Just an odd experience yesterday at REI with a teller named Chris, we had a faulty item and went into figure out a return. It was a bike rack we'd purchased from another REI and had to get things replaced. I went up to the front counter and was met with a very weird attitude/criticism and weird looks that I didn't know to go to the bike counter in the back of the store(didn't even know there was a counter back there).... Got back to that counter and the bike guys were like no, you could have done this up there, no reason to haul the rack back here.... Otherwise a solid REI just a very weird social encounter that threw both my wife and I. read more

Can't believe this place doesn't allow dogs. I read up online, while they have a no dog policy, it pretty much depends on individual store manager. Clearly the store manger is not a fan of animal, while they are still selling cloths for dogs. It's 100 degree out there so it will be really nice if the store manager or employees could have some empathy. read more

The employees here are very knowledgeable and helpful. I came in to try on hiking shoes and I was helped by Linda who was extremely knowledgeable and nice. She was patient with me and thoroughly helped me, and another customer in there, pick out hiking shoes. She didn't mind bringing out several pairs for us to try on. She was very friendly too and kind. 5 stars for Linda! Additionally, the precautions taken by the store in regards to the coronavirus are very responsible and thorough. All the employees wear masks and they strongly encourage customers to wear masks too. They were cleaning every surface and offered hand sanitizer for customers. There was even a woman standing outside the store when I came in to tell me what to expect since reopening the store. I was very impressed! Great job REI! read more

I received excellent customer service in the shoe department. I was looking at women's hiking shoes. I had purchased a pair that was uncomfortable. The salesperson was very helpful and patient and showed us how to use the windowpane lacing. This helped relieve pressure in the area that was bothering me and made the shoes more comfortable. She suggested I try them out see how they feel and if they don't work out feel free to bring them back within one year and they will replace or refund. REI sells quality merchandise and backs it up with a great guarantee and excellent customer service. read more

Was not impressed with the service of this location... Covid aside. Sales people were very guarded. Did not feel relaxed shopping here. I felt like they were expecting me to be a shoplifter. In support of this as I made my Kuhl pant purchase I had set my 12 year old jacket on the sales counter with my purse so that I could access my wallet. I handed the sales associate my pant purchase and she proceeds to ask me "is that your jacket?" Taken aback I answered "um yes" " "if it wasn't I would if handed it to you with the pants to purchase". She snidely remarks " well how was I supposed to know". Snidely again " Sorry" whoa... will not ever be back! Had I had time I would have spoke to the manager. read more

REI stopped doing the "Deal of the Day". On their recent mailed flyer the 20% off coupon was only good for their online outlet store. Clearance deals on shoes can still be found if you're lucky, but other merchandise is over priced. They stopped their lifetime warranty a few yrs ago. Just seems like they're trying to get away from customer service & in-store shopping. read more

My wife and I were hassled by nosy rude staff from every department as we walked through. They were aggressive and unfriendly and made the shopping experience unpleasant. The whole of REI has really gone downhill as they have become more concerned with pushing politics than having g a good knowledgeable staff. read more

This was my first time going to a REI and it just happened to be in Missoula, Montana. They carry everything you need for the outdoors such as waterproof rain jackets, backpacks, climbing gear, cycling gear, bikes, running gear. In order to do any shopping, you will require a 20 dollar lifetime membership. This REI is on the small side, and isn't one of those supermarket sized outdoor stores. Staff were friendly, but I didn't get a chance to buy anything because I didn't need anything. read more

I'm always a fan of REI's. The staff are friendly and helpful if you need it. It seems to be decently stocked of necessary items for the Montana backpacker/biker. I've been to the Denver and Seattle stores and it's difficult for me not to compare all the other REI's to those nowadays cause those ones are really awesome in my opinion. But I for sure enjoy this REI and would recommend it to folks. read more

Not sure if they sell camping gear or memberships and credit cards. Last resort if local, and cheaper, outdoor supply places don't have what I'm looking for. Two male staff members ignored me for half an hour to help one pretty girl with snowshoes. Need to have boobs or need a membership to get any attention from staff apparently. Gear is all extremely marked up and WAAAYYYYYY CHEAPER ONLINE OR AT SPORTSMANS (few blocks away). read more

