A couple of quick heads-ups for fellow visitors: * ​If you don't have a State Park Pass, the entrance fee is $3. Make sure to bring cash, as the card machine was down during our visit. * Free parking is available, and there's a campground right nearby. * Definitely bring a hat, sunglasses, plenty of water, and solid walking shoes. Being the explore that I am, I used a combination of -yelp and Google to find parks near me. I was excited to find that there was a park 3 miles from my aunts house. I asked to borrow her car and away I went. When I arrived, I found a small parking lot. I noticed cut outs in the woods that resembles trailheads, but not many markings. I happened upon a trail head board, where I was able to pull a trifold brochure with map out of the case. From what I can tell, this series of foot, bicycle, and horse paths is maintained by volunteers. The trails are easy to spot, but not all have signage Or names. I noticed That's some of the posts had numbers, but that really means nothing unless you have a copy of the map. At some junctions, you are left to wonder where the path will lead and whom it is intended for. Summer designated foot only, summer horses only, and some are shared use. I used my Fitbit to track my GPS, so I can upload a map with my review, but I very much felt like Hansel wandering the dark forest. There are many beautiful trees, some great signage and points of interest for foliage in centuries. the brush is trimmed fairly well and it's pretty easy to find yourself alone on a path. During my run, I encountered walkers, the folks on horse back, mountain bikers, and even Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, Complete with ornaments. As I stopped to take a photo, I could hear something breathing nearby. It certainly was not a human. It sounded like a horse, but as I stood still, I heard no other movement and could see no horses, so I'm not 100% sure what the creature was. I read another review that said someone happened upon a coyote. Little red riding hood happened upon a wolf, but being Hantzel, I'm not so sure who was stocking me.Oh, and I found the witch's table in a clearing on a path, which let me know that I was indeed in the dark forest. The hours to the small park are 8 AM to dusk. There is no running water but there is one single Porta potty at the main trail head. They also provide doggy bags and a 5 gallon bucket that serves as the trashcan for the doggie Doodoo. The Porta potty was pretty well-maintained, the log shows that it's cleaned every 1 to 2 weeks. Being Covid, I was disappointed that the hand sanitizer was empty. All in all it was a pretty good run/walk in the woods. Be prepared for hills. There are many. My weaving loop in the woods was just under 3 miles, but I'm certain there's more to discover. I didn't travel all of the trails, in fact when I returned to the parking lot I discovered another path that had been blocked by a horse trailer when I arrived. four stars for the confusing intersections and lack of signage on many of the paths. Would I run this trail again? Yes. would I recommend this trail for someone to explore alone? Yes, if you are good at directions, not in a hurry, have your phone and GPS handy, just in case, and or if you bring plenty of breadcrumbs to drop along the way like Hantzel and Gretel.

Fort Worden is the quintessential WSP (Washington State Parks) experience. Set on an old military…read morefort, it features historic buildings, batteries, beaches, outdoor spaces, trails, and campgrounds for visitors of all ages. I hadn't been here in decades, but recently visited for a few fun days of glamping in the ol' RV. Sadly, despite securing a coveted campsite reservation 9 months ahead, we weren't able to book at the uber-appealing beachside campground; but we found the upper forest campground area just fine. The park itself is vast, clean, and well-staffed. It would be great for a day visit of exploring the beaches; but was also fun for a multi-day visit where we were able to ride our bikes around the park (and also, once, all the way to town!). We also enjoyed beers a couple of times at their on-site restaurant, Taps at the Guardhouse. And ate lunch along the water another day at their casual burger joint. If you're camping, they only take reservations (no walk-ins), and as long as you keep your camping receipt visible in your car, you don't need a Discover Pass during your visit. If visiting for the day, however, a Discover Pass is required. There's plenty of parking, and lots to do (including visiting a beautiful lighthouse). For less crowded beaches, their north beach area was a fun treat. We'll definitely be looking to book campsites at Fort Worden again!

