The doctors and especially the nurses I have dealt with through several surgeries and illnesses have been top notch and caring. No complaints and I have total trust in them especially in cardiology, neurology, vascular and diabetes care. They get five stars. The care in the ER, again especially from the nurses, is exceptional. Friendly and caring. They too get five stars. The problem is that when you need emergency care you first need to get triaged, this is what is so destructive to the UMass reputation. The people who staff the emergency check in are easily flustered and if you approach to ask why you have been sitting in the waiting room for 12 hours (my longest wait was 14 hours) they can be a bit cold, bordering on rude. You can get to triage without too much of a problem, just depends on how many people are in front of you. But the check in lacks a certain level of basic competence. I went to the ER with a stroke. The check in person had me sit with everyone else in the waiting room. After about 15-20 minutes a nurse came out to get me and realized I was having a stroke, from That point on they were awesome. Tonight I came here with a history of blood clots and apparently more were developing. I arrived here at 9pm. Quickly got into triage and again had two great nurses. I was told that because of my history of stroke and heart failure I would be put onto a priority list. It is now 5:00am and not a peep from anyone. The waiting room is almost empty. The person at check in was MIA. The security guards could not have been any more rude. In a nasty tone they told me to just wait for the nurse. They will not even look me in the eye, they look past you. This is the most unprofessional setting and 180 degrees from the rest of the facility. By the way, they came through to clean the waiting room once, they waited so long to clean that there was blood on the floor, bloody gauze, trash... it is just disgusting. Clearly the leadership team doesn't read any of the reviews here nor do they actually spend time in the ER, if they did they might just do something about it. No one is holding the leadership of the ER accountable, that is the problem. I have been a senior leader in HR for many years, I can fix this problem within weeks and start to change the culture and attitude of this ER operation. Follow up at 8:00am - I am finally in a room in the ER and it is 180 degrees from the experience of the check in and waiting area. Excellent doctors and nurses. Very caring and very nice to be around. So odd!

Dr. Khan is an…read moreabsolutely wonderful doctor who understood my genetic condition well, and staff were always quick to respond to my messages. Unfortunately, I have come to find out the hard way that this clinic is run and staffed by COVID deniers. This was my second time getting COVID. The first time I got it, my previous PCP prescribed me medication that helped a lot. I thought I could ride it out this time because my symptoms weren't as bad as they were the first time around, but I took a turn for the worse last night, so I decided to call in here and get an appt with Dr. Khan. When I explained that I had been on medication in the past and that it helped me, the practice manager, Jessica, told me that COVID-19 was treated "like a cold." I was appalled that she would refer to a disease that has killed millions of people as a "cold," and told her I was offended, but she ignored me and asked about my symptoms. I rattled them off and then sarcastically quipped, "you know, a typical cold." She then threatened to hang up on me and deny me treatment. When I told her I work in healthcare and that I would escalate this if she did that, she didn't hang up, but she still refused to apologize. She refused to schedule an appt with Dr. Khan and said she would send a message to "the team." I then got a callback from a nurse who told me that the practice manager was right, and they would not be making an appt with my PCP or prescribing me medication. I tried to highlight the severity of my symptoms, and this fell on deaf ears. When I maintained that it was extremely callous to refer to a disease that killed millions of people as a "cold" and asked if that was official clinic policy, the nurse confidently asserted that COVID-19 was "a virus, not a disease." This is in direct contradiction to the consensus of medical experts, including the World Health Organization, which states, "Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus." They refused to provide me with any treatment and told me to rest and drink orange juice. Orange juice! In the height of the pandemic in 2020, I worked as part of an outreach team to educate the public about COVID and help with access to testing. While I've never heard that ridiculous line about COVID not being a disease before, it is eerily reminiscent of AIDS denialism, which posits that HIV is just a virus that does not cause disease and that AIDS itself does not exist. Makes you wonder what other medical science they reject. I'm not going to stick around long enough to find out. If you believe in science, avoid this place at all costs.

I received a mystery bill of $426.17 for services performed at St. Vincent's hospital by a Reliant…read moredoctor. there was literally nothing explaining what this payment was for. It indicated that it was for a surgical procedure. But I never had surgery. If this procedure were performed at my local Reliant office, I would not have a $250.00 co-pay. AND THIS WAS NEVER EXPLAINED TO ME BEFORE THE VISIT. Otherwise, the visit would have been covered by my insurance. Or at least be much less than the $426 I was billed. I called to get more information and to ask for assistance as with winter being here, $426 could purchase nearly 100 gallons of heating oil. No such luck. I was forced into maxing out my card in order to pay $375 of the $426 I owed. Even though this means that I won't be able to adequately heat my home this season. They happily took what I have left in my account leaving $2.77 and offered nothing but to extend the payment period. If I don't have the money now, I won't have it later either. Now I need to call my oil supplier and have them stop automatic delivery as I have no way to pay for it. I think it ironic that a hospital named after a Christian saint is more interested in bill collection than those who must choose between a life necessity and keeping bill collectors at bay. I wonder if the hospital would allow me to sleep in their atrium.

I was prescribed 12 different supplements to take which was both questioned and ridiculed by my PCP & Functional Medicine Doctor I signed up with shortly after my third appointment with Dr. Lacava. Also when I had a tick bite that was not confirmed to have lyme his solution was to prescribe 600mg of Doxycycline to take daily for 30 days consecutively described as my PCP as the "nuclear option" which he was glad to find out I consulted with him first about this. Lastly we had discussed in my second appt. that he would help me with FMLA paperwork if I was not feeling better by our third appt. I reluctantly went to the third because of the cost and I had not made any progress since the second in the hopes he would keep his word, which at the end of the third he said he could not be "burdened by the paperwork" and to ask my PCP. During this appointment I was informed that I was not taking the correct amount of multivitamins he prescribed which was the sole reason I was not recovering and the other 11 prescribed supplements were ineffective without the multi vitamins. He looked me strait in the face and told me "You just don't want to get better", because I was not taking the correct amount of vitamins, regardless of the thousands of dollars spent on testing and treatment with him I clearly just did not want to get better. I've heard at one time he prescribed adequate care but he has fallen short of his ability as a provider. Don't waste your time, money, or effort here. He should not be trusted with anyone's health.

I'm going to try to break down my experience to a minimum but keep in mind a LOT happened in between but I would need to write a book in order to write everything that I went thru . In 2014 Dr lacava Dx'd me with Lyme disease. Prior to this I saw multiple doctors that treated me horrible, didnt listen to me, treated me like I was just there for the attention, treated me like it was all in my head, this includes the ER, neurology, & Infectious disease. my Primary doctors NP was the one who said "lets just do a lyme test" that started my journey reading about lyme disease and the ineffectiveness of the testing and CDC guidelines etc. I became an expert myself, I found dr lacava who did a whole bunch of blood tests and found i did in fact have lyme. and babesia . treated me for a year with anti malaria, antibiotics and to give you an idea how i felt? I thought i was dying a slow death and even wrote journals to both my kids so they would have something special from me when i was gone. No one but dr lacava LISTENED to me. TESTED me and TREATED me the way I should have been Listened to tested and treated. after a year i finally felt like a living human again . He also did allergy testing and found some things i was sensitive to and should stay away from and i have done just that. his visits were at times, long and tedious with his method of paperwork you have to fill out but worth every minute of my time. Some visits yes i did have to wait but that just shows that he DOES listen to ALL his patients no matter how long it took . he NEVER rushed me EVER. And the staff there is phenomenal so yes if i could give Dr Lacava and the staff stars? They would get 10
