If I lived near this place, I'd be broke. It is fabulous, and I can't recommend any store any more than this REI. The staff is extremely knowledgable. We are planning a hike to Mount Kilimanjaro, and everytime I purchase something for the trip, I am introduced to a staff member who just went there. They tell me all sorts of things that help me plan my trip - some about the items I am purchasing but many more things about the trip in general. It really benefits REI to have staff that engage in the same activities as its customers. REI has a membership program so I get rewarded for spending more. What better incentive is there than that? I have loved every item I have purchased there. When I bought a back pack (on the advice of someone who had been to Mount Kili and showed me the pack his wife used there), I thought I had problems with it. I brought it back after using it but was told how to adjust it to address the problem, and encouraged to use it again since I liked everything else about the pack. Then, I was told that if I still didn't like it to bring it back and under the generous return policy, REI would take it back. Enough said. I re-used the backpack and the adjustment made all the difference. I didn't have to return it, but knowing I could gave me peace of mind. When I bought new shoes, Jody showed me how to tie them to keep my feet happier. I returned to the store a week or two later,and asked one of the staff watch me tie my shoes. He did so, gave me his blessing and showed me a few more tips to make my laces even tighter. I love REI but it's getting more and more like a retail store every day. The long time employees know but they are powerless to stop it. That said, this is the place to go for outdoor sports gear. The people who work at REI are generally pretty knowledgeable or they send you to who is. The Conshohocken store is far superior to the fancy new King of Prussia store if you're serious about your outdoor adventuring. read more

Stopped in 4/1/11 to get some parts for my Yakima roof rack. The cashier applied a coupon, that I didn't even have, and my REI membership dividend, knocking off a good chunk of the total. I really can't say enough nice things about the people in the store. It has the most accommodating, kind, and courteous staff. For example, I went to pick up some rain pants for cycling. I could not find my size on the racks, spoke to a sales person saying, "on line they said they were in stock..?" His reply, "OK, well then they must be here somewhere!" He searched high and low for five minutes and found them for me, even after me saying not to worry about it, they were pretty busy. The same treatment another time when I was looking for a particular thermos for coffee! The mechanics in the bike department are great. For someone like me who is trying to get a handle on doing some wrenching at home they have a great stock of tools and the folks there are encouraging about it. Lots of area shops lean towards giving grimacing and belittling smirks. It's care like that, that keeps me coming back. read more

Everyone knows REI is tough to beat in the customer service department...but fitting ski boots tests at another level. Dan took my previously purchased REI boots (3 years ago) and made some adjustments without the slightest sense that he was wasting his time. Even though I didn't buy new boots, I made some other purchases and know that it's always going to be a pleasant experience shopping at the Conshy location. I've been a long time member and shopper at this store because saving a few bucks online isn't worth it...you can't put a price on their expertise and service. read more

