In fact there is a chance that at least parts are completely unrecognized by me. Regardless of its present shape, to the best of my knowledge it remains a community based, almost entirely a volunteer effort. I have found KFAI to be a source of information representing a diverse swath of voices, eclectic musical offerings and an interesting lineup of on-air talent. The signal used to be quite weak and localized. Since then I understand that it has significantly extended its reach to include most if not all of the metro. If you plan on contributing to a listener supported station, to me KFAI is well worth your consideration.

It was a Sunday evening, I was laying on my bed listening to the radio and probably bored. I spun the dial all the way to the left and then I slowly started moving the dial to the right on my alarm/clock radio searching for something else. It didn't take much but I suddenly stopped it here, 90.3 FM. The song playing was Romeo Void's, Never Say Never. That guitar, drums, driving beat and suddenly that sax in the chorus was tossing my entire world of what I perceived as music. And enter the rabbit hole I did because many years down the road this station is still a mainstay. It still introduces me to music and I hear news that doesn't get played or aired anywhere else. Its local, supported by member listeners and is easily one of the most underrated things in this town. Music Nerd Fact that I learned from KFAI: You know that song "Train Kept a Rolling" made popular by Aerosmith? Well the 60's band Cream was one of the first to cover it but the original was done by Tiny Bradshaw. Yep. Each show is also available for 2 weeks after each airing via podcast. I was gonna plug a few of my favorites but I started going through the list and thought, crap! There's too many. Seriously, if you are the into music and appreciate the likes of The Current, KEXP out of Seattle or KCRW from Santa Monica, KFAI takes that and then adds some spice and takes it to a whole new level. I love their mix of music; it's perfect for those who love classic rock, acoustic, some folksy stuff, and contemporary rock. Think Brandi Carlile, Augustana, Missy Higgins, Rocky Votolato, John Mayer (all some of my faves!). Plus they have the acoustic sunrise and sunset programs, which feature live performances "unplugged" -- awesome. They also have their Studio C programs, where artists stop by the studio, interview and give exclusive performances. And, my personal favorite, "Freedom Rock", where Brian Oake plays imported, indie, and new release music that I would never hear elsewhere. Not to mention Cities97 sponsors loads of events in Minneapolis, including the Basilica Block Party. Maybe its because I grew up with them since they're my dad's fave, or maybe it's because I happen to be huge fan of the music they play, but I can't get enough of this radio station -- it's another reason I'm hugely looking forward to moving back to Minneapolis!

KDWB is one of the Twin Cities radio stations I frequently have playing in my car. I enjoy…read morelistening to the Dave Ryan show in the morning, the current hits/popular songs during rush hour, and calling into the variety of contests/giveaways they offer every day. I have won concert tickets multiple times through the phone and through their random drawings in-person...I like how many chances and opportunities they give people to win! Their radio DJs also have a lot of spunk and personality which as someone who tunes in often, makes me want to listen more. Another reason that makes KDWB one of my radio stations of choice is that they hold such fun and interactive events to get the local community together. For example, I have been to two of their "Bachelorette Viewing Parties" this summer and it's always a great time. We got free goodies and enjoyed the company at the gorgeous KDWB studios. KDWB seems to get a lot of backlash and criticism for their lack of "good music" but I think it depends on who you talk to...they play plenty of new songs and oldies but goodies. I think the music is geared toward a younger audience, so don't expect any classic hits if you tune into KDWB.

I don't pretend to understand all aspects of life outside my orbit.. All of that aside, I have punched 89.9 into many a car radio (back in the day I used actual buttons but more recently have used GUI). Yes, it is a proud and self proclaimed advocate for Communities of Color. But anyone within range can listen:-) Home to R&B, Soul, HipHop, Rap (I think that RAP music comes out of HipHop culture but I'm not sure), Gospel, Reggae and others. I find that it offers a little something for most everyone. The signal has grown significantly over the years and now reaches most if not all of the metropolitan area from its broadcast tower. Another listener supported effort, I feel that you might want to give it some positive attention. I think that if one enjoys KMOJ for a while, you may want to contribute to its continued success.

Oh yeah...they also are the radio home of the Minnesota Vikings. Don't get me started on AM 1500 ESPN ...their recent format change caused them to farm out 80% of the day to ESPN. What did that get them you might ask? Horribley annoying syndicated radio from guys we know dont give a crap about Minnesota. With that comes greatly reduced local coverage...unless you count the 5 hours of Patrick Ruesse's smokers cough.

Because that's something I want to do on my car radio. Whatever. Their tag line is "Minnesota's Best Variety of the 70's, 80's and today" and it was pleasant listening from around Marshall Minnesota into Minneapolis this afternoon. Good tunes. David Bowie, Wilson Phillips, Stray Cats, the Go-Go's and even some Tears for Fears. Unexciting but classic adult hits that won't bother anyone if you're listening to it in the office or in the dental waiting room. Good enough for driving today.
