I just moved into the DC area and have been going to Red Sun Nails every two weeks for my acrylic fill. This nail salon reminds me why I decided to get acrylics again! Everyone who works there does an amazing job on my nails- gel or regular polish, since I alternate. The pedicure chairs are brand new, place is clean, has tons of colors, and I've seen lots of people get their eyebrows done there too. I have also seen males getting manicures in the salon and they are attended to professionally. I've heard weekends are busy so I try to come on weekdays when I can. In my entire life, I have never been so dissatisfied with my nails that I opted out of tipping. Today, that almost changed. This place gave me the worst nail experience I've ever had. The techs were rude, short and sloppy with their work. I had a simple request : fill in and polish change on my toes. You would have thought I asked for something complex! I had 4 different people doing my nails because they are so short staffed. They had hidden fees that they didn't tell me about until the very end and I am not pleased with the final outcome. THEN, the credit card machine was broke. After I walked next door and paid a $4 surcharge, the machine magically started working again. I was in the neighborhood and I decided to run in to get my nails done. It was a horrible mani pedi. Firstly, none of my nails were evenly shaped and some were so much longer than the others. I hate doing this but I had to micromanage and literally tell the person to fix every nail and how to. Then when cleaning the nails instead of using alcohol remover the technician used her fingernails which lead to a build up of polish in my cuticles. TERRIBLE. It's been less than a week and they're ruined. Will never be going back. read more

Unfortunately, I have to take back my previous review. Kenny is still a great nail tech, and if you do go to Red Sun, I suggest that you wait for him. The last time I went here, I needed acrylic taken off of my nails. My nails were already crap, and the acrylic was old so I asked if someone could take them off with a nail clipper instead of me soaking my nails in acetone for an hour. They were extremely busy, so they told me I could soak them and when my pedi was done they would remove the rest of the acrylic. This was a lie. After my pedi was complete, I was left at a nail station with my fingers in acetone for an additional 45 minutes! To make matters worse, the lady that was helping me put the old dirty acetone that my nails had been in back into the bottle! She did this right in front of me like it was normal and sanitary. Gross! Agreed - great place, and I was thrilled at its appearance shortly after I moved into the area. There are literally no nail salons around Chinatown (aside from Golden Nails, cough cough) or Mt. Vernon, so it's awesome that the owners nabbed this venue. Since that time I've gotten roughly a dozen manicures/pedicures there (many of them with French tips), and I never leave disappointed. All of their technicians do a very meticulous painting job, and without taking 9 years or costing you your wallet. And -- it's OPEN ON SUNDAYS! The only downers (and no, they're not that bad): A) It's rapidly become very popular with people in the area, so there can be a decent wait during the busiest hours. Though on weekdays you can usually sit right away. B) The music is atrocious. Unless you enjoy easy listening hits - they have 1 CD on repeat..think "Killing me Softly" set to elevator music - headphones may be wise. read more

Okay...so after being a regular since they opened (when the customer service was awesome!) I went in on a weekday afternoon to get my nails soaked off and a fresh full set (I'm guessing they didn't notice me....or in fact just don't care about their customers as much as they used to).... so I sat in the waiting area....after 15 minutes the owner at the front table came over and asked me and 3 other ladies what service(s) we would like....I explained to him I would like my current nails soaked off (I run a residential and commercial cleaning service) so they had become old and I didn't want to risk infection. He sat there trying to explain to me why I shouldn't get them soaked off after he was unsuccessful he apparently got upset and left me in the waiting area. He proceeded to take the other 3 ladies as I assumed he would take care of me himself.... that is...until I realized I had sat there for 45 minutes....when I asked him what was going on he told me....in front of a full salon.....we are closing now...and asked if I can come back tomorrow..... I was so disappointed in the way I was treated I will never....ever support this business again.....instead I took a drive to my mom's salon - The Nail Spa and went to Vicki .....extraordinary service and professionalism...and they seem to have a great relationship with their clients (addressing many of them by name)...the pedi massage was incredible and they managed to not even soak my old nails off but clipped them within 10 minutes and recommended the gel mani.....I absolutely LOVE this place and they have made a permanent client out of me and my friends. as for Red Sun........they are a thing of the past!! read more

