I am so happy to have found Rebellion MMA! My boxing gym had closed and I was looking for a new place to go. I had messaged from the website to see if I can try a class and Jeff has been so professional, kind and accommodating from the start. I took my first class with my 7 year old kid and we both fell in love! The gym has a great set up so that her and I have a class in tandem in different spots at the place but I can take a peak to see how she's doing. I have really enjoyed having this structure and set up. Jeff is very responsive and would text me back promptly. I was surprised even after hours he chose to respond to my questions. He has been an incredible coach and really a great person to work with. I am having to somewhat retrain what I had been doing with boxing/kickboxing and Jeff has made feel comfortable and motivated at my novice level. A family friend recommended I take my son to Rebellion, so of course I was excited for his free trial! Unfortunately, I failed to make it to my appointment on time which I did not realize until I was rudely reminded of the fact through text by Coach Jeff. At first, he apologized for not being there but soon after he told me to "Maybe make sure you're on time for your appointment before throwing words like "unprofessional" around." Personally, I felt offended. Maybe I'm being a little sensitive here, but I feel he needs to brush up on his customer service skills. I wish I'd had a better experience. Love This School! I've been here about a year and a half, and it's my favorite martial arts training ever. I was looking for something that was both challenging, and that would teach me- a woman- some self-defense techniques that I can actually use. The instructors are awesome- giving a lot of useful and personal guidance. Furthermore, Jeff has created an environment where all of the fellow students are just as much teachers as they are students. Whether somebody has been here 2 months, 2 Years or more than 10 years, I get awesome help from everybody. It's a super-collaborative environment, no egos, where everyone is challenged to grow. As a woman, my self-confidence has grown in my ability to both defend myself, as well as to overcome challenges (that at first seemed scary). Furthermore, I feel like I have some good ammo to defend myself. Lastly, my son- who's been coming for about 8 mo- absolutely loves it too. He's (who on the smaller size for his age) told me that, unlike his previous martial arts training, he feels like he could actually defend himself in the real world should things come to that. I mostly study the Jeet Kun Do and bit of Kali, and my son Jiu Jitsu. They also train Muay Thai Boxing. After searching the greater san diego for school specifically the FMA I have came across rebellion martial arts. I didn't know what to expect at first. All I know I wanted to start doing FMA. After my quick introduction to the academy with Will I was on my way to start. Location. The location itself is great. At first glance of the place looks very small. Looks can be deceiving. Once I was inside I was amazed on how big the place was actually was. The office was great which my kids by the way like hanging out. Training programs. The academy offers variety of self defense just to name a few BJJ, FMA (insanto, illustrisimo, Lacoste, PTK), judo, Sambo, JKD and also kids BJJ. I believe he also have a self defense shooting program for those who are interested. They also have an instructor programs which I would love to be one day. Facility. The training ground facility itself is great. It has all you need. Gloves, gi, sticks, dummy opponents heavy bag etc. and some weights on the back. this place is great and safe to train which Jeff emphasize each training curriculum. Coaches/sifus/guros/professors/"kuyas" However you call them, they are it. The instructors at rebellion martial arts are very knowledgeable in various martial arts. Very patient, professional, and very approachable. If you have questions they have answers, if you are having trouble with a specific flow or move they will explain it in detail. If you have more questions they will stay after class and explain it even further. For parents or single parents with kids. I have two kids that I take with me to class every time. I have never felt that they weren't safe in the facility. My kids enjoy being there specially playing in the couch (something about that Coach you can literally fall asleep by just sitting on it.) Where do I begin. Well let's see here Jeff the head coach is by far the greatest Coach in the universe (yes you read that correctly universe!) Not only is he an amazing Coach, he is truly an incredible human being. His teaching method works for everyone. For example I am a 105lbs female who is 5ft 2inches and extremely stubborn, on top of that I was in the military, constantly going on DET's and field ops, so I basically had a sporadic schedule. Jeff (and some of the other students) were always so understanding and great about working around my schedule. Plus Jeff would always make sure everyone understood the finer points of a technique. Even when I would get so frustrated, because I couldn't understand a move, Jeff would help calm me down and then walk me through it till I was comfortable