All that I tried were delicious. The bourbon ball, Ruth's Mint Kentucky Colonel, the pumpkin spice. The business has been around since 1919 and is a fourth-generation KY business. I found their business brochure at the Kentucky welcome center and was intrigued immediately. The story of Ruth Booe and her candy making techniques which led to her and her friend's success. Be sure to try or get some of the original "Bourbon Ball" Invented by Ruth Booe in 1938. It consists of a creamy bourbon center with the kick of real bourbon, covered in dark chocolate, and topped with a Southern pecan. I did taste that kick when I sampled it. I purchased a variety box of make my own as well as some bourbon balls to take back home for family and friends. Got my mom some dark chocolate toffees since she loves toffee. Travelling full time, we never pass up a factory tour! We arrived during lunch so had to head out to find some ourselves while we waited. We were greeted on the porch by Callie, the sweetest gal in all of Kentucky, who offered us an umbrella since we were walking to find lunch! I promised to bring it back and off we went! All of the employees are amazing, very friendly and you can tell they love what they do. Callie went out of her way to make sure each customer was treated special, she's the best of the best! Our tour guide was Elizabeth who, although very new to touring, was excellent. She knew the factory well and was able to answer all but one of our questions; where'd the Kiss wrapping machine come from!! The factory is small and run by just 9 employees, complete with the Lucy station!! The chocolates are perfect small sweet confections, rich and creamy with that old time goodness. We loved learning the history of Rebecca Ruth's candy store, the tour was very informative and interesting without being too long! I believe it was Debbie that started our tour and though she wasn't with us the entire time we loved her input, she provided a wealth of historical knowledge, was enthusiastic, and easy to talk to. We got several samples and left with some wonderful treats! I failed to get her name but the woman who served our candies was an absolute delight as well. I was driving through the area on a long trip back to Indiana and noticed a sign for a candy tour. I thought that sounds like a fun stop. I did not take the tour but I very much enjoyed a few chocolates and caramel covered marshmallow and just checking out the small shop. What an unexpected win! I'm not sure what I was expecting, but Rebecca-Ruth Candy Tour and Museum far exceeded whatever I had in mind! This family candy-making operation was founded in 1919 and is currently owned and operated by the original founder's grandson. The founder is credited with inventing bourbon ball candy during the prohibition era. We opted for the tour and I am so thankful that we did. The tour is a historical overview of the company and the struggles of a female-owned business during its early years. There are pieces of original equipment on display alongside current operations. Visitors can watch candy being made (weekdays only) and hear about the differences between today's processes and those of the past. At the end of the tour is a very informative (although very sad in many parts) short film, and of course, a delicious sample! I found the tour to be well worth the price of $8. There are so many candy options for sale besides bourbon balls. There are alcoholic and non-alcoholic bourbon balls, cherry cordials, truffles, and brittle. There was also Kentucky pull candy, several candies sweetened with a sugar substitute (the salted caramels of this variety were awesome!) and so much more. In addition to their own bourbon balls, the store sells varieties made with bourbon from certain Kentucky distilleries. For those who live in Louisville, this is a wonderful day trip and who doesn't love supporting family-owned businesses and Kentucky bourbon! read more

This is the first time at this location. Several years ago we went on a woodford reserve tour and wanted to get more candy from the actual maker. On the way to Louisville we stopped here to grab some candy today. The staff were very friendly and kind to us. They even let us in on a savings of boo-boos.. slightly imperfect candy but cheaper than it's boxed counterparts. I would be silly to say no to that. I was looking for woodford reserve variety but was told it is an exclusive to another brand.. now it's been a very long time since I had them so I am thinking they just somehow no longer partner with them because I do have the box remnants from awhile ago they did indeed sell them.. either way these are just as delicious and I am ok with trying their brands of bourbon balls. We were traveling through Frankfort, and stumbled upon the Rebecca Ruth Candy Tours and Museum. To be honest, being originally from Pennsylvania, I was familiar with Gertrude Hawks Chocolates and Hershey's, but not Rebecca Ruth. But, we had some time to kill, so why not? Guided tours of the small factory are offered Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. Adults are $8, while children aged 0-17 are $5. The tour includes a look at both antique and modern chocolate-making equipment (including an early refrigerator, the assembly line, marble table, and packaging), a short film, and a chocolate (bourbon ball) sample. While the maximum tour size is 15, our tour included only the tour guide and the two of us. Rebecca Ruth has been family-owned and -operated since 1919, and the story of the survival of the company through family tragedies, the Depression and economic hard times, and a major fire is fascinating. There is a small shop wherein a wide variety of chocolates are sold by weight or pre-packaged. They're quite pricey but oh so good! We noticed later that there are other Rebecca Ruth retail outlets in Frankfort, and that a RR bourbon ball is given during tastings at distillery tastings at Buffalo Trace. Both the tour guide and shop personnel were knowledgeable and friendly, and the chocolates were tasty. The 3-star rating is largely because of cost -- both the tour and the chocolates are on the expensive side. read more