My friend and I visited this store for shoes and other supplies I needed for the Women's March in Washington. I was truly impressed by the level of service, product knowledge, and care taken to ensure I found the right product and size. The bike shop in REI, Conshohocken, is the place I trust most to have my restored 1976 Viscount AeroSpace Pro road bike maintained. Once again, bike mechanic Curtis at the Conshohocken, PA, REI store helped me out with his expert knowledge and skills in making an important adjustment to my bike. Expert work done by Curtis has been second to none and instrumental in helping me get back into biking after a twenty-plus year hiatus. Last summer, his advice as to my purchase of some key components, his expert installation of them, and the patience he took in adjusting them to fit my particular physical dimensions have enabled me to ride comfortably, and to fully appreciate this classic bike. Also, he expertly measured and perfectly placed the decals I'd finally obtained onto the bike. In addition to excellent mechanical skills and long experience, Curtis has an outstanding (and rare, imo) ability to articulate his extensive knowledge and honest advice to a customer. Everyone I've met and talked with at REI Conshohocken has been friendly and helpful, and I also have a strong sense that this is a very ethical company to do business with. UPDATE - I moved to Philly last year and started going to this REI... no more... the staff and management are extremely rude and ignorant about the products and store policy not to mention that this location is dirty and pretty nasty compared to the other locations they have... obviously this has transfered over to the sales and management staff attitude as well. I'm canceling my co-op membership and sticking with BackCountry.com for EVERYTHING from this point out... Overall, REI is a great retailer with a stellar reputation but this location needs a major rehab... both the space and the salespeople. I was in looking at a pair of Asolo boots a few weeks ago and trying to get some help from the salesperson with no luck what so ever. I already have three pairs of Asolo's so all I was looking for was to try them on. When one of the sales people reluctantly agreed to grab me a pair from the back he immediately ditched me for a couple of a certain age with Main Line new money who started throwing out that they were leaving to go "trekking in Nepal...". I was dropped and immediately this couple received all of this guys undivided attention... but hey! He WAS able to sell these idiots a few pairs of $35 socks! I usually get looks of disdain from the rest of the staff at this location as well which is strange because every other REI store I've ever been in has been great. Maybe some of the Main Line New Money snobbery has unfortunately rubbed off on the sales staff and management team. Early July, height of cycling season and I bring in my commuting bike for repair. I am told 21 days to turn it around. "We are just swamped," is what the mechanic said. I replied "it is July, this is when people ride bikes...." Inventory is great, prices are outrageously high and this was utterly disappointing. read more

I like going to REI. I wish they had one in the city. The employees are very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. They have a good selection, and it doesn't hurt that it's a co-op. They offer classes, which I have not taken, but I like the idea (maybe if they were located in the city..??). This is definitely my preferred outfitter. read more

My version of the ultimate toy store. I recently attended a outdoor photography class via REI's outdoor school. We had a 2 hour class session and then a 4 hour outside hike. The instructor (JT) lead our motley crew into the woods of Valley Forge. He shared some fantastic tricks and helped us develop a sense of composition. I was impressed and enjoyed the entire day. It was well worth cash and time. I will do it again. read more

There is a lot of different and interesting things here and it might be nice for a walk around and some browsing but that's about it. They don't have a lot of any particular and what they do have is over priced. You can find everything here on Amazon or online for much cheaper. The staff seemed unfriendly, loathing helping anyone and they barely even had anyone on register. The crowd is mostly stuffy snobs who like to stare and they wasted way too much space on the bike section. I don't think I'll ever return here. read more

Purchased a new bicycle from REI at 200 W Ridge Pike Ste 115, Conshohocken, PA 19428. It was a Novara Madrona 29er, size small. Now days, this is a pretty unique bike as it is one of the few 29er left in this size for women. We wanted a 29" tire for many reasons, including the fact that it is what we have on all the other bikes. Most new women bikes, including REI 2015 model, are moving to 27.5". We were quite excited to find a good performance 29er bike for a very competitive price. This is to be our very first purchase from REI and we opted to have the bike ship directly to the store. There were a number of errors made in the shipping/delivery/assembly process. We were very frustrated at the end. Brandon, the bike mechanic in the store, wanted to make sure we were happy. What happened next really amazed us. Brandon help setup our bike so that we can easily use it in our indoor trainer or off road. Brandon figured out what would make this customer believe in REI. When they said "100% satisfaction", they meant "200%". read more

