This is exactly what I got. There actually was a student there, so both her and the masseuse both worked their magic on me. It was the most intense massage I've ever had (not for wimps!) but that's because I asked for it, and I needed it. I felt amazing after. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was the masseuse got there almost 15 minutes late (I know I scheduled my appt last minute, but if she couldn't make it then I could have just scheduled it for 4:15 instead of rushing there just to wait) and it was over 15 minutes of me laying there with a heating pad on my back before anyone came in. This got frustrating after a while because I could hear everyone talking up front so it wasn't peaceful, I didn't know it would be this long of an ordeal (I assumed maybe 5 minutes max of this would happen to warm my muscles up) and I have a heating pad at home if I want 15+ minutes of sitting with it on. I knew my neck was tight and I hoped a massage would help loosen things. Knowing that I didn't want to go to a normal spa for a simple relaxation massage, I found Monica's Massage online and thought I'd give it a shot. I booked a 90 minute massage, assuming that the length would help. I told her my issues and headache problems and she told me that I should do a deep tissue massage and she went to work on me. The massage was deep, intense, and loosened me up amazingly. I had NO idea that I had knots in places on my upper back and shoulders. She told me that 90 minutes would be too long for this type of massage and we only did 50 minutes. It was *perfect.* The night of the massage I felt better than I had in weeks and was able to sleep through the night without waking with head pain. I plan to return to loosen up the rest of the knots and keep me in tip top shape. (Update October 2014) I have been headache free for months, and cannot recommend Monica's massage highly enough. She moves in micro movements to start the session, and then works up nicely to some yoga type stretches. There are moments where it feels like she's is "pressing buttons" inside your nervous system to provide gentle release. She knows exactly what she is doing. The time goes by quickly, but it's so worth it. Her shop is very cohesive and lovely. There's a custom mural on her wall that coordinates with the privacy wall's lovely tree with pink flowers. Enlightenment massage has only been open 7 months, please come say hi. Sadly, there was an appointment right after mine so it didn't feel appropriate to snap some photos. Next time!

The studio is a single-room space with one mattress, used for both massage sessions and the practitioner's personal living, sleeping, and intimate activities. There is no physical separation between professional and personal space. There is also no shower--only a bathroom sink used for bathing. This means clients receive bodywork on the same surface used for sleep and sex. These conditions were never disclosed to me beforehand. Had I known, I would not have consented. Later, I became aware that at least one other female client was also involved in a sexual dynamic with the practitioner. I personally witnessed an extended intimate interaction inside the studio, visible through the large storefront window. This reflects a concerning pattern of blurred lines between healing work, residential living, and intimacy. Despite the relief I experienced physically, I ultimately left in more trauma than when I arrived--due to a total lack of professional containment, boundaries, and ethical clarity. I share this not out of malice, but out of responsibility. I personally would not have consented to therapeutic care here had I known more about the environment, the interpersonal dynamics, or the practitioner's ethical practices.
