I'm a student at Claremont McKenna College, and I was recommended to Royal Barbers by a couple of friends. I've been looking for a place to get consistently good cuts, and I think I've found it. It's incredibly convenient (especially during the week between classes -- no line!), and the barbers know what they're doing. One thing I would suggest is possibly reworking the shampoo/hair washing station; there's only one and chair/headrest is a little uncomfortable. Nevertheless, Andrea gave me a great cut, and both she and the owner were very kind/engaging as well. Been here a few times. Had a decent cut the first time I came, horrendous the next 2. I felt a little discomfort during one of the cuts, but didn't realize until I got home that the barber actually cut into my skin with the clippers. So I've been going to this Barber Shop for probably the past 2 years consistently now. I first came into this Barber since it was convenient and on the way home from work. I remember getting my cut from Jimmy and he's a real cool guy always making sure his customers are well serviced and satisfied. Today was my first visit at Royal Barbers and I was already in a funk because my previous appointment at a different shop cancelled my appointment because it was cutting close to their closing hours. You can only imagine how frustrated I was. I've had bad experiences in the past going to just any barbershop (won't mention any names) so I was skeptical about going here in fear of having déjà vu but I needed a haircut BADLY because I have an interview on Tuesday. My barber was Aaron. He could already tell how tense I was from the beginning but he took the challenge. I wanted to get my undercut fixed (I've been trying to grow it out now since February. The last barber (different barbershop) did not know what an undercut was and chopped half my hair off and gave me a spiked skin Mohawk!) Aaron asked a lot of open ended and follow up questions to get get a clear understanding of what I wanted. He made sure he summarized what it was I wanted and made sure we were both on the same page. (That threw me off because it's very rare that a barber/hairstylist will do that) Aaron made small talk along the way to try and make me feel more comfortable in his chair. The ending results F***ing AMAZING!!!! This is by far the best haircut I recieved this year (since moving back to SoCal) I've officially converted into a returning client. First visit here with my son and it was a good first experience. Luckily I came by mid-week around 3 pm or so and, no wait. Steven worked on my son and Diana helped me. Diana was very talkative which was pleasant. If I had to complain about anything it would be the amount of time it took to cut hair. Man, I feel like I traveled back in time. A time when barbers were barbers. When they listened and made you feel like you were home. By happenstance my barber was Jimmy the owner. Man, what a guy!!! Super friendly, super professional. My hair was longer than normal but I needed a good clean up for a quinceañera versus a cut that would last long. Let me tell you, my hair looks fantastic!!! Felt really good to get that old East LA barber treatment. Jimmy was great but all the barbers around him seemed nice and looked like they knew what they were doing! You can't beat that hot towel service and razor edge up. I feel so good after visiting here. Can't wait to come back. I'd say the only con is the wait list got jumbled up and people that arrived after me went ahead of me.....BUT the barber Gods blessed me with Jimmy so I didn't mind the wait tbh. For 17$ + tip I Wasn't to impressed. For got her name but Latina next too the big guy with barber tattoos on his head cut my hair. She did not do a great job my sideburns were not blended my fade was a little different from the other side and she really did talk to me the whole haircut. The shop is really nice and the hot Towel was cool but I need a tight fade for 17$ + tip plus some barber talk so I can enjoy my experience. 6-14-15 I went to Royal's for a clean up and Jimmy really hooked me up!!! First off walking in the shop is very CLEAN and well organized. The theme is kinda old school and classic, but a good mix for the crowd. Kids from ages 5 - men in their 60's there's a barber for everyone. All of the guys and yes female barber cut hair extremely well. They talk to everyone and you always feel welcomed being greeted when you first walk in. The whole crew gets along *from a customer's point of view* which is professionalism. They never argue about "that's my customer" like other shops. So I assume the crew is close and respectful of each other. When you pick who you want to cut your hair they NEVER try to persuade you to get a different cut! All these guys cut hair great and take their time! And quite a few of them have gone to school for cutting hair. If you stop by for a cut you won't regret it! These guys know what they're doing! went in for a simple cut, apparently that's not an option at this place, cause I got a top notch high quality cut from Steven. I don't really know how to go about getting my hair cut, never really knew what to say or what to ask for. Didn't matter, top notch hair cut. Steven was precise and patient, down to the last hair sticking out of place. Dude doesn't just cut hair he makes art. I say that because i like drawing, for example, and when something doesnt look right in the drawing, i analyze it and break it down to see whats wrong with it until i fixed a leg that was too long or a finger that was bending the wrong way. I use my instinct. This barber cuts hair the same way, thats what makes him a prodigy, he's got the talent to back up his instincts. Some places charge you 20, and kick you out the door asap. Not this place, if youre paying a very reasonable price of 19$, its worth it, they earn it and work for that 19$ (don't forget to tip either don't be a dick). This place is an old school Barber shop. All the Barbers that work here are true artist. I get a full head and face shave. Full service shave with hot towels and beard oil. It will take a little longer for a cut here but that is because they are technicians. The nice thing they will take appointments and when you come in for your time, you can just slide right in. Jimmy the owner has worked very hard setting this Barber shop up in a classic style and has taken his time staffing the place with highly skilled licensed Barbers. Andrew, Jose and Jimmy all have mad skills, and I will not have another Barber shave my head or face. My son also gets his hair cuts here. Jimmy does a flat top that you can land airplanes on. The real deal barber shop. Great customer service, went in one night at closing but the onwer Jimmy took the time to give us the run down of the shop, it's services, and hours. Went in the next day and had to wait, but there's a reason you wait, the barbers take their time and do the job right. It's hard to find people that take pride in what they do and do it right. Manny was the one that cut my hair and although I was his last cut for the day (valentine's day) took his time and some how made me look good. I don't ever write reviews but I had a really good experience at Royal Barbers and wanted to say thank you to Jimmy for it. First of all he stayed open on a holiday when all other shops were closed. Secondly, Jimmy took the time with my hair and made sure that I was happy with my cut, he could have been just another person cutting hair and sped through it to get to the next customer but he really did take his time, and I'm extremely happy with the result. Lastly, I appreciated his honesty that even though they closed at 1 o'clock he said that they were going to stay open at 1:30 and only let a couple of people in at a time. I was the first one there at 1:30 and i was the first one to be serviced and it was well worth the wait. I called this place before taking my 14 year old son there and asked the price, they said $17. The person I spoke to said "we give a whole barber hot towel treatment with our hair cuts ". Was excited about that cause I know my son loves that. So I told him and he was expecting that. The guy that did his cut didn't do the hot towel treatment. I didn't know Until after cause I had to take an important call while he was getting his haircut. We won't bother going back, since they don't bother doing what they advertise. i never write reviews but this place.....I have been taking my son here for 2 years. they do great haircuts. only problem the wait times, but what do you expect for a great cut? the staff is extra friendly, they listen to what you want and always ask midway through is it ok so far.