with it. Jeff also always observed all of us as we trained and would adjust as we went. On top of his great teaching methods he genuinely cares about every one of his students. If you missed a class more then once he would always check in to make sure everything is ok. Next is Will, he is the other coach and is in charge of teaching the kiddos. Will is so patient, calm, and respectful of the little kids. The kids absolutely adore him and Coach Ephie (who is the best training partner ever) the kids learn to respect each other while having a good time and learning discpline. All the students and other coaches are just super awesome people who respect each other and only want to help each other reach their goals. I really cannot say enough good things about the coaches and students. Jeff and Will have my utmost respect and will always be family to me. If it weren't for the fact that I had to move to another state I would still be going there. Best school in the universe!!!! (I know this because I've gone to several different martial arts schools). Coaches Wil, Effie, & Jordan are very patient, dedicated, skilled, and professional. 4x/week training makes it easier for the kids to remember the skills they learn each time. We started training here as a family for almost two months now. Due to my work schedule I'm not able to train but my boys LOVE it and so does my husband. They have kids classes.. younger group (?-7yr) and an older group (8yrs-?).. my youngest boy is 7 and enjoys the older kids class more ... Coach Will and Coach Effie were nice enough to let him roll with the big boys.. the younger class teaches more of the basic fundamentals so he often takes both classes the same day. When I actually made it to the gym, I wasn't up for training I felt like I needed to get fit first. Coach Jeff approached me EVERY TIME( which was only about a handful of times) I came to watch my kids and said "let's go." One time, there was this rolling drill I just couldn't get down. I became frustrated to the point that I looked at my husband and said "I'm not doing this!" Coach Jeff came up to me and as embarrassed as I was.. he understood and reassured me that it was ok.. he got me up... instead of just moving on we went to the side and he showed me some exercises that would help build core strength. I love the comradery of the academy and how helpful everyone is with making sure you understand the techniques and what it takes to get better. Professor Jeff is always willing to answer questions I have. The other coaches are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I look forward to training at every class! Started adding private lessons with Jeff to my jiu-jitsu training. You definitely get what you pay for... Great 1-on-1 instruction. It wasn't what I expected. I was thinking a Q&A session with a Show&Tell.... Nope... You get a about a half an hour of sparring with Jeff then your technique is broken down and critiqued/improved after. He prepared me as best he can in the 2 months I had to prepare for my first tournament. I competed in a Seniors III, Open weight class, white belt division. I went against a huge opponent and lost. My experience: I was looking for a place to start training, I have zero background in martial arts, and heard good things about this place (this was when it was at their old location). I am a petite female and wanted to learn skills that would actually be useful for me to defend myself. I called the academy and spoke to Will. He set an introduction for me to attend to show me some general aspects of a variety of styles. I enjoyed it, Will was great and took the time to help a brand new person. I wanted to attend the BJJ classes, which I thought and had heard would be beneficial for smaller people learning to defend themselves against larger people. I bought a gi so I could attend the classes during my 30 day trial period (which I thought was kind of dumb since I did not know if I would like it). SO HAPPY I DID NOT SIGN UP. First off there was only one other female in the BJJ class, that did not really bother me, but just made me wonder why no other females were joining. Second, my first BJJ class I attend Jeff talks about his past military experience and how one time he thought he killed a guy while they were fighting. NOT the best first impression to give! Jeff TALKED a lot, sometimes about relevant stuff but mostly it seemed like he was boasting about himself. Jeff does seem like a knowledgeable guy when it comes to martial arts, but he is not the most approachable. In one class I asked to practice with the biggest guy there to see if this move would work on someone so much bigger than myself. It took me a little while to make him tap and I asked if it looked like I did the move right. Jeff started critiquing me about little things like my hip placement but since he tapped clearly I did it well enough. The things I was critiqued on are things that would matter in BJJ competitions. THAT WAS NOT WHAT I WAS THERE FOR. I wanted to learn some real self-defense, I did not care about belt levels or competing. WHICH I TOLD BOTH WILL AND JEFF. Another big problem, they are the only two who were working there (again at the old location). I guess they had other instructors, but