This is not a place to hang out for any length of time, unless you get off on saying "...'scuse me". The smaller airlines (Smokey Bay) will drop you off on the other side, about 1.5 miles from the main airport. Be prepared to walk or use one of Homer's overpriced taxis.

People come to Homer, Alaska, for a lot of reasons -- to hike, try their luck at fishing or just to…read moreexplore the quaint town full of art galleries and gift shops. But Homer is also an excellent launching pad for bear viewing in nearby Katmai National Park. There is so much of Alaska to explore -- however, as soon as I saw it was prime bear viewing season (stretching roughly from June through the end of August), I knew that we had to make a stop in Homer. We ended up visiting the first weekend in September, which is technically towards the end of bear viewing season. But clearly, the bears didn't get the memo. In total, we saw more than 20 bears on the trip! When you're getting this close to wild animals (we're talking bears weighing over 1,000 pounds!), finding the right tour company is essential. I mean, we are adventurous but we're not crazy! After researching nearly every tour operator in Homer, there was no doubt in my mind that we'd go with Smokey Bay Air. And I'm so glad that we did -- they went above and beyond our expectations. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And well worth the journey. And best of all? The trip will get you back early enough to head back into Homer to explore the shops and grab a coffee. After all, we were exhausted! We're not used to waking up this early!

The lodge's expert cook Randy transformed that day's catch into a first-class, mouth-watering meal that quickly converted the non-fish eaters into seafood lovers. Evenings were spent in the lodge by the campfire rehashing our day's adventures. We watched majestic sunsets over the bay that lasted a full hour. Our host Joe was a talented storyteller and shared fascinating tales from his time in Alaska. Our cabin was a short walk from the lodge. The newly remodeled cabin was picture perfect with comfortable beds and hot showers. We could hear the waves lap at the shore outside our door as we fell asleep. We went to the glacier first thing and saw mountain goats and spectacular glacial views. It was absolutely breath taking! Eric provided excellent commentary throughout - telling us about the natural history, geography and events that shaped the area. When we stopped back in Homer to refuel his wife Kirsten joined us to see bears and she was such a pleasure, adding even more interesting bear facts! She helped us to spot some moose and some super cool bear dens. We got to see a lot of bears in lake Clark national park and had plenty of time to take stunning pictures. Eric went out of his way to accommodate our desires and we were able to skip the volcano (very cloudy today) and go to another spot for more excellent bear viewing! The scenery was breathtaking the whole day but the last spot was truly stunning! It will be something we will remember for the rest of our lives!