This is a relatively new nail salon, about a year old, and is the best I've experienced in DC -- at $35 for a mani/pedi to boot. The venue, tools, chairs, and decor are brand new and spotless. Great massage and scrub on feet. Meticulous removal of cuticle and polish application. The massage chairs are also really good ones. The technician was especially attentive to my nails drying long enough, made sure to have me pay before we began the manicure, and checked and sprayed my nails several times before putting plastic bags on my feet and then my socks and sneakers. Really great, relaxing environment at an unbeatable price. I will surely be back. read more

I normally prefer to do my own nails since I tend to destroy manicures within a few days, but I felt like treating myself on New Year's Eve. One week after visiting Red Sun Nails my manicure is nearly in tack with hardly any chipping and full coverage. Color me impressed! Even though I didn't schedule an appointment and the place looked busy, I was immediately assisted and handed over to a manicurist. I wasn't sure whether to pick a deep mauve or a teal that looked a bit weird in the bottle. The manicurist suggested that I try the teal (glad I listened!). It seemed like most of the people working and getting their nails done aren't in the mood to chit chat- perfect for me after working all day and recouping before a night out. If you need entertainment Red Sun has two flat screen TVs and plenty of magazines. The whole process took about half an hour. Plus, the location is convenient to the convention center. So happy I stumbled in and discovered this as my manicure spot! read more

the man , I think named Kevin (he's the only man working there) did my manicure. it was the worst manicure I've ever received. he was very very sloppy and he rushed through the entire manicure part which he took about 2mins to do, just so he can hurry and apply very sloppy polish. he gets annoyed when you start letting him know what you didn't like or what needed changing. He acted as if I didn't know what I was talking about when I said something wasn't right. Yet he went to the exact fingers to correct without me individually pointing them out, proving that he knew exactly where he messed up. at the end where they apply the oil, lotion hot towel to your hands was a mess as well. he applied one half of a drop of oil to be spread across all fingers. & Im not being dramatic when I say the amount of lotion he applied to both hands was the size of one of those tiny m&m's. my hands where white and dry as if nothing was applied after. i dont know why he works there if this is the work he consistently provides. this experience just proves my theory that men shouldn't be doing women's services. read more

This place is really nothing special at all. A friend recommended it to me, so I thought to stop by while I was in the neighborhood to get a pedicure. The decor is severely lacking, and they were playing Disney music. I was not at all impressed! My tech was friendly and nice, and gave a terrific foot massage. The compliments end there. She cut my skin with her cuticle cutters and did not do a good job filing my nails to make them even. What is worse, she got nail polish all over my toes! I will not be returning to Red Sun Nails. I just moved to this neighborhood. One of the first things I needed to do was find a great (reasonably priced) place to get a mani/pedi/eyebrow wax within walking distance from my house. Went through yelp and discovered this neighborhood gem! Great price ($35 for regular man/pedi) and $8 for eyebrows, I am hooked! I am now a regular here. Always walk-in and have only had to wait for 5 minutes at the most on their busiest days. Staff is reallly nice and they have a great celeb smut (OK, People, US, etc..) selection to read while you get your pedi . . . plus, they have recent copies, haha, what more could you want??!!?? read more

I've never visited this place before and was in dire need of an underarm wax as my regular aesthetician (near my job) was on vacation and I wanted to go somewhere closer to home. On Saturday afternoon, the place was relatively full but since I was accommodated so quickly and I choose a color and asked for a pedicure as well. The underarm wax was actually done pretty well for a lower priced nail salon. The pedicure was great too and I really liked their nail drying station (as in, both the top and bottom nail dryers nail were actually working). Overall, I'd say this is a great place to visit if you're looking for a low-cost wax or nail service--especially if you live in the Mt Vernon or Shaw area. read more

