We had a wonderful half day with Captains Brian and Mark on the Spellbound. They were so professional and accommodating and we had a great day on the water. Entire crew was amazing and actually provided some great education whims it all as well. We ended up catching close to 20 fish in a little over 3 hours. Great trip and will definitely be back soon. I'm not sure how it could be much worse. My friends and I went for a bachelor party venture and the weather was supposed to be a possibility of showers. There was no precaution by the captain at all and we just went out to sea. 6-7 foot swells with the entire boat rocking and 1 guy getting sick. I would have expected the captain to advise us at least beforehand so we have an idea of the weather conditions and concerns. He didn't. Then, 4 of us made our way to the top deck and the captain repeated made outlandish racist remarks the entire time. He made all of us extremely uncomfortable and even asked one of our guys why he was wearing a BLUE shirt!!! Some of us are from GA and he asked us why Georgia turned blue!?!? We didn't catch much of anything and we ended the trip early because of the weather and not to mention how uncomfortable we all felt. I feel bad that this man is so small minded but political views and racist comments don't belong in any form with a paying customer. We should get a refund for that nonsense. read more

I chartered a boat with these guys because my husband has just been dying to go sea fishing. So we did half a day ($650) on the Spellbound. The guys that ran the ship were absolutely fantastic, they were personable and very knowledgable (Capt. Manny, and Mike the first mate). They got us completely set up and did there best to make sure we caught something. We only ended up getting one fish (even though there were 4 of us), but it was a big one. ~35 lb Amberjack. They tried trolling, kite fishing, and finally we went to the shipwrecks to get the fish hiding there. I guess there are a few hundred shipwrecks in the area to create a reef for fish. Tons of fun, and beautiful surroundings. The boat is awesome too, upper deck for a great view, lower deck for fishing, cabin for warming up and eating lunch, and there's a bathroom on there too. They told us that the best time to go is March-April-May, so we were kind of in the off season for fishing, but it was still a great time. I would recommend booking the whole day if you really want to get a fish, or just stay on the water longer. The time goes faster than you would think. read more

This was my first time sea fishing. We went we a group from work for a team building event. Of the 15 of us, only 3 didnt catch something. We got numerous Kingfish, a tuna and a 6 ft Golden Hammerhead... WOW! Jay and Hunter were awesome, they told us about the area on the rise out, made sure we were all superbly taken care of. Jay knew exactly where to go, Hunter setup the lines and did lots of hard work to pull in our fish. The boat was fantastic. Air conditioning and plenty of shade. I was afraid I was gonna end up a crispy critter even with lots of sun screen, but that didnt happen. If you are in Miami area, I highly recommend this team. read more

As a local to S. FL, I've done lots of fishing and been on a few charters. This crew was not good. Capt' went out maybe 1 mile tops at about 3 knots (obviously to conserve fuel). He claimed it's "a myth" to go farther out to get more fish (BS when you want to find Dolphin). Spent the first hour and a half getting out to troll with 2 outriggers (they didn't catch anything). Four other lines were out and we caught 3 baracudas (which you don't eat) and 1 Mackeral and one Bonita. The capt' and mate barely made an effort to track down fish, just idle'd around, not looking for Dolphin spots. Mate was slowest at rigging reels I've ever seen. Mate ultimately gave ONE rod to vertical fish...there were 9 of us on the boat! ONE rod to drop a line. ONE. It was very clear they didn't want to burn fuel. Mate was slow, lazy, unfriendly, and clearly didn't want to be there. The last charter we took, the capt. beelined it to a spot and we were on Dolphin for 2 hours. Not a good charter service at all. As a south florida local that has been fishing my whole life, I have fished on many charter boats throughout the years. The Spellbound has become my go-to and is by far the best overall experience. I have been fishing with both Capt J and Capt Manny and they are both knowledgeable and professional Captains, committed to providing a great experience to their guests. We recently took a team from our office for an "off site" meeting. We charted the boat for 3/4 day and had a blast. It was great to have a boat that could handle a larger group of 18 (I think they can handle more), with plenty of space for everyone. We caught 2 Sailfish, 6 Mahi, 3 Golden Tile fish and 2 giant Amberjack. The crew hustled from the moment we left the dock. We started trolling, dropped some deep lines and then live baited with kites. They have a bag of tricks for finding the fish. It is not often that the experience lives up to reviews. In this case it did. We had an amazing experience. Brought my three sons and this trip made them fall in love with fishing. First the boat is so comfortable. It has an air conditioned inside cabin and upper covered deck to hang out. Second the crew was really customer focused. They really tried to make our experience awesome. Captain Jay did a great job finding where the fish where. He really is an expert guide. Solid 4 out of 5!! Who doesnt like fishing besides chicks? This is something I feel every guy needs to do at some point in their life. I had never been deep sea fishing before and aside from the huge boat....giant fishing reels, and the tough swimming fish that we were trying to catch....it is a lot like normal fishing. This is for the Spellbound boat for Captn Jays Deep Sea Fishing Miami. Our captain was awesome!! Manny was his name and he was one of those captains that had seen and heard and done everything throughout his life. It was cool just to sit there and listen to him tell his stories. There was a group of 9 of us and our goal was to make sure everyone caught at least 1 fish. We ended up catching a ton more fish than that. Our first mate was a hard working guy, constantly fixing and baiting the reels. We had 4 or 5 going all at once. We only booked the boat for a half day trip and i think that we had plenty of time. These guys had the most competitive prices and they allowed more than 6 people on the boat. Most of the other places I researched only allowed up to 6 people and then you had to reserve another boat. So this place is great for large parties. Next time I would want to go and try and catch a large Marlin or Sail Fish. Good Times!!! read more