REI SUCKS I love the outdoors and I can't tell you how utterly disappointed I am to write this review. I tried to return a Christmas gift and the manager wouldn't get off her lazy rear to even dignify me with a polite "no" or "I'm sorry" just that's our bureaucratic policy despite the fact we advertise 100% satisfaction guarantees I'm just too busy shoving my face to have some decent manners. My boyfriend and I were on the hunt for new hiking shoes, so we headed over to REI knowing that they'd have what we wanted. After some browsing through things we didn't really need (aka all the cool camping stuff like jetboil), we headed over to the footwear section of the store. I know I wanted waterproof shoes, which I thought would be widely available, but it really wasn't. (For women, there were maybe 4 types of hiking shoes that were waterproof.) The associate came over to ask if we needed help and I asked him to bring out two shoes (well technically one was a boot) in my size. His response "You know those are the same shoe, right?" Whoa, Mr. Snotty. I shot back "Oh yeah, well why then is one listed as a boot (higher ankle height) and the other a shoe (low ankle)?" No response, he just slinked away to get the shoes. I tried them on and was happy. He came back a few more times to assist my boyfriend and then took his sweet time grabbing the shoes. Maybe he was having an off day, but it rubbed me the wrong way so badly that I'm shaking my head while writing this review. Anyway, REI is usually a pleasant experience. The selection of items is pretty good, the store is usually pretty clean, and the associates know their stuff (even boot man after I set him straight). Maybe their prices are a little high, but I know they had the best price for the hiking shoes I bought, which was great for me. I've been to many REI stores, but I love the one in Conshy the best. We were there just yesterday on a rainy Sunday, big sale day. It was ca row ded, to say the least. No sweat for the REI staff, though. They were helpful (thanks to John for setting up a table not on display with a smile and good info) in every department we were browsing. The dressing room line could have been chaotic but for the calmness of the woman doing the assigning. It was a wait to get in one, but cool heads prevailed. That would be my only issue with the store. Why so few dressing rooms? Too small a store, maybe. This is a great store for just about any outdoor supplies and gear you could ever want. The 20% off member coupon came in very handy for that camp table I bought. The only problem with REI is wanting and buying too much! read more

I've been shopping here for several years and appreciate the co-op business model. Salespeople are extremely friendly and go out of their way to help you. And I often find just what I need. That said, and why I'm rating with 4 stars instead of 5, is that my experience has been that some salespeople are extremely knowledgeable about their department but some have limited knowledge or their knowledge is limited to store offerings only (I've seen this a couple of times in the shoe section, also with sunglasses), which is disappointing for REI which I hold to a higher standard than your average retail establishment. read more

This REI location is fantastic. I've been to a couple REIs and this one definitely beats other locations in their customer service. I've been wanting to buy rock climbing shoes for a while and there were two employees that were helping me the entire time. It was perfect because both of them had rock climbing experience. Andy worked at all the PRG locations in PA and even knew about Earth Treks in MD. It was great to have one-on-one attention when it came to something as complicated as sizing. He even explained the uniqueness of my foot by sizing it and why I would find shoes more uncomfortable than the typical customer. He made multiple recommendations and made sure I had the perfect fit. In the end, I settled on La Sportiva Tarantulace after trying multiple models on REI's rock ledge and walking around the store. Andy was awesome and I will definitely return for all my outdoor gear. read more

Tops for bicycle repairs at reasonable rates. They blow the competition away. Pricing on clothing though is another story. You feel like your are shopping at a Bloomingdales with the pricing on their articles. Majority of clothing are imports and the pricing it the stratosphere. Lets see more US manufactured items and bring the pricing down. For a "cooperative" the management team is well rewarded. read more

I've been a member of this store since 1992, and they just keep getting better. While their prices are retail, their clearance racks have great deals, but really, their selection of high quality ski, snowboard, camping, kayaking, backpacking, and bicycles (and bike gear) is second to none? Where else can you go int he Philadelphia area to outfit yourself for a safari trip, mountaineering trip, and get a backpack for your dog while getting your skis tuned or bike shifters fixed? Mot importantly, they really care for their employees - ALL their employees. Their master tech is a genius with bikes and skis/boards as well. read more

Staff is excellent. I am a relative newbie with REI -- bought an inflatable kayak here a couple years ago -- so I have been startled by how knowledgeable and helpful everyone is. Getting hiking boots, the young woman who was helping me seemed to have the equivalent of a medical degree in shoes. She instructed me in walking up and down their little mountain-climber as well as other fine points I had never imagined previously. And then, when I needed a half-size in between what they had in the shoe I liked best, they called another store and had it shipped to me for free. Plus, the kayak has been excellent. They do not carry every last little thingie that you can get to add to your primo kayak experience, but can't fault them for that, so I get them from the dealer. REI's prices, in general, might be a little higher than the competition, but I've never done a comparison. The amount of service is so vastly higher here that it is worth it.
