We arrived without a reservation on Christmas Eve afternoon. They graciously gave us a table that we shared with another patron. Hubby had the weisswurst, a weissbier and pretzels. He said the weisswurst was tasty and a little less chewy than others he has had. The pretzels seemed to be fresh out of the oven. The weissbier was refreshing and paired perfectly with this traditional meal. I had a bowl of beef bouillon that was so flavorful. The place is so cozy and the service was very prompt and friendly. My husband and I were seeking a nicer German dinner after a full day of tours and shopping in the rain. We were thankful for having had a reservation as it was quite busy on Saturday night. The interior exuded warmth with wooden decorations and dimmed lighting. Our waiter spoke English and helped us decide by providing us with recommendations. Given that it's Spatenhaus bierhause, we of course had to get a beer and I got a glass of white German wine. We ordered the Bavarian Cordon Bleu and Schnitzel as our mains. The Schnitzel came with a side salad and fried potatoes and the Cordon Bleu came with potato salad and cranberry sauce. The schnitzel was tender, not chewy and perfectly crispy! The Bavarian Cordon Bleu had almost no filling of cheese and ham and ended up tasting like it was just a friend chicken breast. The cranberry sauce wasn't as flavorful as I anticipated either and was quite disappointed with my plate. For dessert we ordered the panna cotta with berries, this was amazing! Outside seating at night in September is always nice when visiting Munich. The service was spot-on for our large group with 4 tables of 4. The food was traditional, authentic, and delicious. Of the big Brauhaus (brewery houses)( this is my go to and I would say the most German of them. Lovely outside seating but during the winter Inside is great too. Kind of the Anti-Hofbrau Haus. Great food for all (even vegetarians and of course Spatan Beer which of course is probably the big draw. If you speak some German, get the German menu as some of the translations are kind of odd, like in most places. read more

We are visiting friends and one of them suggested Spatenhaus since we were staying close to the central station. The duck with potato dumplings was good. So was the brat plate. Spautenhaus has a convenient location near the high end shopping area and a short walk to the Munich Christmas Market with a bright exterior and roomy interior. If you want to eat something else besides traditional Bavarian food, you can get it here such as the grilled cod fish with quinoa and salad along with all of the traditional sausages, pork dishes and of course Spauten beers. Service was excellent for Munich as our waitress spoke English with attentive service that actually deserved a tip. Restaurants in tourist areas such as the Marienplatz will often ask for a tip even though their service is extremely slow and inattentive. It is customary to round up the total and don't feel obligated to tip 10-20% as there is already a 19% tax unless you get tip worthy service. TIP: Go for an earlier dinner before 7pm to get a walk in table or make reservations ahead of time. read more

It's interesting to read the reviews (a lot of people seem to find things to gripe about). My daughter and I ate here our last night in Germany. We were in Germany two weeks and had eaten a lot of great food. Spatenhaus was one of the top 2, hands down. We ate upstairs with a view of the opera -- really great atmosphere and vibe. Our server was great. My daughter doesn't speak German, and he had no problems conversing in English. His recommendations were spot on and appreciated. In terms of food, we were a bit surprised to see oysters and carpaccio for appetizers. The oysters were very fresh and we both enjoyed them. The carpaccio was also a treat and a nice change of pace. The entree was a suckling pig dish. I had tried this several times over the two weeks, and Spatenhaus' was the best. All in all we couldn't have been happier about eating here for our last night in Germany, and we highly recommend upstairs by the window if you can get it :-) read more

A rustic-style, beautifully decorated restaurant! Located in close proximity to the Munich Residence, my friends and I decided to have a late lunch here. I ordered the German meatloaf, Leberkäse, and it was delicious! The potatoes on the side were extra crispy, cut almost like hash browns. Soooo good! For dessert, we had the apple fritters with raspberry coulis - the perfect sweet treat! The warm fritters paired perfectly with the cold vanilla bean ice cream. I also tried the green hot tea. This place was recommended as a traditional Bavarian restaurant and it fit the bill perfectly. We were seated in an elegant upstairs dining room with a fantastic view of the square and Opera building. Our server was wonderful and ever so professional and efficient. He was very helpful in ordering. When no small side salad seemed apparent on the menu he said they would gladly prepare one. The menu is extensive of traditional items. A bread basket of truly wonderful breads and pretzels was quickly delivered after we got beer to start. I ordered a traditional Bavarian dish (Tafelspitz) of very thinly sliced beef, and accompanied with pieces of carrot and potato that were also shaved on top with shavings of a mild horseradish. It came in a low bowl in a light broth and herbs. Delicious! The side was a marinated spinach that was very flavorful, and the side salad was so fresh with greens, tomatoes and onion, nicely dressed. Two of my dinner companions had a pork dish, schweinbraten, that came with a side of sauerkraut. I tried a bit of the sauerkraut. Now I have eaten sauerkraut forever, but this was the best tasting I ever ate, and very fresh. Overall an excellent memorable meal. I was quite full and the prices were not bad. GO! read more

This restaurant has a white tablecloth seating area upstairs and simpler Wirtshaus seating downstairs. The dishes served differ a bit, but the ones served in both areas are pricier upstairs. Which is not to say that the food is good value downstairs; the opera location obviously allows charging a premium. Came here because I read somewhere that their Kaiserschmarrn was very good, but it is just average when compared to local, admittedly high, benchmarks. Wirtshaus food I saw on other tables wouldn't entice me to return, at those opera prices. Oh, and do know that Spaten beer is a relatively harsh taste, considered among the weakest of the original Munich-style beers. Maybe that's why they highlight their beer as the oldest rather than best beer in their advertising. read more

