Red Earth Farm offers the best CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that I've ever heard of, let alone experienced. Basically, you sign up and pay in advance, and then every week for 23 weeks beginning in June you get delicious, farm fresh produce and, if you like, eggs, fruit, herbs, yoghurt, and cheese. N & I got a half share and an egg share last summer, and this summer we're adding a fruit share as well. A half share gets you 6 items each week and a dozen eggs every other week. The fruit share will provide a selection of fruits every other week as well. Both quality and convenience make Red Earth Farm special. First of all, most CSAs just give you whatever veggies they want. With Red Earth Farm, you go online each week and choose from the produce they're harvesting that week. Second, the food is all so fresh and delicious you won't believe it. You'll be eating your veggies and asking for more. The stuff is about 24 hours out of the fields when it arrives at your pickup location. And the eggs, which come from free range hens on a nearby farm, have the yellowest yolks and the best flavor ever. I've never tasted eggs like these. Red Earth Farm is my first CSA experience, and it has set a standard that will be hard to top. The produce, fresh and delicious, is grown with no synthetic chemicals and has been harvested a little more than a day before it comes to you. Best of all, you get to choose what you want out of their offerings. The surprise grab-bag of veggies was always what scared me away from CSAs because I have neither the skills nor the energy for improv cooking. But with this CSA, you can pick your produce for your weekly delivery and still plan your meals ahead of time. I have a partial vegetable share that provides a more-than- AMPLE supply for my husband and I each week. Best of all, I no longer spend an arm and a leg on overpriced veggies at Whole Paycheck, a store that I love, but which has produce prices that are flat-out ridiculous. This summer my husband and I decided to try a CSA for the first time. We decided to go with Red Earth Farm because you can pick your own produce from whatever they have that week. This is an awesome perk! We also liked that they offer tree fruit shares, local cheese shares, and yogurt shares. We got a partial share, since we are only 2 people and it's been the perfect amount. Our experience with the veggie portion of the share has been excellent. Everything has been perfect and the veggies are just delish! The offerings we had include summer squashes, onions, leeks, garlic, kale and other greens, peppers, tomatoes, and much more. The fruit share just started and so far it's amazing. Last week I had the best blueberries I've ever had. They were plump and sweet. The best part was how fresh they were. They lasted way longer in the fridge than any others I've bought. We also go some apricots which were fresh and yummy. The cheese part of the share has been excellent too. We have loved every single cheese they've given us. All local, all hormone-free, all from grass fed cows. E really enjoyed trying new cheeses and are excited to find out what is to come! So far we've had a smokey cheddar, conestoga, an herbed cheddar, and a Brie type cheese. There have been a few more I can't remember at the moment. Basically, you get 2 random cheeses every other week. Yum! The only share we are not so happy with is the yogurt share. While some is tasty, we've had a few issues with molding before the "best by" date and we find the whole milk yogurt to be runny. I must admit that the Greek yogurt is amazing! Every flavor is perfect and so creamy. If only they would change the best by dates to a week sooner. I wouldn't do the yogurt CSA again, but I'd go over to Wholesome Farms to grab some Greek yogurt, honey is the best in my opinion. Throw some Red Earth blueberries in and you have heaven. So to wrap it up, I highly recommend the veggie, tree fruit, and local cheese shares. There are tons of pick-up points for convenience too. The good: you can pick what you get, there are lots of pickup locations. Their bell and poblano peppers are generally good. The bad: the quality / freshness of the majority of the produce. Half of the time it's turning when I pick it up! I ordered two boxes of tomatoes last week, and half of them had holes or soft spots that turned moldy by the weekend (pickup is Thursday). I received a melon that was rotten when I got it. The kale and chard wilt very fast. I frequent farmers markets and know that this is not normal, unless the produce was picked nearly a week ago. This is my third year with Red Earth. Each year I said "never again." This year it was so bad that I wanted to cancel and request a partial refund halfway through the season. I am writing this review to help others think twice about trying this CSA (unless you are planning to cook everything the same day you pick it up), and also to remind myself how much I've regretted signing up. read more

Our family started the Red Earth CSA several weeks ago and we have been very happy. We love being able to choose what comes in our box. We have to make our choices by Sunday afternoon for a Thursday pick up. The quality of the produce has been excellent. We have gotten many delicious items including lettuce, beets, cucumber, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, snap beans and snap peas. As a family of four, if you're interested in trying a CSA, a partial share with Red Earth Farm is a great place to start. read more

It is nice that they let you choose items. I gave them an extra star just because of that option. However, selection is poor. At the peak of summer bounty the options are limited to tomatoes, potatoes and little else. In other CSA's I've been in this time of year is full of delicious options. Tomatoes are often picked too early and lettuce way too late resulting in poor texture and flavor. Fruit shares are pretty much peaches. No melons or other normal summer fruits. They are good peaches but the lack of variety is a problem for me. Also the eggs. I've had 3-4 eggs that were just plain rotten. It's a good concept but the execution is much less than I expected for the price. Will be trying out another CSA next year. read more

My family lives near Red Earth Farm. When I am visiting, I go to the farm on Fridays between 3-6pm and pick up my produce for the week. Everything is fresh, organic, in season and tastes great. They have your traditional produce and some unique kinds of produce which is always fun to try. Prices are great too! read more

I have been a Red Earth Farm CSA member for four years. It is an excellent CSA. I've been to the farm many times, and worked there for three summers in a row. Red Earth Farm is on a beautiful hillside in northeastern Pennsylvania, and the farmer really succeeds at his job of farming the land sustainably. One of the things that amazes me about him is just how high his standards are. Michael insists on a level of quality that is beyond what I would be happy to accept in my CSA box, and the process of inspection that each box goes through before it reaches your site is thorough. You box is individually packed by a farm crew member the evening before it is delivered, and then Michael or another crew member unpacks it to check that everything you ordered is in the box, before it is repacked with damp newspaper on top to assure safe travels.