CLose to the home front and a good place to get your mani/pedi. The place is a bit small but they do have enough spa chairs and manicure stations to handle a good bit of traffic. The day I visited I had to wait 30 minutes but I was told that it was a fluke day. The staff seemed nice and the quality of the service was very good. And...my favorite part....the staff did not talk in their native language in front of you. Recall the Seinfeld episode? Well none of that here. I used to live half a block away from Red Sun Nails, and I'm regretting that I didn't realize how awesome this place is when I lived so close! About a week ago, in dire need of a mani/pedi, I looked up nail salons on Yelp to find a decent place nearby to get my nails done. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that Red Sun had such fantastic reviews! And rightly so. It's a small space, but set up very efficiently. They have 6-8 pedi stations along the right hand wall, about 8 manicure stations set up in the middle, and a drying station in the back left hand corner. As a previous Yelper noted, the drying station is awesome because the dryers work for both finger nails and toe nails. I showed up to get my mani/pedi and had absolutely no wait. They took me back for my pedicure right away. The woman who did mine was delightful. She was very attentive and precise, and very friendly but didn't feel obligated to make forced small talk with me, which was nice as I wanted to relax and read. I don't have much basis for comparison as I have only started getting mani/pedis very recently, but it was the best pedicure I've ever had. She took her time, was very thorough, gave me a foot, ankle, and calf massage. Very relaxing, and my toenails and feet were just perfect afterwards. She also did a fantastic job on my nails. Again, very precise and professional, and my nails looked great afterwards. The mani/pedi cost $35, which is comparable and reasonable for DC nail salons. And honestly they do such a great job here, I'd even pay more! So impressed with Red Sun Nails. I don't be going anywhere else for my mani/pedis from now on! read more

Initially, I was very pleased to see a good selection of colors, prices on par with other nail salons of this nature, and liberal use of sanitation products (sometimes you feel like you are going to leave nail salons with a pedicure and hepatitis, but not here), and massage chairs. However, I was displeased with the out-of-date selection of magazines (how am I supposed to keep up with the Kardashians?) which is crucial for nail salons and hairdressers. I was also somewhat disastisfied with the job the woman did in scraping the gross dry skin off my feet, and she also left a weird edge on one of my toenails--it is only a matter of time before that catches on something and the polish on that toe is ruined. Ultimately, I've had better pedicures for less money. That being said, with all of the other great reviews and its proximity to my house, I will probably give this place another chance (with a different technician and my own magazine). read more

The guy who did my pedi got rid of my man feet, gently and beautifully. I have never had a such a aggressive and successful technician. At $24, it's a steal. This place is pretty nice and affordable, however they have no idea how to manage the customers. On my second visit to the salon I came in and had a seat in the waiting area, as there is no sign-in sheet or anyone there to greet you. As I waited patiently a customer came in and said that she had a nail appointment. It was obvious that they were not specifically prepared for her, but she was taken care of quickly. Then another customer comes in and tells a nail tech that she wants a mani pedi. She then proceeds to wait next to me. When the next nail tech becomes available they seat her and tell me that they didn't know what I was waiting for?! It is your job to find out what services I need and to make sure that customers are treated fairly. I will never go back and don't recommend that anyone else do unless you make an "appointment". read more

Fantastic. Really, I could not be happier to find a new, clean, affordable ($25!) spot for a pedicure in my neighborhood. DC really lacks places like these and you can bet your sweet little butt I will be back. Again and again. They offer the full line of waxing, mani, pedi, etc.. and (as another poster indicated below) it is possible to put your tip on your CC if you let them know before they run it. Sounds like you can walk right in (as I did) on most weekdays but as more people discover Red Sun, the weekends will probably be busy. I really wanted to like this place as I am currently looking for my regular nail salon. On the plus side, the area is neat and clean. I eyed the tools and containers at each nail tech's desk, and they look like they're being cleaned on a regular basis. The staff is friendly and efficient. Additionally, the small building is located across from the Metro. On the downside, I felt as if I was rotated from one nail tech to another. I'm not sure if this was part of their regular protocol or they were just busy that day. One removed the gel fil on my nails while another did my manicure. However, my biggest peeve about this place was when the nail tech who did my manicure turned the UV light on waay too high. I noticed that it was warmer than usual but didn't think too much of it during the manicure. After I had left, however, I was horrified to find a tan line on the middle of my hand and my fingers noticeably more tanned than the rest of my hand! So needless to say, I am likely not coming back and still on the look out for a good nail salon. read more