I never saw anyone else until my last day. Will and Jeff would fight in their office upstairs but it was easy to overhear them. NOT PROFESSIONAL. I heard Will tell Jeff that people come to learn for different reasons, LIKE ME. Jeff basically yelled something back along the lines of this is my academy. I went to two Kali classes and Jeff had me learn how to do 4, 6, and 8 count first on a bag. That makes sense I am new and have no idea what I am doing. While his class is going I am practicing on the bag he comes over and just starts talking to me, telling me stories about himself. So basically I stood there holding sticks listening to a guy talk and some guys practice. It just seems like Jeff is full of himself. Jeff and Will seem to know their stuff. Will seems to be more level headed and more approachable. BJJ is clearly the favorite group. Jeff likes to talk. To sum everything up I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you only want to do BJJ AND COMPETE! read more

There are a range of people from under 21 to 40+ with all different levels of experience. It's a really good workout too for mostly everyone. Fantastic for kids too. I started looking into joining a martial arts school after realizing I was bored of pushing weights around at a local gym. Since I always admired Bruce Lee, I decided that if I was going to commit myself to a martial art that I would learn Jeet Kune Do. But besides JKD, Kali (FMA), Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Muay Thai are also being taught at the school. The only contact sport I've ever played was HS football, so I was concerned that being close to 40 yrs old and not having any experience in martial arts that I would end up being someones punching bag. But Jeff, the owner and one of the instructors at the academy assured my safety and explained his reasons why regardless of anyones fighting/martial arts experience, training with students from different levels of experience was beneficial. The students are very welcoming, respectful and patient. Everyone at the academy is there to help each other. The instructors at the academy great! Great school? Or greatest school? I don't know because I haven't checked out all of them yet, but Rebellion Academy is a contender. I came for the Kali and found the school had plenty more to offer. Check out the class schedule. I've known schools to advertise a similar laundry list of styles to bring in students, but only teach one or two competently. Not here. The head instructor, Jeff, is a martial polymath that can address all ranges of combat. If, like me, you really care about effective self-defense, you want that kind of perspective. Some students want to specialize and/or train for competition. Either way, you can get solid training from Jeff or one of the other skilled instructors. Top notch instructions from both the BJJ professors here, Jeff and Will. Very knowledgeable and technical when they break down the techniques for the class to follow, as it is precise to the tiniest details. I can see my ground game improve tremendously day by day. Rebellion offer both gi and nogi, along with other martial arts like JKD, Muay Thai, Kali, etc. One of my favorite class here is the BJJ all out rolling Friday class where you just roll with different partners for 2 hours, which you willget to the point of complete exhaustion and have to rely on techniques and timing in order to win. The instructors really care about your progression and are intuitive enough to know how to adapt to the level and ability that you're at in terms of learning, athletic ability, etc. I am constantly recommending this place to everyone I know and meet. They allow for a month free of unlimited classes, initially, and I know if someone takes it seriously, they will want to continue on learning and improving and gaining legitimate self defense skills. I've been training at the Academy for more than 10 years and found it to be a great environment for a number of reasons. Diverse arts are taught from a basic (beginning level) to advanced. If you want to focus on a single art you can and achieve a very high level of expertise. If you want to diversify your skills this is a great place to do it. The main reason this is possible is that Jeff has spent a lifetime educating and training himself in the most effective martial Arts and self-defense techniques and teaching them. This goes beyond just hand to hand techniques. Jeff is one of the best instructors out there---highly experience, knowledgeable and straightforward in his instruction. That's great because I don't have time to waste. I've seen him work with all ages male and female and am always impressed with how he interacts with his students and people in general. He's taught me a lot and how to teach to others as well. I really appreciate that. Importantly he doesn't allow "bad actors" at the academy no matter what the cost. I have trained here on and off for about 4 years, and after training up in the Bay area prior to moving to San Diego I can tell you that this school is as good as it gets. I train gi/no gi BJJ and the instruction you get from Jeff and Will are second to none. The best analogy I can think of is Jeff is simply a Jedi Knight when it comes to martial arts.
