I've been by Ruth Candy many times while in the area and never had the time to stop in. Glad that changed on a bourbon trail trip. They are a tiny store, you can easily miss them, but they do set right off the road with good signage. The lot is small, but adequate. My visit was on a weekday in the Spring and they were not busy. I was greeted warmly and offered a sample of one of their well know bourbon candies with a single pecan on it. Of course I enjoyed and have actually had before. They make the chocolates for many of the distilleries in the area and have for decades. The business itself dates back to 1919. I did not do a tour, but it appears they offer. Ruth's offer a lot of variety and I do mean a lot! They also some of the branded boxes like Makers Mark. The service was top notch as everything was explained. I decided on a non bourbon chocolate so my wife could enjoy too. So I ordered a half pound of three varieties of chocolate (white, dark, milk) with almonds. The chocolate's in the case are put in their own box, as opposed to the gift boxes. I really enjoyed after returning from my trip, wife too! Easy 5 stars and will return at some point. read more

How fortunate I am to be able to purchase bourbon balls from the 1919 bourbon ball inventors. Service was excellent. I was greeted upon stepping through the door and offered a sample bourbon ball. I love to shop here for second bourbon balls from Buffalo Trace Distillery. I thought I had reviewed this location before and we stop here often coming back from Frankfort or Louisville Kentucky since it is on our way back to Lexington Kentucky. The store has a lot of neat gift items and all kind of chocolates. The store is a nice stop and when available we buy the bourbon balls since they are a bit cheaper and since they are for us we don't need the box. So on our way to Louisville Kentucky yesterday, my wife and I drove by this place and I told her that on the way back we were going to stop and pick up a box of chocolates. So we stopped today and after we got to the door, an older man welcomed us in. Might I add it was a very warm welcome. We had told him that this was our first time here and wanted to look at getting a box of chocolates. Well to my delightful surprise he offered us a piece of chocolate and let me tell you, it was delicious. You could taste the bourbon in the chocolate and it was so rich and creamy. Talk ABOUT satisfied your chocolate craving, oh my!! This certainly does the trick. So as you can see in the picture we bought an assortment of bourbon chocolates and we have tried each one. For just $37, (plus an assortment of other choices of chocolates) this place won't disappoint. Looks like this may be a start of a traditional item we won't pass up when we drive by it. It's not the factory, needless to say. Instead, it's a small candy store. And I'm glad I came here instead. While looking for a gift for a loved one on the way back, I felt no pressure and got plenty of excellent advice from the friendly lady behind the counter. The real win came from surprising a family member with dark chocolate bourbon caramels, which were apparently a hit. Located near our hotel, we decided to stop in since they make the bourbon balls for Buffalo Trace Distillery. We were greeted by such sweet and hospitable staff offering us a sample bourbon ball. This is a small location but full of chocolates and other candies, jewelry, and other collectibles. It smells soooo good in here....you don't want to leave. Here is something you need to know: in Kentucky "Versailles" is pronounced how it is spelled. Like "Versails", with a twang. A native told me if I say it any other way people won't know what I'm talking about. This is useful information if you are looking for some delicious chocolate covered bourbon candy somewhere along the route from Louisville to Lexington. A quaint Rebecca Ruth outpost is located on Versailles Rd. If you want a full candy factory tour the Rebecca Ruth candy factory is in Frankfort. The history of this candy is pretty interesting; you can read about it on the website. It must have taken some creativity to keep this business going through prohibition, the Great Depression, wars....and I like the idea that two women named Rebecca and Ruth went in on this together at a time when it was rare for a woman to start a business. I'm going to try and upload a picture of their bad asses on their horses. Bourbon balls are good, as one may suspect. The Rebecca Ruth Store sells several varieties and different sized packages and it would be difficult making a decision if the employees weren't so informative, kind, and patient. It was almost like a tourist shop with all the "Kentucky" items and had great local sauces and stuff to purchase. As far as the candy behind the counter, there seemed to be several choices. We went on the Rebecca Ruth Candy tour today. I've been eating the bourbon balls for years. My mom used to buy them and try to make a version of her own. So, I was excited to see the factory. It's inside a quaint little building in Frankfort. The people there were very friendly. It's $3 for the tour and it's very interesting. I can't believe they make 3 million candies a year in that tiny place. Maybe 10 people worked there and they were placing the pecans on the chocolates by hand and boxing them by hand, packaging by hand. Remarkable. The story of the candy shop is really interesting and inspiring - it's worth taking the tour. I have such respect for the women that founded it now. My husband was kind enough to buy me a box of their delicious chocolate to take home. YUM! read more

