This week a different crew came to replace some insulation and to install a "critter guard" to keep animals out from under our panels. When they left, the price of the work was more than 40% higher than what was in the written, itemized estimate. I spoke with Joel, the owner. He told me that the cost of a both the service call and labor had increased, but no explanation was provided for the failure to update the quote. The main increase in the invoice came from the labor time, which was nearly twice what was originally quoted. I asked if the crew was inexperienced so it took them longer, and he told me that he had sent an experienced team who knew what they were doing. They had called him during the work, however, to report that they were slipping on the roofing shingles, so it took nearly twice the usual time to finish the job. They had even tried to use some kind of a safety harness, but it failed to solve the problem. I told Joel that it would have been appropriate for the workers to tell the client that they were not feeling safe on the roof before the work was begun. I never would have allowed anyone to continue working on a roof they claimed was dangerous. Joel then told me this was an inexperienced crew who were unable to assess conditions on the roof until they were well into the job, and at that point, they couldn't really stop working. In sum, I was told that the crew was experienced enough to work efficiently, but they took four hours to complete the job. I was then told they were so inexperienced that they spent those four hours slipping and sliding around on our roof, but we heard no sounds of this inside the house, and nobody informed us there was a problem until it was time to pay. I was told that American Solar decided, without informing us, the homeowners, that they would continue installing materials on a roof that their workers had reported was unsafe. Even setting aside the contradictory statements, we find it difficult to believe that an established company would disregard both safety and liability in this manner. No offer was made to honor the quoted pricing. No offer was made to honor the quoted labor cost. I was simply thanked for my "feedback" and told that "this is why it's called an estimate." We were charged $1200 for 30 feet of insulation and wire guards to keep squirrels from nesting under two solar panels. We paid the invoice in full, an expensive lesson learned. We will use another company for any future needs.

Prior to signing off on this quote I question that someone should come back to assess the estimate again and I was told that it would not be necessary. Thereafter, I signed off on the contract for the quoted price of $3,850.00. There was concrete that had to be broken up to have the shower installed which was done. Digging started and my wife was informed that they had to build a wall. I was not home at the time this wall issue was addressed. My wife called me and informed me of the wall that was needed. I gave the ok to let them add a wall. Later that evening I was shocked to hear that a 5' wall was an extra $400 that was not in the original quote. Donnie stated that he didn't realize that there was no wall present when he did the estimate. Had the work not started I would have cancelled the work because the price was not what was agreed on. This was very disappointing to see the price increase this dramatically. I arrived home after work, and I was shocked to see that the wall for the shower was actually in the doorway. Now the bathroom entry door only opens half way so we have to enter sideway. Towards the end of the job Donnie stated that they could install another door to open outward or move the doorway. I did not agree to the additional work because the extra charge for the wall was snuck in. The shower was installed and works fine. The job is now complete and I was informed that I would not be charged for the toilet valve that they broke. In my opinion this obligation was not met, and under duress I paid the extra $400.

I don't consider it professional not to call back when you say you will call back, but unfortunately too many contractors are good, efficient, but not professional business people. After receiving an estimate from Barry and even asking him what worst case scenario is he failed to come on site and provide an accurate estimate. As a result of this failure when Barry came to do the job he decided not to do some of the work and ran away from the project. The issue with this is we had just signed a contract with the sellers based off Barry's estimate that we would fix all the electrical issues. Now we are stuck trying to find an electrician who will do the work. My advice to anyone hiring this company would be to force him to come on site and give an in home estimate instead of taking his word for it. Personally I will never recommend this company again.

After doing some research, I decided to call S&S Electric to get a quote. I spoke with Larry. While the price for the generator that he quoted me was higher than the retailers, he included delivery and setting the generator on our existing pad. While I might have been able to do that myself, if I had an issue with it or dropped it, I could be out a lot of money and effort, so we went with S&S. When the generator arrived, Larry delivered it promptly, set it up and began installation on it. Once he did most of his work, I had to wait for the gas company to hook it to my propane tank. Once that was done, we set up a time to complete the installation. Before the date for the installation, Larry came out on one of the coldest days of the year on a weekend to complete the installation because of an impending snow storm. He wanted to make sure that, if we lost power, our new generator would take over and we'd still have lights and heat. All of the work was done to a high standard, along with being done promptly and neatly. If you need a generator installed, go with S&S. They have a lot of experience in generator installation, so you know it will be done right. It's a great company with even nicer people.
