This little…read morefamily-run, local jewelry shop is packed with jewelry - some older estate jewelry, as well as new pieces. I have purchased earring here in the past. The jewelry is neatly organized by type, stone, color, etc. Glass cases and walls are filled with silver and gold. The clerk/owner was friendly, knowledgeable and pointed out where to find the older pieces. She was happy to spend time with us or leave us to shop. I was fascinated by the large pieces of amber with little inclusions. I saw many quality pieces. Prices were reasonable. My husband liked looking at the sterling silver antique old and ends. A newspaper clipping on the wall tells the story of owners, Al and Carol Drake. The Drakes have been selling jewelry for 50 years. Al is a silver and gold smith. There was a sign that indicated that they repair and craft jewelry, but there is a three month wait because they are busy. We found free street parking nearby (which was a miracle). This shop is definitely worth checking out. You're probably not going to leave empty handed.

It is still in the family of founding owners Bill and Marielle Jockey as their daughter now owns it. Open year-round, The Totem Post offers authentic Native American jewelry, crafts, moccasins, knives, ethnic gifts, silver, and copper jewelry. The Totem Post folks are without fail friendly and I'm pleased to report that the shop itself is surprisingly wheelchair friendly (not always true in Nashville). A lot of the items at The Totem Post have a sense of spirituality to them and the times I've visited it has felt like a bit of a respite to even enter the establishment. The store has a bit of a fun origin story. The Jockeys were dancers on the SS. Uruguay who visited family in Indianapolis. During the visit, they were taken to Nashville, Indiana. Not long after, the leathercraft establishment went up for sale - The Jockeys moved forward and bought the place and quickly began establishing themselves among Native American and South American communities so they could carry high quality yet affordable items. While Nashville has certainly grown larger than those five shops from 1952, The Totem Post remains a local favorite and a tourist destination. I seldom, if ever, visit Nashville without a stop here.

What you get for your dough is a bag of dirt. You take the bag to the water stream outside and pour some dirt into a strainer and wash it off. You're left with some cool rocks. There is a cheaper bag of shells and a bucket for $24 - same concept. It was a busy day in Nashville and the lady behind the counter let me know I was taking too much time deciding what I wanted - "you just stand there and let me know when you know what you want. It is busy and I have a lot of work to do," she told me. "But I have a question - "how does this work? I have never been here before" I replied. The good thing about this statement was that it allowed her to give a big exhale. "ahhhhh. you buy the bag, wash off the dirt and you get rocks. Here is a card that will describe the types of rocks you will get.... Bring the card back - I don't have many left" seeing that she had about a thousand of these cards at the counter alone, I bought a small bag and kept the card. It was a good break for the kids and they really enjoyed it. A Customer Aervice 101 course for the woman (owner I think) behind the counter would be well worth it though (and would get her another Yelp Star!)
