Say whaa? As a committed dumpling fiend of some repute I thought I knew every dumper ever made. But chicken momo? Gimme. Chicken was succulent, and slathered in a tomato relish that tasted of mild, fragrant curry the damn things were a taste sensation. I got 6. Then another 6. Since then I've been seeing O!Momo pop up all over the place, from Newtown Festival to Field Day in the Domain to it's latest incarnation in the courtyard of World Bar in King's Cross dishing out puffed rice salads and char-grilled skewers to hungry punters. And I met Bunny, the owner, a native Nepali fluent in more languages than I'll ever speak in my lifetime. Dudes like Bunny are part of the reason I love small businesses . . . he's super chilled out and intensely pro-human, as happy as he is dishing up deliciousness as he is hanging out with customers chatting about philosophy, festivals and traveling. Now all I have to do is get over to Nepal. It's on the bucket list. It's been there for ages. One of these days.... !

Typical dumpling restaurants serve bland vegetarian options that require a bucketload of sauce to even taste remotely interesting and half the time when I order chicken they are "out of them" and that's if I can even find chicken on the menu! My point here? Dumplings and me usually don't have a great relationship. So I was quite curious to see what a Nepalese dumpling tastes like. I got to try these little beauties for the first time at the Yelp '80s party and this may be a big claim but the chicken dumpling is probably the best I've ever tried. Unlike the typical Asian dumplings I am accustomed to- these were not average. The tomato relish and coriander was tasty accompaniment and a welcome surprise for my picky taste buds. Can't say I was a fan of the puffed rice salad and the vegetarian dumplings were more similar to the standard dumplings I'm used to- but that chicken one? I'd hunt this place down just for that alone.

The curries are flavoursome and the naan is fluffy and absorbent. Maiti Fusion is also the place that feels the most like a cozy restaurant, rather than a cheap eatery. Which is almost paradoxical, since they offer a bargain lunchtime special. The location might seem cursed, with the constantly-revolving restaurants that have tried to claim a home here. Hopefully, Maiti Fusion becomes a permanent resident, since Ashfield could use a bit more diversity.

The thalis had a variety of flavors, but aside from there rice, there wasn't enough chicken or dal bhat. Tip maybe go with the boneless chicken for the same price - hopefully you can get more that way. Aside from that, I found it to be a good place.

An unlikely series of events occurred, including me committing to an entirely vegetarian meal, to accommodate one vego friend out of three. Aloo Gobi was a kind of dry cauliflower dish which was incredibly tasty even though I didn't really know why. There was a vegie curry (Aloo Bodi Tama) which was the most Indian in flavour as well as an eggplant and spinach dish. Plus lots of rice. To my surprise none of the dishes were hot, as in spicy hot. The spices added flavour but the intensity of some Indian cooking was absent. Prices were reasonable with the entire meal costing around $55. The outdoor seating is another highlight, especially on a nice day; there's plenty of space to sit and enjoy the beach-town atmosphere. On a separate note (and honestly pretty important for travelers), it was surprisingly frustrating trying to find reliable restaurant reviews in Sydney the way we're used to in Los Angeles. Their Sagwaala dishes are my favourite, and I always have the Vege Momo as an entree. These are beautiful dumplings. But I've tried most of their dishes and base flavours, which are always excellently done. Saffron Chicken, Tikka Masala, Chicken Chettinad, etc are other favourites. I also like the Nepalese goat dish. A small thing, but the cheese naans are always VERY cheesy! Which is great. All dishes are beautifully cooked and presented. The flavors in all dishes are very well balanced, rich and complex, and so many flavours dance around in the mouth. The service is also great. It often fairly quiet, because it is off the main street, so I don't think most people know it is even there! Tucked away at the back of a little arcade is this restaurant. It was only a voucher that tempted…read moreus here, otherwise we would have never known there was a restaurant. It is open 7 days a week in the evening and lunch by arrangement. There is limited parking in the street but there is off street parking nearby. Six of us were dining on the Mt Everest Special Banquet and the voucher gave us nearly 40% discount. Apart from looking a little confused when the six of us arrived and getting the "have you booked?" ( we had booked online and received a confirmation email ), the service was excellent. We were given the offer of varying some of the mains and the level of hotness. We stuck with what was on offer. The only variation was that we did not get a choice of dessert. The first course of one pappadum each seemed a bit lean but followed with a variety of four second courses we started to fill up. There were five balti dishes for the six of us; 2xButter Chicken, Lamb Rogan Josh, Dal Makhani, Beef Vindalo. Dessert was one Gulab Jamun each. I suspect that we may have also got a 40% reduction is the amount of food that was on offer too; we may have come out even. The surprise of the evening is the excellent view over Tarban Creek with the glimpse of the Gladesville Bridge at the back of the restaurant.