Not sure how the experience could have been any worse... 1) before we even got on the boat, the "captain" was already asking how we were going to pay for the tip... made it very uncomfortable; 2) group paid for fishing "training" (added cost of $1000)... there was no training... in fact only 2 of the 6 folks in the group even touched a fishing rod; 3) WE CAUGHT ONE FISH IN 3 HOURS (and the fish was not even an edible one); 4) the ride was choppy and there was minimal effort by the captain to go out further so that we could potentially catch a fish... you would think that the "captains" would have a good idea of where to go to catch fish; 5) the same guy who kept pushing for a tip ended up sitting in the cabin when we started cruising the shoreline and played on his phone (definitely earning his tip); and 6) no surprise, as soon as we dock, the same guy just turned and stared at the group and asked who was going to give his credit card so that he could get his tip... Quick recap: So group paid $2400 (tip not included) to drive around in a boat for 4 hours, not get fishing instructions, not catch any fish, all the while getting harassed for a tip... These guys were great! We went out on the Friday afternoon trip and couldn't have asked for more. We had a few bites right when we got in the water and later on caught a Barracuda and a Hammerhead shark. Even if we didn't catch anything we learned a lot of different techniques and got to spend the day on an excellent boat with an excellent crew. Would definitely book again. read more

For clarity, I am a white dude who was in Miami Beach at a bachelor party with 3 other white dudes and 4 of our closest brown friends. Deep sea fishing was supposed to be the highlight of our trip and turned out to be the worst experience we had in Miami Beach. Once we were on the boat and headed out to fish, Captain Manny, unsolicited, started discussing everyone's favorite subject, politics! We tried to move on from the conversation so we could enjoy the fishing but he refused. Shortly after, he began making overtly racist comments one after another. We were absolutely floored that he was making these comments at all, much less that he is hosting paying customers on a $1700 private fishing tour. All of this happened in the first 30 minutes which completely ruined our trip and made all of us uncomfortable. To make matters worse, it was absolutely pouring on us the entire time but Manny didn't use 'Captain's Discretion' and cancel the trip. And the customer-last mentality continued after emails to Captain Jay (owner) and Kim have gone unanswered. I sent a polite and candid email to Captain Jay to let him know that one of his employees (Captain Manny) is conducting himself in a manner that should be concerning to them. And....no response... Stay away from this company. There are plenty of charters in Miami so no need to subject yourself to a racist. read more

Girls outing... Booked the trip before we knew it was only going to be 40 degrees that morning!! But Manny and Mike were prepared... They heated the cabin and it was a very comfortable outing. We had a Great Time! Mike and Many are very professional and they know where the fish are! All 7 of us got to pull in either bait or a large fish! Mike was continually giving us information about fishing and the general area. They even recommended great local places to eat in Miami. The boat is more than large enough for a big group ... We ended up keeping a Snapper that we Pan fried that night ... Absolutely Delicious!!! Thanks again Mike and Manny for a great experience .. We'll be back! read more

The fishing was great until the captain and mate were trying to bring our trophy onboard and instead let it go. They also talked down about other boats we had been on. At the end of the trip, they brought out a calculator to figure out what the gratuity would be. It's not a tip if it's figured and relayed to you that this amount is what they want. On top of that the captain took half of the "tip" for himself. Needless to say, we will not be back. read more