Whenever I get a pedicure, I usually just zone out while reading some silly magazine. I guess maybe it's my fault then that I didn't notice that the person doing my pedicure didn't trim my nails at all. I mean, it couldn't have been ten minutes and she was already applying the polish. I get that it's a busy Sunday afternoon, but come on...The massage portion of the treatment consisted of her rubbing a very rough brush over the tops of my feet which felt the opposite of good. And again, this couldn't have been more than 2 minutes at most. ...to top it off, one of my toenails on my left foot has been hurting since I got the pedicure. I don't know what that means, and I really don't want to think about it. I gave this place two stars because it's cheaper than most places and they did a nice job applying the polish, but I won't be back. read more

I go to Red Sun Nails on a regular basis to do a mani-pedi or for waxing. I have not find a convenient place that beat there price in DC so far. I have to admit that depending on the time of the day (whether they are tired or not), the number of customers or the person who work, the level of service can vary, especially for waxing. I haven't had any issue with legs but I can't say the same about Brazilian and underarms. Overall I'd say that I'm satisfied in general. read more

I hope that I can bump this up to a 4 or 5 b/c this place is close to my house and the staff was extremely nice. That being said; I went on a weeknight, and it was still pretty busy so I'm sure they are popular. The price was okay, normal, I have lived in NY and Philly and am used to alot of quality $25-$30 mani/pedi locations so $35 (I paid $40 b/c I got french). Then, my mani was ruined within 3 days and I hadn't done dishes or any major work with my hands. Actually by the first night 2 nails had smudged ( I was under the dryer for an hour) thankfully it was french pink so it wasn't too obvious. Pedi was good at the time. For some reason the young lady who did my mani/pedi didn't understand that I wanted french pink not clear, so after explaining and showing she finally got it. But now, it's only been 1 week and it looks worn (again, haven't been doing anything major like swimming or going to the beach that would ruin it). For some reason, the mani/pedi took forever to dry at the salon.Not sure if they aren't using good top drying coat. Or machines aren't good. I went b/c so many Yelpers gave good reviews, so I will give this place another try and update later. read more

I'm giving 5 stars because the technicians are meticulous! I can't speak to the ventilation issue, I didn't notice anything. The lady nearly spoke 2 words to me and when she was clipping my cuticles she snagged part of my skin which made me flinch and it hurt for the next two days. Also, my hand/arm massage was less than a minute. She told me the French mani was going to last 10 days. Started to chip after 3 -_- Only reason they got 2 stars is because I came back and I think his name was Kenny fixed up my polish for free and did a pretty good job and he was nice about it! Fabulous spa pedicure. Great price, too. And they aren't pushy about "extras". I went here with a friend of mine while visiting DC - didn't expect anything out of the ordinary - but this place is the best. Kind, attentive service, and these folks are super careful about cleanliness, sanitation, and making sure your feet don't get overdone with the scrubbing (those of you who've had this happen before, you know what I mean). The place wasn't ventilated so it was really unpleasant to inhale all the nail fumes in there. I asked for a nail design, one from their samples that they themselves did, 3 people tried to do the simple flower and no one could do it. Plus their english wasn't that great so expressing what I wanted wasn't that easy. They were very nice though, gave a great foot massage, and I can't complain about the price. I was actually hesitant to post this... as I can be quite selfish when it comes to finding such a Gem! I loooovee this place!! Great service, extremely nice, clean, affordable and most importantly they do an impeccable job! I can go 3 weeks without ever experiencing a polish chip, nail break or lift. Definitely one of the best nail salons in DC! The ONLY negative is the street parking but the great thing is that it's located directly across from the Mount Vernon Square metro (green/yellow line) however I usually always find parking. Right price, easy location, clean. That's what I need in a nail salon. One complaint, my manicure chipped in three days. I expected as much for a $35 mani/pedi. For the record, the pedicure is still just as fresh as day one. You can tip on credit card, but you have to tell them you're doing so before they run it.
