(spoiler-free review) I've done approximately 30 escape rooms (some with the same company) across five different cities. I am a stickler for immersion as there's nothing worse than being told a blank office with some pasted-on set dressing is a bank vault. All that self-aggrandizement to say: The U-Boat is among the top three escape rooms I've ever done. The theming is the best I have seen hands-down; nothing is an obvious thrift shop find somewhat related to the room. It all feels hand-crafted down to the smallest detail. My group was made up of a few first-timers and experienced players alike - incorporation of puzzles into the fantastic theming is unique, fun, and challenging for both types of players, even together. This alone is a pretty hefty achievement. It all adds up to what might be the top room recommendation for any Boston visitor. If you have not done an escape room, or just not been to Red Fox, you should rectify that ASAP. I'll be heading to The Heist (and updating this review) in the near future. MBA blather unrelated to the escape room experience: The owners spoke with us before and after - I enjoyed hearing about their experience with the greater Boston escape room community. I respect any owner/designer who can talk positively about any other room or owner/designer. There's a balance between competition and collaboration in a niche, design-heavy entrepreneurial sector like this and those who understand how to balance it - rather than stand aloof - are setting up themselves and their players for greater experiences. I look forward to seeing how other independent escape rooms step up their games in response to this great new entrant. read more

I've done probably 30 escape rooms at this point and Red Fox is easily among the best. The theming and set design are fantastic. There's an excellent blend of high-tech and low-tech. Most importantly, the puzzles are clever and unique, but never arbitrary. They don't waste your time forcing you to search high & low or send you down the wrong path with red herrings. It's a tricky balance that few escape rooms have mastered. I can't wait to come back to try new rooms! read more

We had a blast playing both the Heist and U-Boat this week! Lots to do in both rooms, with a fun variety of puzzles and great sets with some unforgettable moments in each. So far, the best escape room I've done in Boston/Cambridge so far --- great sets/props and atmosphere, puzzles are really great, and the location is easy to reach. I did the U Boat room with 5 other friends, we had lots of fun. The two stylistic things I kind of wish could be different -- if you're having trouble with the room, they sort of give you unsolicited hints throughout. Probably some like this, but it does take some of the fun and challenge out of it. Also, considering how realistic the set design is, they could sell the story a little better to make the experience as immersive and compelling as possible, but the intro was kid of like "this is an escape room, and this is how the this works etc." I want, "You are TRAPPED IN A WWII SUBMARINE AND IF YOU DON'T ESCAPE YOU WILL DROWN AND DIE MWAHAHAHAH" Ok not quite that, but you know what I mean. Set us up to make me think that we're really there!! Great place overall, definitely going to try other room. read more

Such an amazing escape room experience (we did "The Heist"). I'm no escape room aficionado by any means, but I've done a couple - and this was by far the most outstanding experience I've ever had. Overall, the escape room was superbly conceptualized, and puzzles were beautifully constructed, engaging, and (most importantly) well-aligned to the theme of the room. We were fully immersed in the scenario! We actually purchased this on the AirBnb website as an overall "experience", so as part of the package, Marie took us to the back room/workshop after we had completed the game to show us the nuts and bolts (literally) of how the puzzles were painstakingly designed and constructed. It was really interesting to hear first-hand how it all started, as well as all the effort that went into the ideation of each escape room, building the puzzles, and putting all these pieces together to form a cohesive, immersive experience for players. Truly a labor of love. I highly recommend paying Red Fox Escapes a visit and wish them all the very best in their business! I'll definitely be back to try out their other rooms once they've been completed! read more

This is was my third escape room, and easily the most fun yet! Totally immersive experience where the story actually embeds itself into the puzzles. There were a few rooms and the look and feel of each one made me mutter under my breath as we unlocked them. Fit and finish of the rooms, and how the puzzles related to the plot was what impressed me most. Several of the puzzles were easier to do together than solo, which I really enjoyed and helped everyone stay involved. Its not possible for one person to carry the team and hog all the fun! I went in a group of four, and we were pressed to get through it, but finished with a bit of time to spare. We needed hints in several places, but the solutions never seemed dumb or annoying. They were still fine-tuning the difficulty in a a few spots, so i wouldn't read much into that. We got a peek into their next challenge (under construction) and it was so very different, and also really really cool!! My genuine reaction was 'wow'. I cant wait to do it. We just had a fantastic time at this escape room! We've done around 10, and this is definitely one of our favorites. The puzzles are interesting and unique, and they're laid out beautifully. There's fantastic attention to detail throughout the room, and we became very immersed in the experience. Great experience! Marie and two other hosts are very running a very artsy place. I love it. The interior design of this whole place is modern and simple-less is more. Granted, this was my first escape room, but according to the people I went with this was their favorite, so it seems like the bar will be set really high!! We did the Museum Heist room. It was more puzzles and logic than hidden clues, which I really enjoyed, and the host did a great job of letting us struggle just enough before giving hints. The rooms were immersive and super fun, very well designed and visually interesting. My partner and I went with two other couples, and six people seemed the perfect amount. It was difficult enough that we had to divide and conquer the clues in the main room and while I kind of wish I had had more time so I could have worked on EACH of the puzzles (cause I'm a nerd), it was fun to split into different groups and work together in different combinations. All in all it was such a great experience, and we are excited to come back for their next room now that it's open!! read more

