I finally sought medical attention for arthritis in my thumb joints and was referred to Dr. Yu. Secured an appointment with Diana, a Physician Assistant. As a new patient, I had to fill out a couple of forms, but I cannot write. Maggie, a medical assistant, kindly took down my information. Diana arrived, gave both hands a diagnosis, and suggested treatment. Yes, a cortisone shot into my thumb joint. Ugh. While it was not pain free, she used a live X-ray and guided the injection effectively. I just had my left hand treated. I'm coming back in a month for the right hand. I have had two operation performed by Dr. Yu for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome that were separated by several years. Results were fantastic. Before my first operation I had to wear a glove all the time due to extreme paresthesia caused by nerve damage. After my operation I no longer had wear glove and could live a normal life. She is extremely knowledgeable matched by a great personality and the ability to explain things in a very concise manner. I was referred here by an urgent care dr. It was a bit of a drive for me and parking was hard to find at the time I came, but in the end, it was well worth that trouble. PA Broheen and MA Michael were great! They were both very friendly and thorough. I went to see Dr. Yu after falling on outstretched hands. She put me in a brace for a few weeks. Years later, I still don't understand why no PT was offered. One of my wrists doesn't function as well now, bending/gripping/pulling are all issues. It inhibits my day to day functioning and when i participate in sports, I compensate with my elbow which causes more and different pain. Her office did not do a good job recording my co-pays and it took some back and forth to get it resolved. Keep your receipts. read more

Care was fine, needed a cast for a broken wrist. Pretty routine... Costs were pretty high even with insurance. Due to covid, work pretty much ceased and I asked for some time to pay the remaining balance which wasn't much. I was told that was ok. I started to receive collection calls not long after. The first time I've ever had that happen. Pretty clear that they remained unaffected and unempathetic due to the pandemic. I've seen Dr Yu for treatment for two different conditions, separated by years. First, as to the person who reviewed the office as only being good for surgery, let me say that hasn't been my experience at all. For the first issue she told me my wrist and arm were atrophying due to mistreatment from another Dr. regarding my RSI. Yeah, that's right. Following Dr. Yu's directions to let them be natural w/o out any treatment they quickly and completely recovered. The 2nd time, many years later, I had damaged my thumb over a number of years due to the unresponsive SRAM left shifter on the bicycle. The thumb could become quite painful on grasping anything. On the first visit she suggested a brace which mitigated the issue. Several months later it flared up again. This time she offered the alternative of surgery but after discussing the pros and cons with her I decided against it. Got a new (different?) brace and again the problem mitigated. As a note for any cyclist: I then upgraded to electronic shifting and the issue, although chronic, has for practical purpose basically disappeared. No brace necessary. Only rarely since do I feel anything and when for only brief duration. Like a few seconds. Her office has always been efficient and friendly. read more

I change my opinion of this office. Initially, I had great medical care. The problem was the billing. In short, I ended up irritated by a billing/insurance snafu and it showed in my first Yelp review. (It was harsh enough to delete.) However... I recently realized and had to admit my finger is...completely restored. I thought for sure my injury was going to result in permanent loss of use. But I got excellent care at Dr Yu's office and I can use my hand again. I am very pleased. I would absolutely recommend this office, and I would gladly visit again. read more