I don't often review chain stores on Yelp, preferring to focus on local independent vendors who lack the market share & hefty advertising budget of a billion dollar+ sales giant like Recreational Equipment, Inc. REI is in 30 states already and growing at a rate of a couple of new stores a year. But, as it's a Pacific NW company (Kent, WA is about 400 miles from Missoula); since it's still a co-op that pays annual dividends to members; and since it has a good record of green energy use and employee benefits, I decided to make an exception. Many REI customers order on-line, which is convenient but kind of defeats the purpose of getting outdoor gear advice from, in essence, your neighbors who work at REI and are often heavy users of the products you'll see in the showroom. Talking to them while checking out gear is a great way to learn about interesting places in the area to hike, ski, bike, or float, and they aren't shy about recommending a less expensive item (regardless of brand) if it's something they have personal experience with. Like a lot of Yelpers, I do my share of on-line research and read reviews (surprise), but I have to admit that there's no direct equivalent to talking with someone face-to-face while testing the weight of an ice axe, comparing two sizes of backpacks, or exchanging tips on the best spots to go camping. Often you'll end up choosing something that wasn't on your list but that is either less money or a better match for your interests and abilities. I went discount ski shopping to take advantage of a 20% off sale and ended up spending 30 minutes or so with an employee who was a nordic skier himself and knew the products from first-hand experience. He steered me away from a 175 cm length of the touring xcountry ski I wanted (Rossignol EVO Glade), reminding me that with a pack and boots on I would exceed the recommended 150 lb. weight limit. So I moved up to the next size (which was same price). He also helped me get an inexpensive set of poles and some boots (by Fischer) that worked well with my set-up. Needless to say that without Patrick's input, I would have ended up with something different and probably would have had to exchange the skis, boots, or poles for a better fit. The upside of all of this, of course, is that I gave my new purchase a rigorous field testing the next day, on a challenging 15 mile loop in the Bitterroot Mountains: a combo snowmobile/ungrommed ski trail that, on the day I visited, was empty (except for me) and covered (and I do mean covered!) in a thick blanket of falling snow. As I plowed through deep, wet powder while climbing up and down the ridges, I appreciated the added width and stability of the EVOs, which are designed for mixed in-track/out-of-track use. The longer poles and insulated boots kept me moving steadily, until I finally reached the more moderate last 4 miles at Packer Meadows, where a lone snowmobile track had packed the trail down enough for me to glide all the way back to Lolo Pass visitor center 5 hours after I started. I was soaked to the bone, since the snow had fallen steadily the whole time - often horizontally, and more often than not directly into my face. But the skis did splendidly. They allowed me to connect with this gorgeous and silent winter landscape in a whole new and immersive way. Three stars for the store, and one for Patrick. The late February snows at Lolo Pass did the rest. read more

I have never really bought anything serious at REI until a year ago. I got a pretty expensive city bike, they were really helpful with helping me customize and special order the bike. I got everything, from the color I wanted, to the helmet, to the basket, the bell, and the water bottle and the water bottle holder. Not to mention, the titanium lock & key set. It was a pretty serious purchase for me as I am more of a girly girl but I always loved to ride. I was told getting a lock was a no brainer in this city, and they were really nice & fair to me. I chose to go there over Trailhead b/c the guys at the Trailhead are sometimes a little bit young & arrogant. read more

I always visit the REI wherever I travel. This store is smaller than I expected, given the outdoorsy area, but stock matches up to STL pretty well, though there is more rock climbing gear and kayak availability here. The staff was less helpful, enthusiastic, and forward than any REI I've been to, however. Maybe the local outfitters outdo them. read more

I came into Missoula a few days ahead of schedule for a family event after a misplanned trip in hell's canyon took shorter than expected. I went into REI for a recommendation for a local 3-day trip to fill the time and was helped by someone (wish I had his name) who suggested a loop up the rattlesnake creek trail and down the sheep mountain trail about 20 minutes out of town. He also sold me some boot sealant and tent fly sealant in case that helps with identification. The sheep mountain trail was still pretty snowy so the boot sealant never stood a chance, but all in all the trip was spectacular! Beautiful weather the whole time and jawdropping views from mineral peak and sheep mountain. Couldn't imagine a better use of three days. this rei has great customer service but has to be one of the smallest rei that I have been to, and because of this, their stock is limited.

I have purchased bikes tents sleeping bags etc. I take their in store classes usually without charge. They are excellent and the employee help on making the best decisions is superb. One tent had a slight defect and they replaced it no questions ask. They cater to their customers and i usually get a nice dividend each year. read more
