As an artist and a photographer who loves international films and culture and who has spent the last 20 years living in either NYC or Southern California, it was a tough transition to move to Northern Michigan (no museums, few galleries with and small downtowns.) As someone who has lived primarily in apartments, when my wife and I recently moved into a house in beautiful Harbor Springs, we had design and remodeling on the brain. (We had been absorbing HGTV and Interior design magazines for over a year before the move.) For full disclosure's sake, my sister is an employee at Reid Furniture but I hadn't really been in the store before returning to Michigan a month ago and her and I never discussed her job much when we talked (we had busy lives and hadn't kept in touch as well as we should have.) At 41, I have never owned nice furniture and when you live in apartments and move a lot, it all becomes kind of disposable (which is ironic because I bet I have spent more on cheap furniture that broke and wore out and that I discarded, than had I just saved for quality stuff.) All I can say is that now that we have settled down in the area, I will never buy cheap stuff again and I will never purchase home decor from anyone but Reid Furniture again. Wow!!!! This store is like a museum. It is endless. When you think you have seen everything, you learn there is a lower level filled with more rooms, beds and more. There is an upper level filled with Coastal themed decor, followed by rooms that made me feel nostalgic for NYC again (the Rat Pack themed room and the King Kong and Audrey Hepburn art are on my list of "wants.") Item after quality item, room after themed room, and couch after bed, after dresser after lamp and art, Reid Furniture is infused with style, culture, and energy. It is ironic that a store I never would have visited in my younger years is one that I can't wait to return to with more money (not that it is expensive at all, as I was quite surprised that so many items were much lower than I anticipated they would be.) I always suspected my sister Amber was a good salesperson but like me, she sells from the heart and ensures that people get quality and a product that actually fits their lifestyle. Observing the other staff members during my visits reminded me of an earlier time when customer service mattered. Every customer is greeted like a friend, and leaves feeling like family. So, I'm the kind of guy that will pick the first thing he sees without a lot of contemplation because material things and shopping don't matter as much to me, and my wife and I needed a couch. We decided on a small one that seemed decent enough but Amber broke down what our needs were for space and comfort and made us consider our growing little one, and found us one that better suited us. Several hours later Reid Furniture delivery staff (the nicest guys I have ever met) delivered the couch and we were watching television like we had owned the most comfortable, beautiful couch for years. My wife and I have a running checklist of items we want to purchase from Reid Furniture and will NEVER shop elsewhere because not only is it a pleasure just to browse the store and to hang out with the warm staff, but it is nice to shop somewhere that recognizes the value of your hard earned dollar in relation to the level of quality and customer service it buys. I love Reid Furniture and I love that it is family owned and that is has been in business since 1927. I also love that it is in beautiful downtown Petoskey and that by spending my money there I am supporting local independent businesses. If you have never been in, go asap and if you have been in but not in awhile, get in there because new items are brought in regularly. Reid Furniture has a hometown flair, wonderful customer service and atmosphere, but boasts an international culture and flavor and a style and aesthetic equal to the best interior designers. read more

More than a furniture store, Reid Furniture is an Experience, a destination! Customer service is Exceptional! A hidden treasure in down town Petoskey! When walking into Reid Furniture you are greeted by a friendly salesperson that is not going to hound or stalk you while you are looking around. There are three levels of unique furniture and home décor! I have to say that the buyer for the store has a real eye for finding pieces that are truly unique and brings something different to the area that the big box stores are incapable of! A customer will know that making a purchase from here, their neighbor is not going to have the same furniture and décor sitting in their living room! Great Prices, Quality Furniture, Awesome Customer Service and No Gimmicks! I recently was in the market for a new living room set.....I was on was on my way to one of those big "box stores" to make my purchase and was told to just stop in and see what Reid Furniture had. I am so glad I did..... I fell in love with an overstuffed chair and ottoman, however wasn't crazy about the fabric. The salesperson was quick to let me know that I could pick out my own fabric for the chair for the same advertised price (who would have thought.) I ended up not leaving the store and ordering a sofa, 2 chairs, ottomans and two side tables for my living room. Reid Furniture delivered it in a timely manner, had very professional delivery staff who brought everything in the house, set it up and guess what.....No delivery charges! Our toilet flooded in the middle of the night (on a Monday, no less). I didn't want t o risk serious water damage, so I did a quick search and found Reid Furniture Co. I requested a quote on Yelp and they responded within minutes. They arrived, and soon my toilet started spewing fecal matter all over the ceiling. Definitely took customer service a step further with that. Plus, the $10 coupon on their page was a nice little bonus. read more

Great furniture selection, but unfortunately my friend is in the midst of a bad experience buying a bed. You would think a $2000 purchase would end in total satisfaction, but that is not the case thus far. The sales gal Carol failed to mention any 2 week return policy. (My friend called to report her dissatisfaction a mere 4 days after purchasing the bed, and she was ENCOURAGED to sleep on it longer and was still not told of the 2 week return policy!) What does that mean to my friend? Well since the $2000 bed was not comfortable she chose another one which happens to be $1500 and her sales lady tells my friend to eat the difference. So she will have a $1500 bed that costs $2000. Long story short. Not satisfied with this experience. She also picked out a chair that was on sale for $599 and was told the price would be "a little more" if she chose different fabric for it. The quoted cost for the chair after her chosen fabric: $1109. Yikes! Needless to say, she didn't get the chair. UPDATE: The difference has been paid back to my friend for the bed, minus the two separate $40 delivery charges. Finally this is over. read more

This place is HUGE and packed with furniture, framed artwork, lamps, etc. Deceiving from the outside storefront on Mitchell Street about how BIG it is...there's a large basement and a third floor. Staff helpful & knowledgable without being pushy--they left me alone to shop but were there when I had questions. They must not work on commission which is kinda nice...I hate the hard-sell. Impressed with the selection, that it's locally owned and operated, has fair pricing and quality furniture. Nice change from the "everything's always on sale" box stores. read more

This place is the real deal. Higher prices than mainstream retailers, but much higher quality across the board. Staff isn't paid on commission, either, so the "vulture" effect you get elsewhere (ahem, Art Van) is thankfully nowhere to be seen. It's no wonder this place has been open since the 1920's. That's what happens when you sell real furniture at won't-fall-apart-upon-delivery prices. My husband and I went to James A. Reid Furniture Company in Petoskey, Michigan one Sunday afternoon. They were closed but what a window display that made us both smile as the "Deer" was relaxing in his lovely living room. So off to James A. Reid Furniture the following Saturday morning. When we entered the front door we were greeted by a lovely young lady named Julie. We spent well over three hours making ourselves to home as they have three floors of quality furniture. Jlie was upstairs and downstairs being very patient & understanding of our needs. We finally sat down to relax and make our final decisions. Julie is the most wonderful person to do business with. She is patient, brilliant and very honest. She had good ideas and excellent suggestions to help us select our new beautiful living room furniture. We can't wait to go back to shop for our new dining room furniture. We really were treated royally by Karen & Amber & Scott and James too. read more
