I was looking for a lawyer to help me with a long drawn out family law matter. I got the…read morerecommendation through my workplace EAP program. Cohen Highley gave me a newer lawyer Terrah Smith which was fine, her price seemed reasonable. I payed the $4000 retainer figuring I was about 2 months from trial how much could it possibly cost. Terrah showed up for one court date which lasted all of 20 minutes, she didn't do what I wanted but fine she's the expert. Its important to know my child was in an abusive situation and even the children's lawyer recommendation was that the father should not be left alone with the child for any amount of time. That court date cost me about $500 seems reasonable. She did have her assistant " who costs less hourly" organize my paperwork which was probably the best service I got from this ordeal. I didn't have much contact with Tereah besides emails I thought were nice, checking in to see how things are going. Or asking me to call the office, all great until I get a bill at the end of the week. A few weeks before my trial Terrah said she was passing my case to a coworker of hers who was less pricey as her prices went up almost weekly. I met with her coworker who told me I needed to put down another $10k retainer for trial which I was not told about in the beginning and that my original retainer had run out. I was so shocked and feel like I was robbed. Terrah did not take my child's best interest into consideration, she appeared not to care and she was not up front with her fees. I would not recommend this law firm nor would I ever go there for any service again. On a plus side, the lady at the front desk is very kind and compassionate.

There was no attempt from the lawyer and his team to come forward and explain why there is a discrepancy between the signed document and the cheque received (I am not sure if this is even legal) The only explanation I received (after I asked several times) was that there were additional charges. Why and what kind fees I was charged is for them to know and me to find out. Other aspects of their business to be aware of: Final disbursement charges were almost double that the initial estimate (on a regular, no issues- transaction). Expect to be charged in excess of $450 for: photocopies (even though everything is digital), postage, fax, software, long distance calls (why?, in my case all parties were from London ON), certified check (I received a regular one) plus more

They charge $60 for consults, so I had some questions planned in order to maximize the time allotted. I arrived at 2:45pm for the appointment and it is certainly a busy office. Good for me perhaps as it seems a lot of people use this firm. At 3:45pm I was brought into Michael's office to start our consult. No offer of apology for the delay. I outlined why I was there and was told one of his associated specializes in those kinds of matters. He then proceeded to read off of a print out from the US Homeland Security site about what steps had to be taken etc. etc.. So I asked bluntly what their fee of $565 ($500 + HST) gets me and why should I hire them. No answer. Just some "complete these forms, bring them back and one of the staff will type it up and fill in any gaps". He took some paperwork I had, made copies and then escorted me out to the desk to pay the fee. I was so flustered by then I just paid and said I'd let them know by Monday if I was going to retain their services. On Monday I went back to get the paperwork taken (as some were original copies) and the receptionist seemed confused as to why i would not hire them. I had to ask for the original papers multiple times before they were handed over. So lesson learned on my end; I should have left well before waiting 45 minutes for a useless consult, PLUS I should just not have paid and walked out after realizing just how useless it was.
