palettes for beautiful painted art. Stepping into the restaurant feel as if one is stepping through a time portal where one feels they are dining 151 years ago which is how old the building is. The ambiance is quite lively and energetic. Although the highlight is the space, the food is also very good. Their pretzels are served warm and fresh with a firm exterior and an interior that melts as it enters one's mouth. The soup is flavorful and healthy with not even a drop of oil pooling to the top. The schnitzel is as tender as it gets. The servers were knowledgeable and fast but it is always so busy that the restaurant should consider increasing staff as to improve customer service. Perfect location right in the heart of Marienplatz where the Glockenspiel is a stone's throw away. Overall, a wonderful restaurant to dine with great food and a beautifully historic setting!
I mean, I know this place is touristic, but the food was pretty decent. The schweinshaxe was quite good. The käsespätzle was pretty decent as was the obatzda. The salad we had was over dressed but I don't come to Germany for a salad (mom in law ordered it). Waiter was very nice and the price was fair given how much of a touristic area we were in.
We were so excited to get reservations to this iconic restaurant, in the middle of Marienplatz in Munich! Ambiance- 10/10!! This place is BEAUTIFUL!! We went to the reservation desk to check in. The gentleman at the desk seemed annoyed we were there, as he was on his cell phone. Barely spoke, told us we were in the wrong place but proceeded to take us to a dirty table that he cleaned off in front of us, put our menus down and walked away without saying another word. Rough start, but the inside of Ratskeller is so cool! Our waiter was nice. He was very busy and seemed rushed, but he was efficient. Took our drink and food orders together. We told him everything we wanted because we thought we might not see him again. We got all the German staples- breadbasket with Obzada cheese and lard spread - not delicious. Not much of taste at all. The Goulash soup was impressive, but wish it had more meat. We shared the Sauerbraten. It was mediocre. The meat was so tender, but the flavor was bland. It was served with red cabbage (it was mushy ) and the potato dumplings were ok. Not much flavor there either. I will say, they give you the option to turn any of their entrees into 'family style' shareable meals for just a few dollars more, which was nice. Overall meh for food. Wow for decor.
Ratskeller has phenomenal reviews on both Google and TripAdvisor. It's a huge restaurant but packed so it's definitely a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time! I started with the white asparagus cream soup with chives garnish. It was delicious and comforting BUT it was missing the most important ingredient in the soup "chunks of white asparagus" as listed on the menu. (I'm obsessed with white asparagus!) I let the waitress know and she was super nice and asked the kitchen to bring me a side of asparagus to add in. Even then, I was hoping for a thicker, creamier soup, but it was pretty watery. For the main, I had the pork knuckle which reminded me a bit of pernil. It wasn't as tender as I expected and was a little dry. Served with red cabbage (heavy on the cranberry sauce, not a fan!) and potato dumplings. I also ordered the white asparagus salad with avocado and corn. It came grilled and fried, definitely preferred the grilled version! Overall, it's a solid restaurant. A few things could've been better, but I'd still say it's worth checking out.
Lovely service. We picked Ratskeller because of its great location in Marienplatz, right in the center of our walking tour and close to the mass transit station. We ordered cappuccino, a dark beer, a light beer, pizza, and the Jägerschnitzel. The beers were enjoyable, and the cappuccino was a nice touch. The schnitzel was hearty with a flavorful mushroom sauce. The pizza actually surprised us -- much better than expected and very good. The vaulted cellar atmosphere added to the charm, and despite the busy crowd, service was attentive and efficient. Overall, Ratskeller was a convenient and enjoyable stop with good food, cozy ambiance, and a perfect location in the heart of Munich.
Ratskeller is a popular German restaurant located underneath the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz. They have an extremely large seating area. Chicken schnitzel (€13= $14.50 USD) - This consisted of 2 small chicken breast pieces battered and fried. In terms of flavor this was plain, but at least it was crispy. The chicken could have been more tender. Apple studel (€10.50= $11.50 USD) - Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this was on the smaller side, but the filling tasted great as it was slightly tart with a bit of sweetness. The crust wasn't too crispy, but still good. Water (.75 L) = (€6.75= $7.50 USD) - This was a total rip off, had I known the price of water here, I would have just filled up a refillable bottle just outside from one of the local water fountains. Overall this place is a tourist trap and prices are on the high side. Yes, you will find all the popular German delicacies here and this restaurant is on many tourists places to visit.
Very cool ambiance. Located in a basement. Very large restaurant but set up makes it feel a lot smaller. Service was relatively quick and friendly. Food was very good. We had two of their soups and they were both excellent. The jagerschnitzel and Munich wollwurst were outstanding. Totally recommend coming here if visiting Munich.
What an amazing outdoor dining experience! We passed through here walking around the city and decided to arrange our dinner plans entirely around returning. We ordered the caesar salad (without anchovies), crisp baked Brie soft cheese, Munich rostbratwurstl, and the wirsthaus bratwurst. The salad was a very large with super creamy dressing! The Brie bites were really tasty, especially with the sauce provided. The Munich rostbratwurstl was also really good, particularly with the sauerkraut and shredded horseradish. Unfortunately, we never received the wirsthaus bratwurst (nor did we pay for it), but perhaps it was good we didn't as the salad was particularly filling on its own.
While in Marienplatz, we stopped in Ratskeller for lunch. We were seated immediately and the service was very friendly. We had some beer and I had a special from their seasonal asparagus menu: fried potato cake with sautéed white and green asparagus, spinach, and tomatoes, topped with a fried egg. The potato cake was so crispy and the veggies were tender but still had bite, and the fried egg yolk broke perfectly over top. It was so tasty! We then had Black Forest cake for dessert, which was really good, with the cherries adding tartness to the sweet cake. A great choice when in the area with ample seating, a very friendly staff, and fun decor!
On the mention of getting a traditional Bavarian meal while attending a Lab Automators event in Munich, one of the attendees mentioned a famous place under the city chambers in the historic Munich Old Town centre of Marienplatz. Gorgeous, spacious and with medivalesque interiors like most bavarian food halls, Ratskeller had the added luxury of very prompt, attentive servers. The Ratskeller potato soup was divine along with the crisp, accompanying pretzel. The scheinhaxe was just delicious, topped off with Bavarian potatoes and the novel touch of red sauerkraut, which was slightly sweeter in complementing the tastes. The finale came with the Bayerischer Apfelstrudel, presented as opulently as it tasted. This lovely venue is highly recommended as part of a visitor's experience in Munich and to get both a historic and tasty culinary experience.
Cool restaurant under St. Peter's. We were able to walk in for a late lunch. If you'd like to come, highly recommend reservations. Food was great and there have smaller portion options if you are not that hungry. They were the perfect size to save room for dessert. I had the Wiener schnitzel with fries and you must end the me with apple strudel.
On the recommendation of a friend, we made reservations at Ratskeller Munich on the first night of our vacation. And what a way to kick off our trip!! The restaurant is tucked away at the bottom of a staircase in a very cool cellar like venue. Dimly lit but warm and inviting, we were greeted by the hostess who help us find our table that had our reservation marker on the table. Our waiter was really nice and we had a great conversation throughout the night with him. We ordered drinks while we combed through the menu (English version) We ordered our entrees which were absolutely scrumptious!!! And because we were on vacation we got dessert. The apple strudel is a MUST!! You need to really consider making a reservation and dining at the Ratskeller. It is worth the planning!!! read more