Although the food was good, the people who answer the phone are rude. They also ended up reserving us on the wrong floor even though my open table reservation was clear which floor we wanted. Unfortunately, our server spoke no English and when we tried to find another server who we could communicate with, we were chastised! I am unable to eat gluten, and even though I marked it on my reservation, I couldn't communicate this to our server at all. Spatenhaus's upper restaurant is an Institution in Munich favoured by the locals. The dining room is elegant and upscale with white linen tablecloths and fresh flowers on the tables with a great view of Marienplatz. At the same time it has a calm relaxed feeling to it. The Weiner Schnitzel is delicious and without a doubt the best in town; the new potatoes (either boiled or pan roasted) are amazing and the fresh baked bread mouth watering. The bread basket is an additional charge but it is well worth it. It is served with a garlic whipped mild cheese and or butter and is delicious. Before coming to Munich my mom insisted that I eat some Wiener schnitzel for her. I've never had it before so I googled the best Wiener schnitzel in Munich, which recommended Spatenhaus. Man am I glad I went. That was quite possibly the best meal I have ever eaten in my life. The breading was crunchy and super light. The meat was very tender. The upstairs (white tablecloth dining room) is apparently more relaxed than the crowded and casual downstairs. I had the Bavarian platter which included an insane amount of meat. I shocked and amazed my colleagues when I actually finished the entire thing. I wouldn't recommend this entree unless you're prepared to fight back a 2 hour food coma :). The duck, pork, and sausages were all quite tasty. I was disappointed with my pre-main course pretzel which was a bit tough/stale. The dark beer served was very tasty. Stuffy, snobby... this place is definitely nicht für mich. I felt like Ace Ventura in the mansion party scene with the Monopoly guy. I think this place is meant more for the geriatric opera crowd or the grandmas and grandpas touring the city center, because our group of 4 was the youngest by about 100 years (swear.to.god... I saw the crypt keeper here). But after looking at the menu it kind of makes sense. It was all that crazy carb-heavy, brown, beige, white gravy heavy foods that my grandma loves... because , well, she's old and her taste-buds are probably dead already. I, on the other hand, am clinging to youth for dear life and can't afford to eat that way in my condition (which isn't so much a condition as it is more of my not being able to afford a new wardrobe of pantalones if I get any fatter). I was turned off as soon as we walked in here when went to head into the dining room and a bitter elderly woman with a yappy little purebred dog (allowed inside the main restaurant dining room) stood up and knowingly pushed her chair into our pathway. Then proceeded to call one of the male servers over with her fur coat and ordered him to put it on her... while the four in my group all waited, huddles and backed into a corner. Her entire old biddy group looked on while even her little dog had more room (and respect than us). When we finally broke through, we were sat at an enormous square table that could have easily fit 12 people, only they took away the other chairs so we all had seats at the far opposite sides of the table, unable to even communicate with each other. What a great meal this should be, right? We asked to sit at one of 60 other open tables that were smaller in the dining room, but were told those were saved. ALL OF THEM. Really? Whatever. Fine. We perused the menu and I not only couldn't find a single thing on the menu that I felt shouldn't come with a side of Lipitor, but we couldn't order even if we'd wanted to. We sat and sat and sat and sat. No drinks, not even water, no bread, no nothing. We tried to flag down servers who continued to tend to the other tables and even go and start new tables who had just walked in and been sat (in the tables that we were told we saved). Some of the servers would ignore us completely, some would bump into our chairs and say nothing as they passed, and others would make a motion like they knew we were waiting and that they'd be right over, but none ever came back. We waited 25 minutes before we ended up packing up our coats, hats, gloves, etc and deciding to leave. As we got up to leave it was obvious that every one of the staff members noticed us and seemed relieved. It was so weird... mainly because in America, old people tables are known for being some of the most work and the worst tippers, while a table of young, bright whippersnappers like ourselves would be a pretty hot commodity. Not here, apparently. The first and only verbal contact we had with a server was when I left my hat at the table, and a server found it and tossed it over to me on my way out the door... which was funny because they literally rushed to the table once we left to clear our menus and set the chairs back up but couldn't have cared less about coming over during the nearly 30 minutes we sat with nothing. Let the record show that I do normally respect my elders, but that I also ask for a just a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t in return as well. Here, there was none of that. I have no doubt that they deliberately treated us poorly, whether it was because we were young, weren't wearing stuffy turtlenecks or mink stoles, or maybe because we're American, and for whichever reason(s) it was, I can only recommend this place to as a decent hang if you're a classic board game icon, hoity-toity biotch, and/or wicked witch of the west... who all already appear to be regulars here. read more

Great food, excellent service and weissbier served nice and cold. I was recommended this place by one of the ladies in the office and we had a team dinner here and everyone enjoyed it. The duck or otherwise called bauerente was absolutely divine and the kartofflekanodle was stodgy and delicious. The portions were big and I could not finish it all. Will defenitely come back here and the staff are so friendly and excellent. Although most sites list this as a 5 star restaurant, it is quite ordinary. The view of the square & opera house is nice, the menu so-so, the service is good. Thinking that we were going to a 5 star restaurant, we dressed up only to find folks in jeans & t shirts dining with us. There is also much confusion re: reservations. I reserved on Open Table, thinking that I reserved for the more elegant upstairs. The downstairs people said my reservation was for upstairs, the upstairs people claimed that my reservation was for downstairs, but they would accommodate us. I doubt that downstairs would require a reservation. read more