I've had two different issues with my hands and Dr. Yu and her staff have been aces. I had one surgery to remove a piece of metal in my finger. It was very close to the nerves. She did a perfect job and my hand is totally recovered. I saw her again for a bad case of "trigger finger" and she's been very good. Dr. Yu runs a very profession and competent practice. I just had an appointment at Dr. You's office and I have to say I was really impressed! I needed to have a consultation on my wrist for a problem that I've had for about 17 years. I had a consultation years ago for the same issue, but I decided to hold off on seeking treatment based on some things that particular Dr. shared. This office really has it together! I was promptly greeted when I walked into the reception area, and I was able to head back into the office for my appointment within 5 minutes or less. The nurse that took me to the back was really friendly and answered some questions I had before seeing Dr. Yu. Once Dr. Yu arrived on the scene she took plenty of time to go over my medical history and to do some ultrasounds of my wrist. She let me know about all of my options and all of the risk associated with each option. She even gave me a card with the surgery code on it before I left to see how much of my procedure would be covered. I really appreciated the consistent level of care that I received from everyone that I met. If you have the ability to come to this office for your issue, don't hesitate. You will be blown away. After 2 surgeries and numerous office visits, I totally agree with my GP that Dr. Rebecca Yu is the best hand surgeon in the SF Bay Area. Even though I have no involvement with any other hand surgeons, I can relate from my experience with Dr. Yu that she is extremely knowledgeable, professional and ethical. She gave me sound and expert opinions on whether to have surgeries or not. She would give me a realistic picture of recovery and explain what to expect in the future. She never push for unnecessary surgeries. She gave me all the information and advise me to make the choice. I was especially impressed when she advised against another surgery on a busted ligament at a small bone in the wrist subsequent to my first surgery. Ultimately, I believed I made all the correct decisions for myself based on her professional guidance. She was very responsive. She responded and acted quickly to my post surgeries needs. Whenever I called, she and her office staff would respond and advise accordingly. Office visits were very efficient. Her office is well-equipped. She can diagnose readily with an instant x-ray machine (literally, at a push of a button). The surgical center she uses is very clean and the staffs are courteous and professional. Just a quick review to say this ortho practice and Dr. Yu are awesome. The front office is very efficient. Upon checking in, the waits on both my first and follow up visits were 5 minutes or less. The office is super clean and minimalist. Dr. Yu's assistant for the day walks you into the back offices for the intake and history for the electronic health records. I was able to review all of the issues regarding my hands, thumbs, fingers, and wrist. The assistant makes sure he or she understands it completely. They leave and bring back Dr. Yu. Once again, very little wait. Dr. Yu is efficient but allows plenty of time for questions. I had already been to Hand PT two years prior, but the condition had reared it's ugly head again. Not wanting surgery (just yet), she took some current X-rays because I had so much going on, and we discussed options. I chose PT, a different locale this time. PT made it worse :( I returned to Dr. Yu, and not wanting surgery still, I opted for the cortisone injection for my De Quervain's tenosynovitis. This condition was SO painful, for weeks! Uggg, it took all of my mental energy to deal with it. But, Dr. Yu got the injection in just the right spot, and two days later I was pain free. In the follow up appt the next month I also received two more injections, opposite hand for two trigger fingers, also successful. I only have good stuff to stay about Dr. Yu and staff. read more

My girlfriend had a terrible accident and lost part of her index finger. We originally went to Dr. Yu because of her excellent credentials, and her being part of our network. The ER doctor did his best but the result was not a good one, and Dr. Yu explained our options well without pushing for either choice. We appreciated her thorough explanation and gentle approach. Sorry to be the voice of decent but I can't recommend. Made an appointment a week ago, get a call the day before stating Dr. Yu is in the snow and wont make it back for the appointment. The woman making the call explained Dr. Yu was in the office up until Thursday, and was going on about the current state of the health world and guidelines preventing the Dr. from seeing patience. Would love to see these guidelines that restricts a HAND SURGEON from seeing patients.... It is more likely she is snowed in (as indicated from the start of the call) somewhere and couldn't be responsible enough to manage her time properly. Could have at the very least called on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday so I could arrange another referral from my PC. Thanks to Dr. Yu and her office staff they didn't even help with what we can do as patients, where we could get care. Just call back in a few weeks..... maybe. Was any thought put in to how you would reach out to patients? All of her patients are not miraculously well just because she is in the snow. Such a shame, regardless of her abilities she relies on bootstrapping to virus outbreaks to explain away her 3 day weekend in the snow. Ooops, her office staff probably shouldn't have started the conversation with "Dr. Yu is in the snow and wont make it back" It might have been better to just say "To socially distance the Dr. and concerns about spreading the virus, Dr. Yu has decided to stop seeing patients. Patients are advised to contact _______ for further care." Not having any information or plan for care is appalling as a provider. read more

I saw Dr. Yu several years ago for a broken index finger. She xrayed it, cast it and it became normal again--no drama. This year I had some cysts on my right wrist. We looked at it on an MRI and she drained them in the office and they came right back within 3 weeks. She recommended surgery if I wanted it. Everything is totally discussed with all options, the pros and cons, etc. I opted for the surgery, done outpatient, home by 10 am. This lady is good. My scar is fading and thin--only had this done in May '15. I protect from the sun, have full mobility, the cysts are gone and not coming back and no pain. Follow up was uneventful. She is generous with her time. Another really smart, knowledgeable,and super nice female doctor. Yep, my kind of experience. read more

