I found their business brochure at the Kentucky welcome center and was intrigued immediately. The story of Ruth Booe and her candy making techniques which led to her and her friend's success. Be sure to try or get some of the original "Bourbon Ball" Invented by Ruth Booe in 1938. It consists of a creamy bourbon center with the kick of real bourbon, covered in dark chocolate, and topped with a Southern pecan. I did taste that kick when I sampled it. I purchased a variety box of make my own as well as some bourbon balls to take back home for family and friends. Got my mom some dark chocolate toffees since she loves toffee. The store is cute and welcoming. Staff is super friendly. Go check this place out and support local and long time business!

I was greeted warmly and offered a sample of one of their well know bourbon candies with a single pecan on it. Of course I enjoyed and have actually had before. They make the chocolates for many of the distilleries in the area and have for decades. The business itself dates back to 1919. I did not do a tour, but it appears they offer. Ruth's offer a lot of variety and I do mean a lot! They also some of the branded boxes like Makers Mark. The service was top notch as everything was explained. I decided on a non bourbon chocolate so my wife could enjoy too. So I ordered a half pound of three varieties of chocolate (white, dark, milk) with almonds. The chocolate's in the case are put in their own box, as opposed to the gift boxes. I really enjoyed after returning from my trip, wife too! Easy 5 stars and will return at some point.

For 120 years, Anna's family passed this amazing recipe down & after working in her parents basement she now sells all over the world, even to Williams Sonoma. And now Vegas regularly. They open at 9am and offer free tours as long as you reserve online. The gift shop is huge and some of the bourbons are limited to one or two per person. My family had visited in 2017 and 2023 and raved about it, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, after visiting five distilleries during our trip, this was one of my least favorite experiences. To start with the positives: the tours are free, which is generous, and the drinks at the bar are reasonably priced. Our guide, Tony, was knowledgeable and friendly when answering questions. However, the tour itself felt underwhelming and lacked depth. We never went inside the actual production areas, learned much about the grains or bourbon-making process, or experienced the sights and aromas I expected from a distillery tour. Even my spouse, felt the tour was somewhat scattered and lacking in detail. The tasting was even more disappointing. The tasting room was simply a room where everyone stood, and there was very little that felt special or memorable. We were given vodka samples, which felt out of place on a Bourbon Trail tour, and the bourbon selections themselves didn't feel particularly unique. Water wasn't provided at the tasting stations either; we had to walk over to a dispenser and use tiny paper cups. Most surprising of all, the tastings were served in clear plastic cups. After each pour, our guide mentioned how much the bottle cost in the gift shop, which made the presentation feel even more underwhelming. We were even told we could take the plastic tasting cups home as souvenirs. I understand that the tour is free, but Buffalo Trace is a major distillery with a huge reputation, so I expected a more polished and immersive experience. Between the lack of access to the production areas, standing throughout the tasting, limited variety, lack of readily available water, and plastic tasting cups, the overall experience felt much cheaper than I anticipated. The lemonade from the outdoor bar was actually very good and reasonably priced, so that was a bright spot. Unfortunately, overall, Buffalo Trace was one of my least favorite distillery tours and tastings of the trip.

I was driving from Nashville to Cincinnati and picked Frankfort as a place to get out of the car and walk for an hour. Not one to resist a craft store, I decided I could pop in for a minute or two. I perused the store for over an hour and left with $400 worth of merchandise. Completely Kentucky is, in my opinion, the best crafts store in the US. This is not a store where you go to "get a deal." The merchandise is priced so the artists can be decently compensated and the store can keep its lights on. That means not cheap. But coming from the left coast, I thought the prices were very reasonable. When it comes to wood and clay crafts, Kentucky knocks it out of the park. But this store features artists working in every manner of medium. Their commitment to providing a spot to as many Kentucky artists and crafts people as possible is impressive. I love this store. The day after I discovered them I started saving for my next visit. My goal is the have minimum $1000 to spend and to also bring along an empty suitcase so I can get all my loot back home. :)