You may come for the food, it really we came for the ambiance. This is right in the center of Marienplatz, so right in the middle of everything. You take some stairs and go down to basement level for the restaurant. There was no wait for a table for three, but probably because it was fairly early. Though the place was pretty full, and there was live music. They had live music and several sizes of beer to choose from, depending on your appetite. I opted to stay lady like for this visit and had a small glass while my husband and his friend opted for the big as your head steins. The menu is your normal German food, brats, schnitzel, potatoes and lots of beer. All our food came out hot and in good portions. Our server was pleasant, friendly and attentive. This is a good place to start if it's your first time in the Marienplatz area. read more
Food was good. The veal schnitzel was very good as was the dessert. Our appetizer was the Crisp Brie. It was good but not worth the price in my opinion. Service was good as well. Our server was super nice but very forgetful. He brought the wrong drink after first forgetting the drink altogether, the first time around. Ambiance was very nice. It felt like eating in a cellar (thus the name). You're paying for the experience in my opinion more than the food. Overall, it was a nice dinner and I would come again on my next trip to Munich read more

We came during the Christmas Markets, so there was a bit of a line, but totally worth the wait. They take reservations online, so I would recommend trying to get one. The underground restaurant is beautiful lying decorated. The server was very friendly and gave us menus with a pictures! Everything looked good, so we ordered a number of items family style. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the sauerbraten specialty. It was delicious.. But the potato really took the cake. It was flavorful and had a almost dumpling texture. Amazing read more

Pork knuckle was amazing! The skin was so crunchy-crispy, and the meat was very tender and fall-apart moist. The accompanying potato dumplings were great, but I didn't like the red cabbage much. Spargel skandinavisch(?) special dish was delicious too; it was refreshing and light, compared to all the other heavy dishes we got. The accompanying potato pancakes were great, and the sauerkraut was actually not too bad (USA sauerkraut is so bad!). Bavarian Heaven (with crispy pork belly and meatloaf) was delicious as well. The pork belly was tender, fatty, and moist, and the skin was very crispy. The meatloaf (made of pork) particularly impressed me; it's normally not very exciting in flavor for me, but this one was really flavorful. Jagerschnitzel was good but didn't stand out to me. read more

LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT EASTER BRUNCH BACK IN 2012 IT WAS THE BRUNCH BUFFET OF MY DREAMS so, as an american, a brunch buffet is usually like you get your eggs and pancakes and mimosa and you call it a day...so that's what we did and asked the waiter for the check and he's like hey, don't you wanna wait until the next course?? and we're confused, because, ya know, america, so we stay for the next course and we ask the waiter again for the check and he's like hold up, there's MORE and they bring out the last course aka desserts i gotta tell you, every single thing brought everything in america to shame - and on top of it, every plate was complete with a personal chocolate bunny AND they had a guy in an easter bunny costume walking around ... american brunches are forever lackluster in comparison - if i ever get the chance to go back to germany, i sure as hell am coming back here read more

Such a beautiful and cool place to eat at in Munich. Highly recommend it in addition to the Hoffbrauhaus. Prices are reasonable for the service and quality you get. Great place if the weather is crummy outside. read more

In search of a nice, German restaurant, we happened upon this wonderful place and were so glad we chose to dine here. The ambiance is so cozy and elegant and we were delighted to have a quiet meal in a beautiful establishment. The table setting was elegant. The flower was a nice touch. I even snagged some of the coasters as souvenirs :) We started with the German potato soup and by far this was my favorite potato soup I've had. The broth was lighter than American potato soups but it was so much more flavorful. Without all the extra cheese to weigh it down, the bacon and potatoes became the highlight. We ordered the chicken salad and it came with a full garden... complete with flowers! it was so refreshing not having a mouthful of iceberg every bite. The chicken was savory and went very nicely with the light dressing. We also ordered the bratwurst "sampler" with mashed potatoes. I don't know all the names of each of them but they were all delicious... especially the spicy ones!! The glass of wine was especially nice (I'm not a wine guy so we shared the glass) Overall, between the atmosphere, service, food quality and food quantity, this was a wonderful experience! This place was very disappointing. The food was mediocre and the service was rude. We ordered the potato pancake starter. It came with the meal. The special white asparagus was not trimmed at all, therefore hard to eat, and it came with something they called hollandaise, but it was lumpy mayonnaise. The schnitzel was also subpar. Have to say, don't recommend visiting even though I know it's famous. read more

Had two wonderful meals at the Ratskeller while making a short visit to Munich. You really can't go wrong here. The dining room is massive, so I was seated right away. Service is excellent, and the food is hearty and delicious. After two days of sausages here and elsewhere, I opted for a soup and salad for dinner on my last evening. It was wonderful. read more

Delicious upscale place to enjoy lunch or dinner. Our waiter was friendly and very accommodating. We had the Oktoberfest menu item of roast chicken--simply delicious! We had the appetizer trio which was delicious and a bread basket with pretzels!! Wish we had a ratskeller at home in the U. S.!!! read more

Well. I don't know. My appetizers were good but I couldn't tell you about my entree because I have yet to order it. Our waiter totally abandoned us. Very disappointing they aren't even that full. Good food. Crappy service. To be honest probably the worst meal since I've been in Munich. They must pay for their yelp reviews. The food is mediocre and the service is awful. There are far better places to eat in Marienplatz... read more

Loved the cute room we dined in. Felt cozy and like home. Since I'm not a big meat eater, this time I went with the mushrooms. Oh my goodness they were soooooo good. It was served with spatzle, and how can you go wrong with buttery spatzle and creamy mushrooms. I also had the potato soup, the best potato soup I've ever had. Creamy, full of smokey bacon flavor. Not a drop left in the bowl, it was that good. This is a must have dish. Delicious, if I'm in Munich again, I'll be back. read more
Authentic German Food! This place is the legit real deal! It has a super Bavarian feel & decor to it. The food was amazing! Generally, I feel German food can be a bit salty but this place was on point! I have the 1/2 Roasted chicken (very famous during Oktoberfest) & the potato salad that I am now obsessed with lol if you're ever in Marienplatz, stop by this place. Excellent German food right in the Marienplatz square. We walked in without a reservation and were seated right away, the restaurant is enormous. I was worried it might be a little touristy but it really didn't feel that way once inside. The potato soup, pretzel and Wiener schnitzel were all delicious on a cold day. read more
Cool location at Marienplatz and authentic German food. We were wandering around Marienplatz and needed food. It was really by chance we found this place, despite its popularity we weren't really looking for it. It is a really cool building just brimming with history. It is basically like eating in an old cellar. The ornate ceilings and fun German sayings on the ceiling really add the charm. I found the service to be great and the staff helpful. The food was authentically good German. Nothing crazy or unique here but this is a very traditional place anyway. We got a little bit of everything and liked it all. If in the area it's a cool place, not the best food in Munich but a very cool location! read more