The cabins are all situated in a way that you don't really notice the other guests. The owners are great, very nice and respectful. The first time there, Lavon gave us a tour of all the cabins when we were scouting places for my boyfriend's sister's wedding. She ended up choosing a place on the peninsula but my boyfriend and I returned here shortly after the wedding because we liked it so much. On the return trip we met the other owner briefly, she saw us out for a walk with our dogs petted them and then we didn't see another soul again for the remainder of our stay. Staying here is like staying at a family member or friend's cabin. It's homey, comfortable and feels lived in. Each cabin has it's own unique decor and feel. They are clean but not hospital sterile. If you're looking for an on-call front desk and team of staff waiting on you, this isn't the place for you. If you want a place to marvel at your surroundings, breath in fresh air, and enjoy some piece and quite with your dogs, you won't find a place better than this.

I think I was a small child the last time I visited Fort Flagler, so I don't remember much. It was…read moregreat to come back and experience again as an adult. Campsites go quickly at this place, especially in the coveted Lower Campground, which is so close to the beach there are tsunami warning signs throughout. The sites are large here, and although tents are allowed, they are most coveted by the RV crowd as all sites have power, water, and sewer hookups. (We also drove through the more rustic Upper Campground, which sits high on the bluff and is more sheltered. There were plenty of tents here, but weren't RV friendly except for the smallest units.) We spent three nights total, spending most of our time at the park enjoying the beach, bike trails, and (of course) the many historic gun batteries that protected the Strait during WWI and WWII. It's also about a 35 minute drive from Port Townsend, home to cute shops and restaurants. Reservations are a must if you want to camp at Fort Flagler. You can make them exactly 9 months ahead and they do fill up quickly.

The…read moremain purpose was to go to Fort Flagler and look at the fort remains and take in the scenic views which there was plenty of! The state park is also a retreat and there is quite a set up for anyone signing up for that and I can see why as the whole area is so peaceful and tranquil. The fort itself is quite a bit smaller as far as seeing structures go compared to Fort Casey on Whidby Island but this state park and it's history has it's own personality and charm. In some ways I like Fort Flagler better as far as peace and quiet goes as Fort Casey can get very crazy with visitors. The walking paths are quite manageable to take in the different batteries or what makes up Battery Row but they are dirt paths so if you go in the winter or spring be prepared for mud. Our Discovery State Park Pass came in handy for this stop and felt like it was put to good use for visiting this particular state park!

It was a nice play area for the kids, there appears to be a large amount of RV parking, there are a couple very acceptable port-o-potties, and most importantly there for some great rocky areas down by the water where the kids plus or minus you can go and explore! I've only been here when the tide has been in, but I can imagine what it is out, there are probably some pretty great tight pools. When we've been there, the small tide pools the form are great for looking for small fish, crabs, and see in enemies. It's basically going to the aquarium in real life! It takes a little bit to get here as it's about 10 miles off the main road, but the roads are nice and it goes quick. There's a more standard sandy beach just around the bend, but it's a private area and runs something like eight dollars a person to go enjoy it. We were more keen to hang out on the rocks after finding out!

First come only, and to get your site you must either log into the system (with limited cell service) or write your entire credit card info onto the form and leave it to be processed...no cash. Not so much a fan of that notion. We took the Heart o the Forest trail available from the top loop, although we didn't take it to the end. An out & back, narrow, with lovely trees. Overall a nice forested campground, with loads of sites of varied shapes and sizes and levels of privacy.

We arrived late on a weekday night after working a full day on the Eastside. This campground is first come first serve so we couldn't really plan ahead and had to hope there would still be something available. Even though we arrived only a few hours before dark we were able to find a really nice campsite nestled in the woods. There are several loops with nice sized camp sites for both tent and Rv camping. We found a lovely private site that was clean and free of litter and well maintained of debris. Each site is surrounded by gorgeous trees for privacy, mossy rocks, and peaceful forest views. After getting set up we enjoyed a restful and quiet night. The bathrooms were well maintained and there was also water for cleaning our dishes. Each loop seemed to have its own bathroom and garbage sites which was super convenient. We saw several deer, birds, and other little critters on our brief night's stay and look forward to coming back to visit them soon.
