I've heard good things about a lot of the providers and my initial session was okay, but the…read moreadministration and policies are just an absolute mess. There's so much paperwork even compared to other local offices of a similar size, it was difficult to schedule an appointment because I sent an email, got an auto-response saying I had to call, got sent to voicemail after the phone rang for like 5 minutes, which told me I could make an appointment on their website, filled that out, then played phone tag for the rest of the day. Every single one of their systems is complicated and opaque. They told me that they would be in network for my insurance and then they sent me an email *during my initial session* that they weren't, so now I'm out $130 for 50 minutes of talking with somebody about what we would, in theory, talk about in future therapy sessions that I won't be able to pay for. And to top it all off, when I made the appointment I had asked them to make one of the free 15-minute consults, and I'm still not sure how that got lost in translation. Just wait a few months and they'll run off whatever therapist you're hoping to work with, too, and you can see them in a practice with better admin.

In some cases such men have for many years accommodated abuse-related sexual restrictions and prohibitions which severely curtail the couple's enjoyment of sex. And in some cases (like mine) we did not fully understand that because we both met in our late teens and had had no other partners. My limited experience also led me to assume women generally don't like sex much at all, The assumption of lots of previous experience is also odd given that they preach monogamy, secure attachment, avoiding affairs and look down on casual sex. Where are you supposed to get the "corrective" actual experience? We wasted a huge amount of time in sex therapy (total of six therapists over 25 years, (including two at Awakenings Counseling for Couples and Sex Therapy which I employed individually) where the problem was treated too much like a simple desire discrepancy, with predictable remedies of better emotional communication and candlelight dinners -- none of which ever helped our sex life. We didn't have the experience perspective to see that her childhood sexual abuse was severely curtailing our sex life. We didn't know enough to bring it up, and they weren't insightful enough to ask. If you pursue sex therapy, ask very direct questions. Do not rely on the therapist to uncover fundamental issues. Be very explicit and forthcoming. I found that many sex therapists are surprisingly shy and reluctant to sound too "pornographic", and too often wave their hands with generalities, like responding to my specific question about what women in normal relationships do with a non-answer like "oh, women are all different". Save time by first getting a basic understanding of where sex therapists are coming from. Start by reading Dr. Laurie Watson's excellent book, "Wanting Sex Again".

As they expand they are adding physical locations which are 10 plus miles apart. The administrative staff makes errors in appointment locations and times some 20% of the time. I share this from family experience and observing patients arrive and even waiting for appointments in the wrong office. Later the administrative staff will claim they notified them. I've observed patients sharing the phone and text messages proving they were never notified. Even myself, I setup an appointment 4 to 6 weeks in advance, the day before the appointment I was texted the appointment was in the office I expected, 1 hour before the appointment I was informed the appointment was moved to another office. This is extremely unprofessional. A practice does not change a providers location a few hours in advance. The practice manager had to have been advised of this change weeks ago. The manager did nothing. They do have some good staff. They need more. They need to increase the salaries and benefits to attract more professional and experienced administrators who take responsibility and accountability. Doctor Tharwani and his clinical staff are very good. Just expect issues 20% of the time issue with your appointments until they get proper administrative staff and/or procedures.