Hallie was such a great escape guide!! Her clues were very well written, such as to make us realize what were missing, without it feeling directed or forced. We ended with 1 minute left, with only getting a clue or two. It's well designed such that any team of any skill could solve their puzzles, with various numbers of helpful hints/clues. We went here today for a work team-building event and it was awesome! Marie was amazing to work with. This was my first 'escape room' experience and I had so much fun! I came here with a few colleagues and I really didn't know what to expect, but they did a great job of explaining the "rules" and helping us get into the right mindset for the escape room. There are lockers and a waiting room. We did 'The Heist'. The 5 of us were combined with a couple to make a group of seven. The rooms were great and well constructed -- everything was purposeful. There are also a lot of puzzles the group can split up and do in parallel, so my main concern of the 7 of us crowding around one thing to figure it out was eliminated when I saw this. But, it did require teamwork in a way that wasn't frustrating but fun/funny. The host was also watching us via a camera and giving us clues when she felt like we were really getting stuck. The whole escape room was designed masterfully. I was seriously impressed -- it hit the perfect level of challenging where we constantly felt like we were close but it wasn't so challenging we felt like giving up. The puzzles were constructed in a way where people with different talents could figure out the ones they were good at (for example, my colleague figured out one puzzle and I, even after he explained it to me, didn't get it, and vice versa). Just found this new escape room and loved it all. Great approach that we've yet to experience in our many visits to escape rooms. Plenty of puzzles that make you dig deep and work as a team. Great excitement and laughs for our whole group. Surprising twists and turns and extremely well executed mechanical elements. Came recently on a little trip to Boston, it was our first escape room and my boyfriend and I had so much fun. We did The Heist and even though it's available for a group up to 10, they made sure to give enough clues that we were able to escape with 2 minutes left. Best Escape Room I've ever done, by a wide wide margin. Marie (designer of the rooms) did a fantastic job not just with the puzzles but with the aesthetic as well. Our team opted to try the German u-boat themed room and it was an absolute blast. The room was quite challenging but not so much as to be frustrating; which itself is an incredible feat for an escape room. The puzzles, even when difficult, were highly satisfying to complete. The room was listed as appropriate for those more familiar with escape rooms and I would completely agree with that assessment. Overall, a great time and highly recommended!! read more

Best escape room I've ever done- the story, the environment, the challenges, all top-notch! We were a group of 8, ages 13 to 70, some escape room pros, some newbies, and we all loved it and were thrilled talking about it after. Wonderfully immersive, and just the right amount of challenge (and by that, it's not easy). Hints helpful as needed along the way on the screen. The puzzles and challenges and code breaking were never tedious, and always felt relevant to the story. There are some really compelling surprises during the hour which were awesome. Having a group of 8 was essential as there is much to solve at once in parallel. We solved it with just 3 seconds remaining. A beautiful and absolutely stunning escape room. I've done well over 30 escape rooms in North America, and this has got to be in the top 3 I've ever done. The scenery and setting is amazing. You're not sitting in some office decorated with a couple of props off of amazon or - you're in the story, immersed in the space, and interacting with the adventure. The puzzles are *clean* and smooth. Lots of great tech integrated with the room, and plenty of WOW moments that keeps the excitement going. It doesn't get any better than Red Fox Escapes!! That was one hell of a way to end a vacation in Cambridge, MA. Our experience was so great, I cannot wait until they build out the other rooms. The experience was truly unforgettable. We will definitely be back if we are find ourselves in Cambridge again. What a fun experience! We brought our 14 and 16 year olds with 5 friends for a night out. Marie was so accommodating to make our booking a private session. Overall, a "goldilocks" rating! Not too easy, not too hard -- just right. With younger and older teens and two adults, we were able to get everyone involved. There were many different types of puzzles that worked different types of brain power. We will definitely be back as they open up more rooms! read more
