Not the Same Practice Anymore We used to love coming to this office when it was run by Dr. Turnwald and his team. My kids actually enjoyed going to the dentist, and the entire staff was fantastic. About a year ago, I was having tooth pain and called to set up an appointment, and I was pleasantly surprised to get in the same day. However, when I showed up, I found out the entire old staff and Dr. Turnwald had left, and the practice had been sold to a new doctor--without any notice. Even the text and email confirmations still had the old dentist's name, so it was pretty frustrating to show up and find an entirely new staff and doctor. While the new staff was nice and the doctor was okay, the whole experience felt off-putting since I booked the appointment thinking it was still my family's trusted dentist. I also really missed my old hygienist, who always made visits easy for my kids. Honestly, had they been more upfront about the change when I called, it might not have left such a sour taste in my mouth. But now, I drive 30 minutes out of my way to see Dr. Black, where she has her own practice, and it's worth it for the care we receive. Most of the positive Yelp reviews here are for the old practice under Dr. Turnwald, and it says a lot that the entire staff left when he did. We've since followed Dr. Black to new office, and our family is much happier for it. read more

I recently had old fillings replaced and had my first gum cleaning- on separate days. Jennifer did the gum cleaning- which was almost painless! A couple of weeks later, Dr Lisa Black did the fillings. Ok so I accepted the topical numbing gel and then it was painless! Dr Black explained exactly what was happening and was patient and kind. I can't speak highly enough of the wonderful staff and state of the art options. My previous dentist retired. I didn't think anyone would be as great. I have been a patient for several years and decided on this dentistry due to the reviews I read. I do not see Dr. Turnwold much since Leah has been taking care of my teeth 3 times a year. Extremely professional and thorough. Facilities are top notch and clean. Never sat in the waiting room because she was always on time. There has been several reviews stating the lack of transparency on pricing. Well, I have been around for quite awhile and never saw dentists nor any doctors or other medical professionals with a price list or menu of their procedures... novel idea though... Nothing is free kiddos! When it come to my eyes, teeth or my general health, I do not care what it costs as long as it can be prevented and fixed. Very disappointed! person that take calls, needs to read patient information first before start talking. Everyone in the office is kind, very detail when explaining procedures but the front desk person needs to have re-training when handling calls. She told me "you have to call your insurance because I don't want to wait an hour" SMH! First call - to make appointment, very friendly. First visit - everyone is very professional , kind and knowledgeable . 5 stars. I'm not sure if I'm going back for my 2nd follow up appointment. I am not one of those patients who only have a biyearly cleaning and say "this is the best dentist ever!" I am a patient who has needed extensive dental work and expect it to look natural...plus I've always been apprehensive, riddled with anxiety and intense fear when it comes to the dentist. Insert Dr Turnwald and his staff. In the beginning, I would literally be shaking with fear coming into the office. As soon as the drill would fire up, I would clutch the sides of the dental chair so hard I thought I might break them bracing myself for the pain I knew would come as it has for me in the past with other dentists. I've got to give a shout-out to my dental office because they're just the best. Jen, my hygienist, is super friendly and always makes you feel right at home. Even if you're not a fan of getting your teeth cleaned, she's got a way of making it way less of a hassle. Dr. Turnwald is the best dentist in the area and his office and staff are amazing! I started going here because I cut Dr. Turnwald's hair and got to know him pretty well. He's a very nice person and very professional. He truly cares about his patients' dental health and overall well-being. He's also very well-versed in the latest dental advancements and is involved in elevating his profession through serving on dental association boards When I went in for the first time, he took photos of my teeth and did a full analysis of my teeth. only complain is the ins portion. no one ever mentioned that aetna ins is oon, i spoke to marybeth at the dental office and she states that it is patients responsibility to gather that info from the ins. but i feel that it is also the office responsibility to provide such information to prevent being shock once we receive our statement balance! if i had known, i would have cancelled the procedure and seek in network providers. marybeth also mentioned, we typically dont tell our patients unless ask. that is deceiving and very bad practice, it so sad to withhold information. my kids loved the practice but i cannot afford the cost, now im stuck with the bill; it was too good to be true. all future appts have been canceled. *** patients pls do research and ask for pre-d prior to any work done, you will be shock in the end. read more

