I said I had insurance that was previously accepted before - Adventist Health, from my parents who are healthcare workers in one of their hospitals - but it's an uncommon one in this area, so I expected it to have push back- as it tends to. However, the woman at front desk at the time was so adamant that I had MediCal or MediCare, and she would not listen to me when I tried to explain that it wasn't either of those things. It was just an insurance that isn't based in SoCal, but this clinic had previously accepted it, so I was deeply confused and bewildered. I got turned away immediately, and I had no chance to properly figure out what was going on. This isn't entirely about the care quality, because the few times I DID get accepted into care before this instance were good, and the doctors were kind, helpful, and descriptive. (A bit curt, but they are a busy clinic). However, I wish the front desk person handled the situation differently and explained it more kindly. It was nervewracking and very embarrassing. It is already difficult getting healthcare in San Diego due to my insurance, but it was even more confusing when this clinic suddenly didn't take it any more, then the front desk person kept saying I had a whole different insurance when I did not. Luckily, I went to a Concentra location in Kearny Mesa area, and they ended up taking the insurance, and I got tested properly for strep and flu. I really respect healthcare workers and I understand that things get very hectic, especially when there's a lot of customers and these workers have long and stressful hours. I just wish I was given that same level of respect in the moment, and I hope no other customer has to experience similar things.

One of my first thoughts after meeting Dr. Basha was, finally I'm going to get real health care! I…read moregot more than I bargained for! I was impressed with him from the start. I initially came to him for a thermogram and he began treating me for my vision in mid-April of 2018. I was born, for all intents and purposes, totally blind. I had some light and shadow perception; and once in a while, the slightest bit of color perception. Doctors made shots in the dark (no pun intended) as to the cause of my blindness, but could never pinpoint specifics, other than that I had some rare genetic eye condition that no one else in my family has. Most of my life, I was told "there are many medical advances and I'm sure we'll have something for you in ten years or so." Well, thirty years have come and gone since first I heard this line. Dr. Basha admitted he has never treated anyone with blindness as severe as mine, but was willing to try treatments with me. He said he has been able to help patients improve in their vision up to ten-to-fifteen percent. To be honest, I hoped for the best, but expected nothing. It was just a risk I felt was worth taking and dr. Basha has been the only doctor who dared to take that risk with me. Dr. Basha told me that we would be able to determine progress by the six-month mark. I began my treatments with him in mid-April. I should also point out that I had to take five weeks off this summer due to vacation and a move. I was a bit concerned that this would halt my progress, but it couldn't be helped. So all in all, I've been in treatment for four months. I'm now able to detect lighter and darker colors more often than before. Due to the fact that I haven't been able to experience stable enough vision, I'm still learning colors. This is a trick. It's very different when you're born blind, because you aren't always able to conceptualize what you're seeing. Someone who goes blind later in life has the advantage of having seen before. In my case, my frame of reference is limited. I have to ask people around me, because I'm still learning to trust what I'm perceiving with my eyes. By the third month, I began to see movement from across the room; but my biggest breakthrough thus far was this week when I went to a fund raiser. I was seated about twenty-five feet from the stage and was able to see movement up there. This blew my mind! I have never been able to see movement of any kind from that distance! Dr. Basha is truly a pioneer and a rare and precious find, even in his field. This is coming from someone who has wasted many hours, both as a child and adult, in doctor's offices, only for them to give me the same useless information. I cannot express enough the depth of my respect for Dr. Basha for his willingness to think outside the box! We both knew from the beginning that it may not work, but he was willing to try. To me, that speaks volumes! He is in his practice to help his patients, not to collect insurance money and do nothing to improve on their health and lives. Treatment isn't over yet, and, even if this is the most progress I get, it is far more than I ever expected or experienced. At this point, I'd say we are cautiously optimistic for more. Dr. Basha is fond of saying he likes to under-promise and over-deliver. I'd definitely say he has over-delivered this time! Not only have I experienced improvement in my vision, but his herbal treatments, acupuncture and supplements are consequently causing improvement in my overall health. We'll be working together for many years to come, and I would recommend Dr. Basha to anyone.

(It was only like 11 am) I noticed a sign right at the entrance that read "Flu and H1N1 Vaccinations." "We'll I got nothin better to do" I say to myself and take a stroll over. Swine flu sounds like the dirtiest, most disgusting illness ever so while waiting for my flight I decided to partake in the convenience Pacifica Medical brought to the terminal today. Originally $15 bones for the shot, but I picked it up at $13 on account of being a San Diego resident. Boooya for saving 2 bucks! Like most people I really hate needles, but the nurse who administered my shot was gentle and stuck me without giving my tear ducts a workout. Whoever at Pacifica Medical thought to post up in an airport terminal is a pretty smart person considering many illness start from germs contracted here. Gotta give them a 5 because I probably would have never gotten the anti-swine-flu brew had it not been located so conveniently.

My last call was with Charlotte Lass in San Diego Member Services Management who said she would follow up on my concerns. Surprise...it's been crickets ever since I spoke with her and sent documentation of all my attempts at reaching them. I've heard of many other people who have experienced the exact same thing...no response from Grievance Operations. I think this is done deliberately so people get discouraged and just stop complaining. If you experience this non-responsiveness, please take all of your documentation and any correspondence they have sent you (as well as a summary of your attempts to contact Grievance Operations) and file a complaint with the CA Department of Managed Health Care. Their total lack of response to Member complaints is appalling. https://www.dmhc.ca.gov

I am leaving Kaiser as a healthcare provider. I have been ill once in years. The one time I get…read moresick I cannot get an appointment. So I went to urgent care. Once in urgent care, they directed me to the emergency room because they said they would need to do a CT Scan and it could only be in the emergency room. The emergency. room experience was not a good one. Six hours of freezing and no food. After, I went to their cafeteria that is horrible to get something hot to warm up and I was scolded and told that I can't leave the emergency room. I was starving. The next day, I was sicker than I was when I went there from getting sick while there. And the truth is the CT Scan isn't in the emergency room or in urgent care. So I was billed over 10grand for an emergency room visit. I paid my deductible before I left and then for 4 months have been faxing the proof that I paid and they keep robocalling me and won't let me alone. Getting anyone on the phone takes more time than driving to the facility. Every time I call the financial department to tell them I paid it they said they need more proof. The receipt that is written by Kaiser isn't good enough. They need my bank records. Then I go to fax it and they keep saying it can't be done. Their patient portal is a mess and they admit they get complaints all the time. The less than 15 minute annual physical exam is not thorough and they keep it to the schedule. In my experience, they are about money not about healthcare. Then I started reading about Kaiser online. My advice is research it before signing up. After my research on Kaiser, I need to find another way other than the Kaiser way.
