The first thing that sets Referral Driving School apart from most other schools is their 5-lesson approach vs. a 3-lesson course used by most other programs. You can see a description of each session's objectives at their website. The lessons were spread evenly throughout the six months; at the time I thought the first couple should be front-loaded on the schedule, but I guess the spacing puts the onus on the parents to get in the habit of doing parental teaching early. Second, they handled everything having to do with the DMV driving test including scheduling the exam and use of their car. I'm sure it's not very difficult to schedule the driving test, but being able to avoid this hassle was very convenient. Thirdly, you may notice a theme in many of Referral's Yelp reviews. I rode along on 3 of my son's lessons with Daniel Tran and can confirm what other parents have said. Daniel is organized, knowledgeable, and encouraging, and his experience with new and young drivers translated well in my son's training; we have a perfect score on a rainy day to prove it. We had the pleasure of having Grant be my daughter's driving instructor. He has a 99% driver's test passing rate . The whole process from studying for the written test to obtaining a permit all the way to the very last lesson and successfully passing the dmv test (the 1st time) was very streamlined. . Not that I was a total helicopter parent but I did join in on all the lessons so that I can help my daughter with her driving skills as she drove for practice. I myself learned some excellent driving strategies, techniques and skills that I clearly forgot or (didn't know) since it had been a long time since I first got my license. What I agree 100% is how the student driver is just as important as everyone else (if not more) on the road and teaches them to be safe as well as be a defensive driver. Grant taught how to avoid dangers on the road by: Planning ahead for the unexpected. Be able to control speed (cruise control) To not expect other drivers to do what we think they should do and being prepared to react. Be alert for pedestrians or bicyclists and always scan the roads. What we did appreciate is his quick response via text if we ever had a question. He explains in detail of the rules and laws of the road . Compared to other driving schools he's a smidge more $ but you can't put a price on safety and quality. He accepts Venmo for payments. It's hands down the best driving instruction you'll pay for. He tells you exactly what you need to do and sets everything up with the dmv. You use his car for each lesson and the driving test. We had very good luck with the Referral Driving School over 10 years ago with my older two children; so we went to them for my youngest recently. I am sad to say the our experience was not good; the instructor was never on time; she cancelled more than once; oddly; her chosen times were always early on Sunday mornings. Her biggest failing though was the day of his first behind the wheel test; she said she would arrive an hour early to take my son to the exam; 45 minutes later, she still was not here and not answering her phone, and he and I went ourselves to the exam and were 15 minutes late for his appointment. He did not pass; unlike my other two children who DID pass after there lessons from this school. I of course did not go along with the lessons; but I can only say that her instruction was not good, otherwise he would have passed like my two other children did. From reading the other reviews here, my advice to anyone would be to find the positive reviews where an instructor name is mentioned and ask for that person. We had a wonderful driving teacher, Daniel, who was really great with my daughter - great instruction, gave her notes, nice communication with us, and was easy to reschedule conflicts.
