Its an ideal place to head to for lunch or with a large group but I prefer to sit on my own, in the corner reading my newspaper and enjoying my pint of Harveys.

This traditional old country pub and restaurant is nestled in the Hampshire countryside by a stream near Alresford. Good dark local beers, from clean beer lines, great quality food and a dark, wooden interior make this a wonderful place for a date or an intimate catch up with a small group of family and friends. Long the haunt of local groups like the Young Farmers' and a favourite of fishermen - as the Itchen is one of the best trout streams in the country - it's a traditional dark and cosy pub, with roaring fires in winter and many nooks and crannies in which to settle for a long lunch. In summer there's a well-kept garden and food and drink are served under the shady trees beside one of the Itchen's streams. On recent winter's day, we had a table in one of the windows and our dog was allowed to sleep under it while we had an excellent meal that surpassed even previous visits. There was a first rate vegetable broth with crusty bread to warm one up, followed by the best, largest, plumpest plaice (and full of roe) I have ever eaten. There's a photo attached. A plate of traditional Eton Mess ended the meal with a touch of summer. There are two sittings for lunch - at 12.00 and 14.00 - and it's tempting to overstay if one takes the first, but the staff are charming and a gentle reminder is not given until long after the time has passed. The staff and proprietor Simon were so lovely and knowledgeable I ended up staying at the pub an extra two hours to participate in the weekly Sunday Night Quiz. Tip to anyone visiting The Greyfriar on a Sunday evening--you DEFINITELY want to stay for the Quiz! It's indescribably fun, and remains one of the top highlights of my time there. When I returned to The Greyfriar in March, I was welcomed like a local--Simon, Norma, and the staff I had met during my time in Chawton several months earlier all individually took the time to give me a hug and sit down over a glass of wine/pint of beer and and catch up on my life. Seeing that I was nursing a head cold, Simon took the time to personally make me a restorative hot toddy. But, then again, that's the magic of The Greyfriar. Because of the people who own and staff it (including chef Dan Rees, who cooked me a six-course meal for my birthday during my visit that was worthy of a ten-page spread in Food & Wine Magazine), the Greyfriar is more than a pub. It's a beacon of joy, feeding the soul and spirit as completely and as delightfully as it does the body. I can't wait to return to my "home" away from home again.