I advise all visitors to take the tour of the factory and experience the video that portrays the life of a truly amazing woman. I was particularly amazed at the story of the marble cooling slab that endure 'hell fire and brimstone' to be rescued by the company from an old hotel. Traveling across country and stopped in as it was on my list of stops. Friendly staff. Interesting store. Candy along with chocolate and trinkets. I tried three pieces of chocolate. Cost $5.82. One piece was a dark cherry chocolate, another was a dark brittle bark and the third a bourbon coffee cream ball. All the chocolate was worth the price. And you can taste the bourbon! While visiting Frankfort for a family reunion, our tour guide with Central Kentucky Tours surprised us with a stop at Rebecca Ruth after he heard us talking about not having time to go there. In between distillery tours, here we came.......seven of us with sweet tooths. We enjoyed a sample bourbon ball. OMG. I'm not a bourbon drinker, but I love to cook and bake with bourbon so this bourbon ball was right up my alley. We stocked up on lots of chocolates and bourbon balls and got to sample some toffee that an employee had just made while giving a tour. We didn't get to take the tour, but did peruse the candy store and museum. I learned that Rebecca Ruth was actually two women: Rebecca AND Ruth, who endured rumors that they were soaking nuts and fruits in liquor then selling the liquor laced chocolate from a barroom at the Old Frankfort Hotel. Sadly, no candy factory tours due to coronavirus but the store is open and the service is still friendly. I stopped in and picked up entirely too much chocolate today. Nearly all of it managed to make it home except for the chocolate-covered cashews. And the nice lady who served me added an extra one! Bourbon balls are amazing. The chocolate is amazing. And it's available in sizes from small to huge. Gift boxes, bags of loose candy, all sorts. Summer weather is unkind to chocolate so plan ahead. Cool little candy factory in Frankfort- they have a tour of the factory with a lot of the historical equipment. Unfortunately, it is closed on Sundays so we missed it, but would like to come back and try. They do make lots of Bourbon balls, and give out free samples, and have an extensive selection for purchase. I did the next best thing to call and ask if someone could do a curbside checkout. I called several times but they would not answer the phone. This experience was severely disappointing. When we first arrived my group of 4 thought it would be a cute little activity to do for the day, though we were then mislead by our thoughts. When the tour first started the guide led us outside to look in some empty windows. While being told that's where the employees work to make the chocolate there was in fact no employees in sight. The guide then switched us off to another tour guide. The second guide lead us to a hallway where three cases with tools that the candy makers made. She pointed out that one of them were stupid and that she would not want to try one of the candy's because it could be dangerous. She then took us to a small room that provided us an 8 minute video that lacked much information about the factory. I've been seeing signs for the Rebecca-Ruth Candy tours for years and I've always wanted to do one. Luckily, I managed to convince the people I was with to check it out. The house is in a small neighborhood but was easy to find. When you walk through the door, you are overwhelmed by the smell of delicious chocolate. They have a small store to check out once you end the tour. We started our tour by watching a video that talked about their bourbon balls. Fun fact - this is where the bourbon ball originated. The history of the business is fascinating. They just celebrated their 100th anniversary, which is amazing when you learn of all the adversities they overcame. The line wasn't running on the weekend but we got to see the different stations. I'd love to come back and watch what I refer to as the Ethel/Lucy line of putting pecans on the bourbon balls and then boxing them. What blew my mind was this seemingly small operation produces over 3 million bourbon balls annually. There is a small museum as well with lots of memorabilia. We sampled the bourbon balls and each walked away with boxes of different chocolates. Definitely worth the $5 admission fee for the tour! read more

When we stopped by the store on Versaille, we learned that they offer tours and have a museum at the location inside town. We decided to stop in after lunch. Ruth Hanly Booe created the Bourbon Ball. We watched a video, had a tour then shopped in the little store. There is also a little cafe inside. We were able to see the day to day operations of making the sweet goodness that is Rebecca Ruth Candy. The equipment originally used is still used today. We watched the nougat being dropped on the belt, through chocolate for the bottom then covered in chocolate, topped with a pecan and ran thru a cooler before being boxed up. The staff were very sweet and said if there was anything we wanted to taste before we buy, just ask. I grabbed a bag of the Buffalo Trace Oops Bag to take home since I already grabbed a variety box of chocolates at their other location. read more

Pro tip buy the oops Buffalo Trace Bourbon balls here! They may not be pretty but they are awesome and the best bourbon balls I had. I thought I did not like them until I had the Buffalo Trace ones.
