The menu is simple and perfect, a choice of a 6 course or 8 course tasting menu; with a wine pairing option. They will happily alter to suite vegetarians etc. Everything we had, from a light broad bean and mint velouté soup, 20 minute sugar/salt cured fresh mackerel blow touched to crisp the skin, local beef and two deserts was outstanding. The staff were very professional, knowledgable and helpful. Decor is modern, clean and very attractive. There is absolutely nothing I can say negative about this place. Apparently others feel the same way, it is becoming extremely difficult to get a reservation. Interestingly the kitchen is open and a hive of activity. Steven Edwards (an award winning British chef) and his team clearly know what they are doing and are not afraid to experiment and surprise. For example; bread is a light, warmed brioche bun with a glossy Marmite glaze. Absolutely stunning, especially considering I do not like Marmite! My wife, daughter and me spent a very enjoyable 3 hours dinning at Etch and left very happy and pleasantly surprised. The 8 course tasting menu is not over indulgent, just right for anyone with a normal appetite. You may have noticed all my reviews to date on Yelp have been 5 star, this is deliberate. Life is too short to focus on that which does not make us happy. This is why I restrict my reviews to those things/places that make me happy and appreciate life. Food is OK but expensive compared to other similar venues locally - the food is the same as the other pubs in this small, local chain. Not sure this is a good thing as, surely, most people choose a venue on it's food and this takes away that choice... They do offer a Dining Club discount on food (must include a main course) of 10% - this is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 'a steak for a tenner' deal on Thursdays. The whole pub is undergoing refurbishment in early 2024 inside and out which is great news as it was looking a bit tired when we last visited. Better weather sees the use of the large field for parking and al-fresco dining which proves very popular, especially at weekends as the pub is located in the South Downs National Park and is just a (steep) walk from the South Downs Way.

We ordered a broccoli and goats cheese dish for starter - it was sensational, also a wood pigeon dish which was cooked and seasoned very well. For mains we had a mackerel rillette and a steak with fries. The steak had perfectly rendered fat which was properly flamed, this gave it a nice crispy texture. Most places don't get this right. I'd most definitely return to this venue and am disappointed in myself for taking so long to visit - shame on me!

The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

I got the duck leg confit with citrus sauce and my friend got St. Austell's Tribute Steak and Ale pie. The duck was delicious. Perfectly cooked, sauce went well with it. The Dauphinoise potato, I wanted more so badly. My plate was cleaned except for the bones. The steak and ale pie was not bad, my friend enjoyed it. We finished dinner off with their pistachio soufflé. I asked what was recommended for dessert, never had a pistachio soufflé before, and it was rich and sweet. Offset by the chocolate ice cream, which had a slight bitterness to it. Perfect combination. The table next to us got the chateaubriand for two. That looked amazing and had my mouth watering. If I'm ever back in the area, I do plan on making another trip hopefully.

They brought some water and offered biscuits to our dog (always a winner). Food was excellent. The beetroot and burrata salad was particularly tasty and beautifully presented. Potted shrimp was also very tasty. It gets 4 rather than 5 because it is a little expensive. Worth it but still a bit pricey for a pub. We would definitely return if we were in the area as there were a lot of delectable sounding items on the menu.

I booked a reservation for 2 for this past Valentine's Day about a month in advance, and we were not disappointed! The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and dimly-lit, which was incredibly romantic. We sat at a high table near the bar at the entrance of the restaurant but still felt like we had a tremendous amount of privacy. Our waitress was pleasant, attentive, and explained the menu well. And, OH! The food. We ordered ham croquettes, the Devon crab, the gnocchi with lobster cream, aged beef, and the burrata, finishing our dinner off with the cheese plate. The crab was the highlight of the meal, creamy and delicious, fresh and light. We cleaned our plates after each dish, which were smaller than your average portion size but perfect to share between 2 people. The prices were a bit steep, but the quality and presentation of each dish were so worth it. Naughty Piglets was the perfect place to splash out for a special occasion and enjoy share-able plates of fresh, taste-bud-tingling food. Each dish was complex and delicious enough to have us wanting more, until our next plate was delivered! I would recommend booking in advance if you'd like a prime table or a later dinner time, especially on a weekend, and booking for a party of 2 specifically. The menu seems designed for that (as our waitress explained) and it makes the experience that much more intimate.