I've been to many dentists all around Chicago, and most times, the experience has been fairly standard, which isn't saying much, but it gets the job done. I've been here 3 times, each with different treatments, so I'll breakup the review in segments: *The Initial Visit - Meet and Clean: My next agenda for dental work was getting my teeth straighten and this time I needed to find the right doc. After talking to a lot of people on the importance of going to a highly recommended dentist, not to mention after a bad experience with an oral surgeon, I decided to check out my Pharm D friend's dentist, Dr. Turnwald, whom she highly recommended. It's sort of like being in the inside of a secret society. As soon as I walked in, the office decor reminded me of a bed and breakfast. Even the staff is very personable and on my first visit they showed me around and introduced me to everyone. Once you get seated in the chair, you can get a warm lavender scented neck pillow. Leah was my oral hygienist and was very careful and thorough with my teeth cleaning. After several days, I could still feel how clean and smooth my teeth were. Of course, the real reason I came was to meet Dr. Turnwald and to give me an assessment for correcting and straightening my teeth. He came in gave me an initial exam and another type 2 exam had to be rescheduled. *Type 2 Oral Exam - the Agenda - perfect smile: On the second visit, it was an hour long thorough examination, photos, inspection of each tooth and gum, a synopsis of x-rays, and then options for treatment ranging from conservative to aggressive including an estimate of costs and a Q&A so I can walk out with plenty of info ready to make my big decision. This is what makes my dental experience truly exceptional. Friendly and informative, never rushed. Dr. Turnwald is also licensed to do Invisalign, but his professional opinion suggested braces which was what I ended up doing and he recommended me a wonderful orthodontist. *Teeth Twist Out: I had a baby tooth removed as part of my orthodontic procedure. Normally, the dentist has to do this, so back to OS dental with Dr. Turnwald. The whole procedure took less than 10min, very gentle and painless, and yes I did have my warm lavender neck pillow and some extra strength painkillers in case the novacaine wore off. Nice touch. Also, as an FYI for insurance purposes, they are not part of a network, which means that they can choose the best labs and providers. Last time I went, they do take care of the paperwork. read more

New patient here- I just finished my first appointment. I am very impressed with this office. Making an appointment was easy- Kim was very friendly and informative on the phone. I completed the new patient forms and submitted them online. Their COVID protocol is a good one- I arrived early and called from my car to check in. (I had already submitted my symptom questionaire online.) They asked me to wait in my car since there was one person in the waiting area. They called me in right at my appointment time. I always appreciate an office that runs on schedule. Leah, my hygienist, met me at the door and scanned my forehead to take my temperature. We entered the office and I used their hand sanitizer. Leah showed me around the practice, introducing me to staff and also pointing out the measures they are taking to keep a sterile environment. Leah took the time to explain absolutely everything about my procedure in a clear, concise way. I knew what was going on every second of the appointment and I also feel confident that she cleaned my teeth well. They feel great! Then an exam from Dr. Turnwald and a recommendation for my next appointment. Wonderful. A word about the office itself: BEAUTIFUL. I wasn't expecting that. The practice moved in last June and everything is fresh and new, and on top of that, the decor makes me feel calm and comfortable. I made an appointment because of my toothache and I wrote that in appointment form and also told the secretary on phone either. But Dr Benjamin Turnwald did nothing to relief my pain. He just wrote me an antibiotic recipe and told me to use Advil for relief the pain(instead of I have told him that : I don't prefer to use pharmaceutical medicine) He also said that , He made appointment in another dentist for root channel treatment, After I use the antibiotics for one week the other dentist will make the root treatment , after then he(Dr Turnwald) is going to fill rest of the tooth after then he will make crown" the total cost will be around $3000 I arrived the Clinic with toothache and left the clinic with toothache too and I paid $159 for that By the way he didn't check my other teeth After then I went another dentist, she explained every problems in my mouth in my chin etc. then started to clean the pathology (root channel treatment) immediately. She gave me free organic probiotics. She wrote me an antibiotic recipe too but she told me that : " don't use it if you don't have an unexpected inflammation " the total cost was $900 after the treatment I haven't used any medicine and now I can eat whatever I want Dear Dr. Turnwald , If you are not able to make a root channel treatment to a regular 2 roots tooth, why do you accept appointment from patients ? and as I know the Antibiotic is the last option in a treatment because it kills useful bacteria too . Love my dentist ! How often do you hear that? Very clean office, polite staff and all the comforts you never new you could get! If you are a nervous person at the dentist you will love this office. They offer warm blankets, headphones, neckwarmer pillows, and even someone to hold your hand if you need it - and more. My 8 year old son even enjoys his twice a year visits! I'm from Austin, TX so Olde Schaumburg is not my usual dentist, but the night before flying up for meetings in Chicago I chipped my front tooth, called this office from the airport in the morning and they were able to get me in that day during lunch when I landed! Dr.Turnball was great, and took as much concern as I in making sure this front tooth filling was perfect. The office staff was very welcoming and even have me a full office tour and introductions even though I was only a one-time patient. Also, the massaging chair and heated neck pillow during my treatment were a huge plus! Unfortunately it's not convenient to have a dentist 1500 miles away, but I would certainly recommend this office to anyone in the area. read more

