It pains me to write this unfortunate review for LAUREN CAMPBELL, one of the relationship…read moretherapists who works here, but I feel the need to do so for the sake of other couples going through challenges and seeking genuine help. My now ex spouse and I paid for a handful of virtual couples therapy sessions with Lauren. I was desperate for help and we were on the brink of divorce. After meeting with Lauren a few times as a couple, it was clear to me we weren't making progress. My ex told me on multiple occasions that he thought therapists were meant to act as a "judge" in couples therapy. As a result, he approached couples therapy with Lauren as if he were some kind of TV attorney pointing out all the things mentally wrong with me and expected Lauren to be some kind of moral judge. And in those sessions, Lauren would listen and validate his feelings. It seemed to me Lauren's approach was centered around emotional validation. Therefore, whoever was the loudest and talked the most in couples therapy received the most emotional validation from Lauren. Personally, I did not care for Lauren's style and approach in this manner, but understand how this may resonate with other couples. Lauren, acting as our couples therapist, agreed to meet with my ex-spouse 1:1. I was never notified of this meeting nor have I ever met with Lauren 1:1. It was relayed to me by my ex she told him during his 1:1 session that based off of all the things he told her, she would diagnose me as having borderline personality disorder. Afterward, he forwarded me an email she sent him with a link about Borderline Personality Disorder. In her email, she was careful to state she was not formally diagnosing me, but to see if the information resonated with him. After that email Lauren sent to him directly, this "diagnosis" became a tool my ex used to weaponize against me, and for weeks I thought I may have had BPD. It was horrible...just horrible. For the record, I don't have BPD-- I was in a toxic relationship with an individual who took repeated steps to make me feel crazy as a control tactic. I also don't want to stigmatize borderline personality disorder, as it is a very real thing and there is no shame in having it. While Lauren's intentions and approach of emotional validation may have been altruistic in her mind, I believe her decisions were misguided. Unfortunately many couples therapists are not trained in coercive control, emotional triangulation, or spotting abuse. I have more tools now to understand what was happening to me back then, but during that time I did not. In looking back, I believe my experience working with Lauren resulted in more irreparable harm than good. Good luck, and if you're going through relationship pains, I wish you all the best.

I found that sex therapy assumes husbands of female sex abuse survivors are FULLY SEXUALLY…read moreEXPERIENCED MEN. In some cases such men have for many years accommodated abuse-related sexual restrictions and prohibitions which severely curtail the couple's enjoyment of sex. And in some cases (like mine) we did not fully understand that because we both met in our late teens and had had no other partners. My limited experience also led me to assume women generally don't like sex much at all, The assumption of lots of previous experience is also odd given that they preach monogamy, secure attachment, avoiding affairs and look down on casual sex. Where are you supposed to get the "corrective" actual experience? We wasted a huge amount of time in sex therapy (total of six therapists over 25 years, (including two at Awakenings Counseling for Couples and Sex Therapy which I employed individually) where the problem was treated too much like a simple desire discrepancy, with predictable remedies of better emotional communication and candlelight dinners -- none of which ever helped our sex life. We didn't have the experience perspective to see that her childhood sexual abuse was severely curtailing our sex life. We didn't know enough to bring it up, and they weren't insightful enough to ask. If you pursue sex therapy, ask very direct questions. Do not rely on the therapist to uncover fundamental issues. Be very explicit and forthcoming. I found that many sex therapists are surprisingly shy and reluctant to sound too "pornographic", and too often wave their hands with generalities, like responding to my specific question about what women in normal relationships do with a non-answer like "oh, women are all different". Save time by first getting a basic understanding of where sex therapists are coming from. Start by reading Dr. Laurie Watson's excellent book, "Wanting Sex Again".

Only 1 star for the fact my partner is actively in sessions with Amanda Walker. We had Amanda from the beginning precisely for infidelity/couples therapy. I figured few sessions in the beginning is to get to know the couple after filling out extensive survey then I soon realize our sessions rarely even contained anything infidelity related, honestly was a completely unsuccessful/non effective expensive help. She never even helped us with healthier coping mechanisms, not even exercises for us to do as a couple about our communication. I even suggest her an exercise I read from a therapist for us to follow, just for 5 days later she didn't even remember it? So what exactly were you typing the entire time? It was seriously like hiring someone to say "Yeah, Yeahhhh, ok got it, I see, I'm sorry about that, I can't imagine" but just to my partner only 100xs for $130+an hour. It started to get highly uncomfortable especially since I'm the woman and the victim of infidelity but what really made it my last straw was when she verbally called me out and berated over and over insulting labels. She defined me as something so hurtful when she didn't even care to ask me to explain all she did was heard what He said then ignorantly attacked me. I was humiliated She reacted as if she took it personal it was negligent and borderline unethical instead of remaining neutral calm and professional. She later emailed him to apologize but it was too late and the damage had been done. I simply can't help how I respond to domestic violence but I was wronged for it, I felt so betrayed by her and traumatized I couldn't even get myself to go back. Just the thought of trying to be in a session with them made me cry, I had to email and discharge myself as a patient ASAP. I had a complete mental breakdown and hysterically sob in the ending of that session. Let me tell you this experience with her has left me so broken and made me fear seeking professional help again. I will have to independently build trust for when time is right to try someone else again, I hope no one has to go through what I had to it was horrific and just awful headspace to be. Again keep in mind not every counselor is for everyone. Her friendly relationship with my partner has made it easier for him to open up to her, so at least she's doing something with him. 1 star for that.

I saw the one-star review here and had to do a double-take to make sure I hadn't written it. My ex-husband and I saw Dr. Sara twice a number of years ago. Like the other reviewer, our experience has haunted me and it's important for others to know. She was extremely unprofessional and inappropriate in our second (also our last) session, ultimately yelling loudly at me and yelling an expletive: "you hate his f*cking guts!" We were in the middle of a very painful situation - trying to decide if we were staying together or getting divorced. Needless to say, we were shocked. Dr. Sara was not only unhelpful, her behavior made the situation more hurtful, more confusing, and made it seem truly hopeless. If this was the type of couples/sex therapy that existed, we were screwed. My recommendation: stay away. Find another sex or couples therapist, even if it means meeting with someone virtually in another town or state. I hope this is helpful.

She indeed does lie and manipulate and more, which was the final death nail in my former marriage. So, I stand firmly by my original review.