Good guys, bad fishing Capt Manny and Jay. We spent half a day on the water, didn't catch anything! From the moment we got on the boat, they started hedging that we may not catch anything. Spent four hours out deep sea fishing without catching a deep sea fish. Giving two stars because they were good guys just didn't know where to fish. We had four kids on boat, and they were just sleeping. Thats a steep price for a nap! To make things worse, we came back and every other captain on the docks was coming back with plenty of fish. My business partners and I were down in Miami and looking to go deep sea fishing on a Thursday afternoon. Even though I called at 11:30am and they were scheduled to be headed out at 1pm, Jay was able to accommodate us in his boat Free Spool Too, which you will see on his website. When we got to the dock, we were greeted by Captain Brian and Danny. Both these guys were awesome from the start - took our drinks and had a cooler of ice ready for them and stowed all our food for us. Then we were off. We motored out of Haulover Park and to the first reef off the coast where Danny threw a line in the water and seconds later yanked it out with 5 bait fish attached to it. I've been ocean fishing many times and never seen anyone hook fish that fast. Once he'd pulled in a bunch of bait, we were off to the "deep blue" to see what we could find. Danny rigged up four reels and we trolled for a while without a bite. Then we pulled them in and headed further south where Danny put out two kites. Kite fishing is awesome! I'd never done it and it's great b/c you constantly have to monitor what you're doing. Fishing can get a little boring, but having to keep an eye on the kite lines in 4-6 foot seas was some great action. Unfortunately the fish weren't biting into the 3rd hour. We didn't really care because we were having a great time with Brian and Danny, but obviously it's nice to catch at least one when you go out. I climbed up to the pilot deck with Brian and within a few minutes spotted a glint of silver in the water racing toward our bait. Brian saw it too and called out, "LEFT SHORT! MAHI ON THE LEFT SHORT!" And sure enough that fish snapped up the bait. Danny grabbed the rod, set the hook and we reeled in an 18 lb Mahi aka Dolphin Fish. It was damned exciting and such a beautiful fish! Within 15 minutes of re-setting the same line, the bobber on the left short darted away from the boat, but our live bait on that line had been pretty active since we switched it out after the first fish. It didn't feel like there was any tension on the line, but the pin on the kite line popped and Danny grabbed it. There was something on the hook. He handed me the line and I reeled in our second Mahi of the day!!! After that we pulled in the kites and headed for the harbor. Back on the dock Captain Brian filleted the fish with expert precision. We climbed in our car with a bag full of Mahi, drove home and had a great feast. I highly recommend Jay and his guys. Great crew that are very knowledgable, great times and we caught some fish!!! read more