Broke my thumb while skiing. Tahoe orthopedist saw as only solution operation, putting screw in to re-attach torn off piece of bone. Looking for a less invasive alternative, I consulted with Dr. Yu. She evaluated and found that there was a good chance that with a well placed cast the piece of bone would re-attach itself. Careful, regular monitoring was performed, and it worked out beautifully. After re-attachment, recommended hand therapy got everything going again, and after about 8 months it feels fully healed (59 yr old). The office is well organized and a pleasure to deal with. ​Dr. Yu is an incredible surgeon! I struggled with wrist pain and multiple surgeries from years of gymnastics and wear and tear of the cartilage. After meeting with Dr. Yu, I immediately felt confident that I was in the right hands. She is kind, extremely competent and keeps informed of the latest surgery techniques. She took the time to clearly explain all the possible courses of action for both wrists and to answer my questions. On the left wrist, she performed an ulnar shortening osteotomy and repaired a TFCC tear. A year later, she performed a partial neurectomy on the right wrist (de-nerving the wrist while still keeping full strength and range of motion) as an alternative to having to fuse the wrist. Both surgeries were a success and I can't give enough thanks to Dr. Yu and her entire staff! Everyone at the office in Berkeley and at the surgery center in Oakland are amazingly sweet and helpful. I would without hesitation recommend Dr. Yu to anyone in need of a wrist and hand surgeon. read more

After 6 weeks with a broken wrist (distal radial fracture) and trying to get treated through my horrible version of Medi-cal (Alameda Alliance), being in constant pain, getting a bad cast, doctor misinformation, bad surgery, and then an abusive cast tech, I was told I needed more surgery. I could not bear to go back to Highland Hospital and wait yet again 4 to 6 hours hoping I might see the doctor I was told I should see or more abusive treatment. (My surgery day at Highland was 9 hours though the surgery took 2 hours.) Not even being able to talk to the surgeon post surgery except for a few moments in a room with other people as he was rushing on, was stressful too -- and then I was to wait 4 weeks before seeing him again in a terrible restrictive cast (doubled for some reason) that I knew was not what the surgeon requested. Then a second and third opinion said I needed another surgery immediately. Meanwhile, I could not use my hand and my fingers were losing function. So with the help of friends, I went to Dr. Yu, who is kind, considerate, and explained more than anyone else had of what was happening. I had the surgery and then was told yesterday that it was successful. If I'd seen her first, I would be well over the recovery time. She made it as easy as possible. Her assistant, Erin, is wonderful too, and I can reach both for advice and information when I need to. The good care plus knowing it's good care reduces so much of the stress. I met Dr. Yu on New Years Eve after fracturing my hip and shoulder in a sidewalk fall. She was the surgeon on call at the Alta Bates Emergency Room that evening (lucky me!). Dr. Yu described my fractures and the solutions I could choose from to heal those fractures; I chose to have surgery to place pins in my hip. Dr. Yu was friendly, sympathetic, reassuring and gracious and returned on New Years Day for surgery. My post op visits, both in and out of the hospital, were great. She evaluated my progress and answered my questions on regaining movement and fitness. The staff at the Cardon and Yu medical office is terrific. They ask detailed questions about the healing process and allow the patient to ask as many questions as needed. They have an on-line patient portal that allows you to see office and injury notes. And they have big computer screens to show your X-Rays and discuss what they show. I highly recommend Dr. Yu. read more

I gladly went out of network to have Dr. Yu remove a big embedded, infected splinter in my left pinky finger. What an awesome doctor she is! After weeks of delay at my HMO, Dr. Yu saw me quickly, confirmed right away by ultrasound that the splinter was there, and scheduled me for outpatient surgery 2 days later. The surgery center and Dr. Yu were a dream team, and I don't even need painkillers. I'd seen Dr. Yu's colleague, Lamont Cardon MD, in 2008 and I'd never encountered such a wonderful physician. Dr. Yu and her staff are absolutely wonderful. Appointments are always on time, the office staff is helpful and friendly, her medical assistants are just the best! Everyone to a person, is caring and knows what they are doing. AND...Dr. Yu is extremely competent!!! I had carpel tunnel and elbow surgery...no pain and great outcome so far. I am 2 weeks out from surgery and my wrist and elbow are progressing nicely. The surgery was done at the Surgery Center on 38th and Telegraph in Oakland. They were also quite wonderful.