Bourbon Balls. I can't believe it took me six months to try them. I'm obsessed. The road warrior inside of me does the I-64, 75 circuit pretty often and I've been saying for most of a year that I was going to stop and do the Rebecca Ruth Factory tour. I had to get some gifts recently for my team and thought that I might go ahead and get those bourbon balls I hear about so often, especially since they're made of two of the finest things on earth. So this candy store is not part of the factory, which I believe is in Frankfort. It's the Frankfort/Versailles exit off of I64, and you go south. It's a small store on the west side of the road, and I would have missed it except for that big sign that said Bourbon Candy. It's a slice of heaven. I'm not kidding. They have samples of the bourbon balls, and it was all I could do not to stuff boxes down my shirt and run out the door. The bourbon balls are slightly on the expensive side (9 for $11 which is probably 1/2 a pound), but they do also have bourbon ball boo-boos, which run about $17 for a pound, saving you several dollars if you're not interested in appearance. They do have other choices also, which are pretty reasonable in cost. Bourbon fudge costs $5 for 9 pieces. A square of bourbon brittle will cost you $2.10. They have pull candy for about a dollar or two. You can even make up your own choices of chocolate from 1/4 pound (~$5-$6) to a pound (~$15-$17); these choices include cordial cherries, bourbon toffee, bourbon caramels, orange creams, raspberry creams, and lots more. They even have a pound of liquor creme assortments which run about $11. If you' re not interested in chocolate, they also have gummy bears and other sorts of candy for reasonable prices, along with Kentucky memorabilia. And the prices are a lot cheaper in store than they are online. Open every day from 10 AM until 6 PM. ...And if one day they started making Schlafly balls...I wouldn't ever leave. read more

Rebecca Ruth is a local candy factory/shop still owned and operated by locals which makes this place all the more charming. The tour was $3, and, while it was a short tour, it was cool to see all of the equipment which they make their candy on, the memorabilia, and to hear the stories about this Kentucky owned business. Added bonus-the bourbon ball chocolate that you get to try at the end of the tour is delicious! So worth buying a bag of boo-boos (ones that have cracked pecans or didn't pass quality control for something small). The bourbon ball chocolates are definitely their specialty. They add the bourbon after the cooking process so it doesn't burn out the alcohol! They are delicious. The perfect blend of chocolate and bourbon (and I'm not a huge fan of bourbon myself). They're also famous for their pulled candy and the original white stuff is delicious (although my gramma says that my great-great-grandma's recipe was better, but since I've never tried it I can't attest to that fact!). The candy is expensive--very expensive. But, then again, you're supporting a local candy story that's been in business close to 100 years and that isn't corporate! This is the cutest store I have seen in a while! Last week, during a trip to Lexington, we decided to stop here mainly because Rebecca Ruth is known for its bourbon balls, and I was not disappointed. Not only did they have the bourbon balls but they also had more than 20 different chocolate-covered and chocolate-filled items. I bought about 12 of the chocolates and enjoyed them all, though my favorites were the chocolate-covered caramel and the dark chocolate covered cherry. There was an actual cherry in it! I felt like I was in heaven. I was also surprised with how patient the store manager was and how quickly he was able to get us out on time to get to see the races. These are very good. I learned about them years ago when I lived with family there and attended the University of Kentucky. Yes, they're not cheap but good chocolate isn't cheap and the bourbon bonus is very good. I've given them as gifts and they are really enjoyed.