We had 11 people aboard the Spellbound for my bachelor party for a full day fishing trip. Within 45 minutes after leaving port the excitement began catching approximately 25 tuna. At times we had 3-4 people reeling in fish. Afterwards we went out a little ways to go shark fishing and bottom fishing. We were able to reel in a silky shark that was about 9 feet long. Overall this was the best deep sea fishing experience that I have been on and I will request to be with Captain Manny the next time I am back in Miami for a another deep sea fishing trip. Bait and switch job. We paid these guys $1500 for just 4 hours of 'deep sea fishing' We were 8 adults and 4 kids and they charged same for kids as adults. The captain, Manny, was extremely arrogant and rude and made us pay his tip (20%) up front. He didnt ask a single question about our experience fishing and just looked at us as if we were dumb tourists. He seemed in a bad mood and spend most of the time on the phone or radio talking friends about guys inspecting boats the previous day. He spent little time on 12 customers. Zero customer focus nor manners. He took us about half a mile out and then over to an area that was polluted with other boats included research and group charters. Not a good start. As we were families with kids, we politely tried to make the most of it and inquired and asked whether we would use live bait and go out further, but the captain insisted on keeping us a mile offshore (clearly to preserve gas and increase profit) so we just cruised around off the cost of North Miami beach. No hunting for fish. No deep sea as we had asked (and paid for). It was clear that we wouldnt catch anything in this area so when 3 o clock hit and everyone's patience was thin, one of our friends said for the sake of the kids to stop by for a swim in the spot that was right next to the marina where the boat is kept. The captain acted as if this was a big ask and even murmured something about an extra cost...though it was literally on the way back and littler right in front of the Haulover marina! When we got back we complained to Kim and asked her why we had this experience even though we expressly asked for deep sea fishing (i had asked if the boat goes out to gulf stream which is found several miles off shore, not a half mile off which is as far as we went. I had also asked if they use live bait. Having gone deep sea fishing many times before, I know what to expect and this was clearly not deep sea fishing. To make matters worse, the owner, Jay, called to lecture me at one point arrogantly pointed out that he was taking his precious time to speak to me as if he was some big shot and I was some nobody. He even made veiled threats as if paranoid we would cancel payment on our credit cards. Class act. While I agreed with him that one cannot guarantee catching fish, it is very clear to any reasonable person that one cannot catch fish if one doesn't try (the captain did not try hard at all) and its impossible to catch deep sea fish if you don't go out into the DEEP SEA! Same logic as you cant hunt deer in your backyard. We even asked him to return part of tip and said 10% vs 20% would be fair and our friends also reported that they overcharged us by $50 despite being super clear on the total amount. In the end they only returned less than 1% of the total! The cherry on the cake was when Jay the owner texted me today asking to take down a review...I hadnt written my review yet...this was surely one of our friends but it stands to reason how incredibly immoral some people are to think they can rip people off and then try to bully and silence them! I work as an Associate Producer for a NYC production company, and we just went out to Miami to shoot a sizzle reel for a major cable network. We booked Captain Jay's 57 foot charter fishing boat to take our talent out and have her improvise with the crew. Jay was kind enough to make my life easier and sort out all of the complicated filming details. He even offered to be a part of the shoot, as he has had a good amount of experience in front of the camera. My crew had an amazing day, and even managed to create the story of "the fish that got away", adding character and intrigue to our project. Was with my son Jack on monday- caught the king fish we having mounted- -- had a great time,Jack can't stop talking about it. Wifey cooked up the snapper we caught monday night at our condo and it was awesome, not one bone and great tasting. We could eat it every day. Being from colorado never had fresh fish like that. My son and I just came back from fishing with Captain J on 2/18/13 1/2 day, and Fishing with Captain Manny on 2/20/13 full day. With Captain J we got to our first location and within 3 min. I here "BIG FISH OFF THE BOW" The crew was in motion and within 25 seconds they had a 55" bull Dorado on our line. My son reeled it in and we are having it mounted. It was fantastic With Captain Manny we caught 8 Dorado, 2 huge barracuda, 4 big file fish, and an 85" hammerhead shark which we are having mounted. Went deep sea fishing with Captain Jay and mate Sean. Caught 10 little tunny on the way out to deeper water. Jay really knew the area, the currents, and how the water temp would affect the fish. Other boats that launched at the same time hardly caught any fish. We decided to take a chance on Jay's guiding expertise and go for some better fish (little tunny is fun to catch but considered a trash fish and mostly used for bait). Out in 1000 ft deep water Jay spied a bird (a good sign there was fish) and a pallet floating in the water. He quickly steered us over and we discovered a large school of keepable sign dolphin (not porpoises but what restaurants call Mahi Mahi). Every time we put a line in the water we had a fish on within seconds. We kept at this for almost an hour before the school moved on. Never had this much fun fishing in my whole life (fished extensively in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, charter fished in Alaska, New Zealand). I attribute our success to the excellence of our guide. Spellbound is a clean, modern boat. Would go again. Highly recommended! read more

went on a private chartered experience on the spellbound and could not say enough about the trip! the staff were extremely accommodating for our time constraints and got us onto the water very quickly. we pulled in nearly a dozen tuna in a few hours on a clean, comfortable, spacious boat and were easily able to maneuver all 10 of us around the back deck. Captain Manny and Mike were awesome, and kept us dry after cruising through a downpour on our way home. they cleaned a number of fish for us to eat later that evening. would highly recommend to anyone in the area looking for a great fishing experience! read more

Captain Manny and Chris were awesome. My business partner and I chartered these guys for my first ever deep sea fishing trip. The weather wasn't great for the first couple hours, but these guys were dedicated to helping us catch fish even when conditions weren't great. After retooling and going deeper we got something large on the line. For the next two hours, Manny kept us locked onto our unknown catch by constantly positioning the boat, Chris made sure my line was reeling in properly (he was also pretty cool about handling the puke bucket for me LOL!!! sorry dude!). So for two hours these guys were total pros as a monster hammerhead shark was giving me a crazy workout. We didn't even know what was on the line because every time he ran out the line, he was headed straight down. But we did get him up to the boat and when we did, we realized that we had a legendary fish. 15 feet and 1000+ pounds was our best guess. I am sure the video will make it onto the website so you can judge for yourself. No doubt this guy was a monster. Anyway, I give all the credit to these guys for hitting the spot, dropping the right bait down at 350 feet and then making sure I didn't let that bad boy off of our line. On a work outing (from conference) where company chartered several boats for deep sea fishing. Didn't mind that no one caught a thing. Perturbed by the "mandatory" gratuity . Crew said hello and disappeared for 3 hours. Did not offer to help, change bait, provide local know-how, they were totally disengaged. It's as if they knew their tip was secure from corporation and they didn't need to work for it. Would have enjoyed some local commentary and again, didn't mind not catching a fish. Beware! What a great time! Went out for an early half day and weren't sure what to expect. Ryan was wonderful! He knew we wanted to participate as much as possible and he had us baiting the hook, setting up lines, and enjoying every minute of the day.
