First of all, if you're looking at funeral home reviews, you a) know someone who is dying and are making preparations; b) are making arrangements for someone who has died; or c) are looking into paying for and laying the groundwork for your own funeral. My condolences if a or b; I applaud your forward thinking if c, and respect your decision not to force those who will make your funeral arrangements guess, especially if you don't have a will. Required reading: look up the FTC's Funeral Rule. You may be grieving or feeling some other strong emotion, but you still need to do your due diligence. Shop around; you don't want to have regrets about something like this later. On to Redden's: Dave and Jim were the two I interacted the most with; they treated me with unfailing courtesy and patience, and answered my every question even on Christmas Eve. Though I'm not really religious, I know that holiday is important to some, and even if it's not, they need a break, too, perhaps more so than others, given their profession. At no time did I feel pressured (that's illegal), and neither of them made me feel like I was being taken advantage of, nor did they dismiss my concerns. Both of them were straightforward with me, and when I was lowkey panicking about how I could find someone who could handle those steps at their location on such short notice, they told me they'd match the 3rd party's price (see caveat below). Dave said they don't do headstones, but will give you a lead if you ask. You don't want to deal with a middleman anyway; give what would've been their fee to the maker. A caveat: the entrance to Redden's location is located down three or four steps below sidewalk level. If you buy a casket from a 3rd party like Costco or Walmart, Redden's is legally required to accept it, but they need two people to bring it in. You may be able to negotiate a price match; there's no harm in asking. If you want a steel burial vault, make sure the cemetery the burial plot belongs to allows it, and if they do, that they have the staff on hand to accept the vault and install it. Otherwise you'll either have to settle for a cement vault, which Redden's sells, or buy a plot in a cemetery that doesn't require an outer interment container. You may not have a choice in the matter if the plot is already purchased. Re: payment: Redden's takes all forms of payment (except electronic ones, don't expect to be able to Venmo or pay via Zelle), but if you pay by credit card, they won't help you pay the cemetery's opening/closing fee that way. You'll have to pay that separately in cash/check/money order, or deal with the cemetery directly. read more

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Redden's Funeral Home for their years of dedication to serving ALL those seeking services. Redden was one of the very few, back in the 80's and 90's, that would take care of those who had died of AIDS. My first partner died of AIDS in 1995, Redden handled his cremation and was extremely sensitive to me as his partner. Recently my second husband passed of pancreatic cancer and Redden once again handled themselves compassionately and professionally. I just came from there after escorting a friend that had lost their partner and once again I was impressed with their empathy, knowledge and direction. I was given the name of this funeral home by a visiting nurse service social worker. My husband died Monday November 9th 2020. All I needed was the body picked up cremated and returned. I paid for the delivery of the ashes to my apartment. I get a call around 3:00 p.m. today Thursday the 12th saying they were going to deliver the ashes now. I told them it was not convenient and he said well we have to drive by any way. I could not believe what I was hearing . I said that I paid for delivery of the ashes and I needed it done on my time frame. He said it was not possible. Needless to say I was shocked and very disappointed since I am still in shock over the death of my of my partner/husband of almost 50 years. All I could imagine is them asking me to come downstairs so they could throw the Box at me as they drive by. Very sad. Very unprofessional . Go elsewhere. We had a very good experience with Redden. I researched funeral homes while my aunt was in hospice. Their name came up as a recommendation several times. She wanted a very simple cremation. They were caring, efficient, and as noted in other reviews, there was no attempt at upselling. She wanted me to convey that the staff was very patient with her, did not push her to make particular decisions or push for the pricier options. The space itself was fairly large and accommodated our large wake guests nicely. The funeral director was cold and callous. He's in the wrong business! There "rules" were outrageous. Not being able to visit in the morning before the funeral mass is unheard of in the industry. No flowers brought to the Church (which was around the corner! All you heard from them was "we don't do that anymore". BUT IF THE FAMILY WANTS IT YOU SHOULD CONCEDE! I can tell you that due to a sudden passing, we were put in the unhappy position of having to plan a viewing for our dear one very quickly. This is never an easy or pleasant task, but the folks at Redden showed the highest level of professionalism, along with the utmost compassion and excellent listening skills. There was no pressure or upselling, only careful and thoughtful guidance in navigating the process, with great attention to detail. All these rave reviews for this crappy business are suspect. I used Redden's to bury my baby who died in fetal stages and for them to just pick up the body from hospital, put clothes on him, place him in a small wooden box (no embalming necessary) and transfer him to the cemetery I was charged $1,000. But I said ok because all the other funeral homes were charging similar so I figured hey they're no worse than the others. This review will not take that outrageousness into account. What really got me is that the guy at the redden's (Dave I believe is his name) 1st told us that we'd have to get the deed for the plot before being able to place a headstone and deed would arrive in a week. Said deed did not arrive from him after 8weeks of waiting (and multiple calls) because he or some other incompetent sent it to the wrong apartment #. His excuse was that he doesn't know how it happened cuz they have my correct address and something about he doesn't know how to work computers well. Then he tells me I don't need the deed to place the headstone which is opposite of what he said before. He said I should come pick up the deed after they get the duplicate. I agreed to pick it up instead of their mailing it to me as they should cuz they apparently can't even get that right. After reading the deed, my fiancé found out only my name is on it and not hers as well. Dave didn't give the cemetery her name too for some strange reason. Who does that? Where's his common sense. Now the cemetery is saying it'll cost $150-$500 just to add her name. This place can't give correct info and can't do simplest of things right. I'd suggest go elsewhere. read more

Reddens were very kind, compassionate and helpful in my darkest hour when my partner passed. My partner wanted a simple cremation, no fuss and no service and a biodegradable urn (which I later put out to sea). Reddens were very transparent and reasonable in their costs. This is one of the last family-owned funeral parlors in the city. On short notice, I had to handle the last arrangements for my aunt, and am glad I remembered that Redden's had taken care of her late husband. She had specified direct cremation with no services, and Redden's did not try to talk me into expensive options. They were low key, helpful, efficient, and most of all affordable. Outstanding in all respects. They handled my cousin's wake and service and a friend's. They then handled the direct cremation of an elderly neighbor without family several of us were caring for. The directors are very professional, caring, and know their job. The services were dignified and beautifully and flawlessly done. The prices are very reasonable.
