Great store with lots of great media. The best of the 3 Reckless' I am a vinyl collector so this is the place for me. The inventory is constantly being updated. They are always getting new stuff. People bring not only vinyl but also DVD's, CD's, and Cassette's. I've gotten LOST on DVD and my GF got Felicity. All were in great shape. Prices are good, too. You can find vinyl for as little as 50 cent. We got our DVD's for super cheap. One was even still in the original packaging. The staff is mostly friendly. There might be a couple who have that "I know everything about music" attitude but nothing to be alarmed about. 90% helpful. If you want used vinyl, new vinyl, tapes, cd's, dvds --- go to Reckless. OK, you sell records, but don't blast your customers quite so much that they can't think or be heard by the staff when asking questions. Having said that, I found a lot of vinyl I have been looking for, just no way to get it home this trip. Pricing varies greatly so you will want to do a manual check of the condition. I love the selection here, it was close to my apt but girl with green hair is very rude, arrogant and cruel towards customers. Looking at the other reviews it's clear others have experienced similar behavior from her. It's funny because she is so expressive in how she dresses and yet has zero tolerance for others. Positioned in a hip and bustling Chicago neighborhood, this is a must stop for locals and visitors alike. Great selection of new and used vinyl, as well as CD's. I found a used Motown collection which included a set of 4 albums in good condition for only $5.99. The space is organized well, and isn't overwhelming. Reasonable record store with a decent mix of new and obscure listings. I'm just beginning to get into vinyl (which is a crazy thing to say at this point) and am looking to start a small but on-point collection. I browsed the selections for a while, often exclaiming things like: "Oh, I remember this," or, "I wonder if that mullet got him a lot of street cred back then." Ultimately I found a few of the titles I was hoping to find, but left without purchasing anything. The prices are fair, and the staff seemed really great. When the CD and vinyl finally go the way of the dodo bird, it is establishments like this that I will miss the most. I have spent hours in this place, looking through the stacks of used and rare CD's, DYI music zines and fantastic Jazz vinyl. It has the chill vibe and the musty smell that accompany most urban music meccas, and the staff are the nicest collection of hopeless music nerds I have ever come across. They might not have exactly what I was looking for when I walked in the door, but I always walked out with something interesting. I wanted to visit some record shops to look for some old, used hip-hop CDs while I was in Chicago on vacation. The Reckless Records in Lake View was the best in the whole city! I went back to it three times and spent a great deal of time looking through their selection. The staff were always helpful, even offering new CD cases for some that were broken. Thank God small record stores actually exist, or I'd go insane. Reckless is a good place to go to kill time, waste money, people watch, and every once and a while catch some free live music(although I haven't done that at this one yet). The prices are reasonable here for the most part, and some of them are downright cheap. It's a little hard to get the hang of browsing through cds at first, but you get the hang of it. Plus their website has their entire inventory, so you can search if one of their stores has what you want before you go there. The main complaint people have about this place is the folks that work there being rude. Haven't really experienced this at all yet- sometimes they seem to be in their own world behind the desk there, but they're record store clerks- what do you expect? read more

Zine selection is of the "maga" variety (get it, magazine, not zines, ho ho), hit up the madison location for better results. This is probably the best place to buy music in this city. They have a ridiculously huge selection of all genres. If you're into a not-so-popular music genre, there's no guarantee that you'll find exactly what you're looking for, but there's a good chance that you'll find something you'd like that you probably couldn't find anywhere else. If you like mainstream music, I'd suggest you make this your first stop when looking for a particular CD because there's a pretty good chance you'll find it here and you'll pay about six dollars less for it than you would at the mall. They also have an enormous DVD selection that could rival Best Buy, Fry's Electronics and Wal Mart combined. If the movie you want hasn't been transferred to DVD yet, there's a possibility you can find it in their VHS section (because they have the foresight to still carry VHS. Oh yeah, and vinyl too). Don't worry about a CD or DVD being unplayable because it's used. I've bought plenty from Reckless and have never once had a problem. It's twice the selection of any other entertainment store and half the price. read more

This is one of the best record stores I have been to. The people know what sells and what doesn't, so the store isn't full of garbage. If there is something you want and it is not in stock, they can try to have it sent over from another store for free. Their prices are great on records and cds, and fair on dvds. You can find great deals on some dvds and some are just the same price you see every where else. The store has a very laid back feel and makes it enjoyable to hang out, listen to music and search for a rare find. I hope that feel doesn't disappear when they move this summer down the road. If they were moving closer to me, that would be great, but they are moving a little further south. I will still make it my go-to place to find great records, cds, and movies. I really dig that I can pick up a copy of VICE magazine along with all the other fliers and bills for shows and events in the area. I have sold stuff there before and have gotten a decent price for what I had, usually in store credit so I can turn around and get more great stuff. Make sure to check this place out if you are looking for a new record store to make all your own. It's a rare find in this time of corporations running everything. Fantastic store, especially for their selection of used music. If you want a good time, walk into the store with nothing particular in mind, and head straight for the new arrivals section -- the newest acquisitions for the store. Chances are, you'll find your gems in that section before you even need to hit the rest of the floor. As for the complaints about the staff in some of the reviews, I've always found the staff to be helpful with my questions, and I have never had a problem asking about a special order or new release or anything else along those lines. read more

If I could marry this store, I would. Some friends of mine moved out to the western suburbs from Michigan a few years before I moved out here. Whenever I was out visiting them, I always went out of my way to come here on the way back home. These days, when my brother comes to town to visit, its the first place we go. Great selection and despite what many others have said, I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The only negative is that I always end up spending far more than I planned when I stop in. That being said, its not a store for everyone -- if you are looking for a new Nickelback single or the 5th-post-retirement album from Jay-Z, you probably shouldn't head here. read more

I struck out again at another record store location for this franchise.This location has more dust on it's shelves than the one in the loop.It also has a Male employee that acts like he has a bloody murder scene like monthly menstrual cycle unfortunately.I said "how you're doing"? I called ahead mind you and asked before I went in to the store if it would be ok for me to exchange a DVD I bought which was a gift for someone who already had that movie. They said it would be fine. I go into the store and this "person" gave me such a huge attitude the whole time. I was polite and explained my story but I was still treated like poop. The Lakeview location is great mostly because the only indie pop record store employee I have ever met works at this location and he always keeps me up to date with anything I may not know about.