I came to find that many people at my place of work use this dentist, so I gave them a shot and was greeted with a great surprise... This was the best dental experience of my life. "There is hardly anything worse in life than going to the dentist" - my mother to me before nearly every appointment of my life. Needless to say, I've been TERRIFIED of the dentist my entire life. It had been six years (yes, I know...) since I went to the dentist. Enter Dr. Turnwald. Dr. Turnwald was highly recommended to me by a friend. I decided I should probably grow up, face my fear, and just go... So I made an appointment. They have plenty of office hours, including later in the evening as well as Saturdays (yay for working people!). Fast forward a week: que the anxious and terrified patient... I was greeted by the friendly staff who welcomed me to the office and gave me all my 'new patient' paperwork right away. They took care of all my insurance, which is great, because I hardly know anything about it. The waiting room was comfortable. Although I have to say I didn't wait long. Dr. Turnwald introduced himself, but couldn't get too far before I cut him off and told him how nervous I was. He assured me everything would be fine. The office was clean and well organized. Then the moment of truth... I have to get into the chair and start the exam. Dr. Turnwald was patient and dealt with all my anxiety so well which put me at ease. He took the time to explain everything that he was doing and what it all meant. The assistant was also very patient and helpful when doing all the x-rays, and throughout the whole appointment. Overall, a great visit. I would have to say I'll probably even go back for my 6 month appointment. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel like a VIP from the minute you walk in the door. I hated the dentist until I met Dr. Kim Latour !!!! (also a dentist in this office) Dr. Latour was very attentive and professional, she put me at ease as soon as the consultation began, It also helps thats she super hot!!!! (side note: i sent over my boss, David and not only does he rave about all the ladies at the office, but i also think he's secretly in love with Dr. Latour. ) ..back to my visit ...Dr. Kimberly was super cool about explaining everything to me in a friendly manner, not talking down to me as some Dentist do. As it turns out the problem was very miner and not what i thought, so in the end i didn't have to pay an arm and a leg!!! Sweet! At the conclusion of my visit Dr. Latour went over my "new" dental hygiene regimen, and gave me a toothbrush! , and totally cured my fear of the dentist. I spoke to Janie and she was was able to set me up today same day for an emergency appointment. My crown came out yesterday and I had driven to Happy Smiles today at 7 am (their open time) thinking I could get in there but they weren't even open so I left half an hour later. I'm so glad I found them on Yelp as Dr Stump was able to get my crown back on and Mike his assistant was great. I even have a dental cleaning appointment in a few weeks! As a dental-phobic, terrified of the dentist since youth but in urgent need of dental care, a relative with a dental practice in another state told me about Benjamin Turnwald Dentistry (formerly Olde Schaumburg Dental) in 1998. Because of my fears, I had avoided the dentist for years, so my teeth were in bad shape. The team at Olde Schaumburg Dental developed a treatment plan to essentially save my teeth and it has worked perfectly. By following their guidance, I have not had a cavity, filling or needed any extensive dental work beyond what was required in the early stages of my treatment plan, implemented more than 20 years ago. I consider my relationship with Benjamin Turnwald Dentistry to be among the most important patient-doctor relationships I have. I don't trust my teeth to anyone else, period. After so many bad experiences with dentists as a child, it took a lot for me to trust a dental practice. Every visit resulted in me being soaked in sweat and needing to go home and decompress, shower and change clothes. When we moved to Atlanta and later Minneapolis, I would fly back to Chicago because of the loyalty and trust I have in Benjamin Turnwald Dentistry. Even now, I'm happy to make the one-hour drive each way regardless of traffic or weather. They were one of the reasons we wanted to move back to the Chicago area. Dr. Turnwald and his team are sensitive to each patient's unique needs. Their care and compassion for their patients is evident in every encounter. They are kind, gentle and sensitive professionals. They involve you in the decision-making and explain what they intend to do and why, presenting options and the pros and cons of each. In shopping around for another dentist, I realized that Dr. Turnwald was my previous dentist and this was previously Olde Schaumburg Dental. So this review is hard for me, but bear with me and I promise this is to be as honest as I can. Let me start by saying I REALLY liked coming here. When the practice was still under Dr. Stump, I had seen Dr. Turnwald several times and he was FANTASTIC. He is a courteous, considerate, and knowledgeable dentist that makes sure you're on the same page in terms of the situation in your mouth and the steps to treatment. The rest of the staff are fantastic as well: great listeners to your needs and comfort, helps breakdown costs of treatments, administratively well-organized, and helps with future concerns such as payment plans and appointments when necessary. The office is cozy and homey feeling, lots of personal touches like warm neck pillows and headphone music during uncomfortable procedures that require a lot of noise. Even with my initial hiccup when we first started seeing them 4 years ago about their office hours, I gave them a 2nd shot and did not regret it. Both doctors helped cure my headaches because of grinding I didn't even realize was an underlying issue. Overall, a well-rounded practice with professional, competent, and accommodating staff that you can trust. The reason my husband and I have to leave is simply the insurance factor and that they are still out-of-network, even with the change in ownership. That is the ONLY reason I am deducting a star. If ever they decide to participate in insurance coverage, we would be happy to return -- however, since we have to consider costs closely, we had to depart at this time. The staff there is amazing and very friendly. I've worked in guest service industry for years and one of the key things to remember about your customers is their name. The whole staff at Olde Schaumburg Dental remembered me each and every time I went there.
